Endpoint security is a set of controls that protects devices and the data on them—not one product with a fixed feature list. It can include antivirus, firewalls, application controls, encryption, vulnerability management, and endpoint detection and response (EDR). Antivirus focuses mainly on preventing and handling malware; EDR adds ongoing monitoring, investigation, and response capabilities.
What are the main types of endpoint security?
The term “endpoint” can refer to a laptop, desktop, server, thin client, virtual desktop, or mobile device. Endpoint security combines protections for these devices; which controls are included depends on the product, operating system, and management setup.
Antivirus and malware protection
Antivirus tools look for malicious software using known signatures and, in some products, behavior-based or machine-learning techniques. They may block, quarantine, or help remove harmful files. NIST includes both signature-based and non-signature-based malware protection among endpoint-security measures. NIST’s guidance on malware incident prevention and handling provides that broader context.

An endpoint protection platform is a broad product category that commonly combines malware prevention with other device protections. There is no single mandatory feature list that makes every product an EPP, so check the actual capabilities rather than assuming the label guarantees a specific set of tools.

Endpoint detection and response (EDR)
EDR monitors endpoint activity, collects events, supports alerting and investigation, and can perform configured response actions. CISA describes its EDR capability as providing “cybersecurity monitoring and control of endpoint devices,” including workstations, servers, laptops, thin clients, and virtual desktops. Where an organization uses them, EDR may integrate with security information and event management (SIEM) or security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) platforms. CISA’s CDM technical capabilities describes this capability and its integrations.
Host firewalls and network protection
A host firewall applies rules to network traffic entering or leaving an individual device. It can block traffic that is not explicitly allowed, limiting unwanted connections even when the device is connected to a broader network. Firewalls address network access; they do not replace malware scanning or endpoint monitoring.
Application control and attack-surface reduction
Application control can restrict which software is allowed to run. Attack-surface-reduction policies limit risky behaviors or common paths attackers may use, and controls can also cover removable storage. These measures reduce exposure; they are distinct from detecting and investigating activity after a threat is present.

Vulnerability management identifies software weaknesses and helps teams prioritize remediation. Configuration and compliance policies set device requirements and assess whether devices meet them. These controls help reduce exploitable gaps, but they do not themselves provide the same function as malware prevention or EDR monitoring.

Encryption and endpoint or mobile-device management
Disk encryption protects data stored on a device, especially if it is lost or stolen. Endpoint management applies settings and monitors devices across supported operating systems. Management tools can deploy or enforce controls such as encryption, firewall, antivirus, and EDR policies; support varies by platform.
How are antivirus, endpoint security, and EDR different?
Antivirus is one type of endpoint protection, usually centered on malware prevention and remediation. Endpoint security is the umbrella covering malware tools and other controls such as firewalls, encryption, application rules, and device management. EDR is distinguished by its monitoring, investigation, and response workflow. A basic prevention product does not automatically provide EDR’s visibility or operational response capabilities.
| Capability | Main purpose | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Antivirus or malware protection | Detect, block, quarantine, or remediate malicious files and behavior | Detection methods, remediation actions, and supported devices |
| EPP | Bundle endpoint-prevention and other device controls | Which modules are actually included; the label does not establish a universal feature set |
| EDR | Monitor endpoint events, support investigation, and enable configured response | Alert handling, response actions, supported endpoints, and integrations |
| Host firewall | Control network traffic to and from a device | Available rules and platform coverage |
| Application control and attack-surface reduction | Restrict software or risky behavior and reduce exposure | Policy options and supported operating systems |
| Vulnerability and configuration management | Find weaknesses, prioritize fixes, and assess device settings | Discovery, prioritization, remediation workflow, and compliance coverage |
| Encryption and device management | Protect stored data and apply device settings at scale | Encryption policy, enrollment requirements, and supported platforms |
Which endpoint controls should a small business consider?
Start with the devices you need to protect and the risks you need to address. A small business may need more than antivirus if it handles sensitive data, manages devices centrally, or needs to investigate suspicious activity. EDR is most useful when someone is responsible for reviewing alerts and taking action; buying monitoring without assigning that responsibility can leave alerts unattended.

- Consider application restrictions or attack-surface-reduction rules when limiting risky software and behavior is important.
- Add EDR when the business can investigate alerts and carry out response actions, either internally or through an explicitly assigned service.
There is no universal package that fits every business. A household user may primarily need built-in or subscription malware protection, while a business fleet may require centralized configuration, compliance checks, and a defined detection-and-response process.

How can you compare endpoint security options?
Compare the scope and operational requirements, not just product names. A control that is available for one operating system or subscription plan may not be available for another.
- Check device and OS coverage. Verify support for the exact platforms in your fleet, including the plan or edition required.
- List included prevention controls. Confirm whether malware protection, firewalls, application control, attack-surface reduction, and encryption are included or separately configured.
- Assess detection and response. Determine what events are monitored, how alerts are investigated, which response actions are available, and who will act on them.
- Review administration and integrations. Establish management requirements and whether any SIEM or SOAR integration fits systems and processes you actually operate.
- Check vulnerability and compliance workflows. Find out whether the option identifies weaknesses, helps prioritize fixes, and assesses required device configurations.
For example, Microsoft’s Intune documentation lists Windows policy types including antivirus, disk encryption, firewall, EDR, attack-surface reduction, App Control for Business, and account protection, while listing a narrower set for macOS. That illustrates why platform-specific verification matters; it is not a universal feature list for endpoint security. Microsoft’s endpoint security policy documentation describes the listed policy coverage.
Does endpoint security include a firewall and encryption?
It can, but the umbrella term does not guarantee that every product includes either control. A host firewall governs network traffic to and from a device; disk encryption protects data stored on it. Check that both controls are available for the device’s operating system and that the necessary policies are configured. Microsoft documents endpoint firewall and disk-encryption policy types in its Intune endpoint security guidance, with platform coverage varying by policy. Review the platform-specific policy list before relying on a particular control.
