TuxInDrive is an open-source client designed to manage multiple cloud and file-transfer services through one app on Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android. Its project documentation describes both conventional synchronization and files-on-demand streaming. The exact personal reasons its author built it are not established here: the DEV Community post carrying the title “Why I built TuxInDrive” is listed as published August 21, 2026, but its body was unavailable. The post listing identifies Tomas Pluharik as the author.
What TuxInDrive is intended to do
The project describes TuxInDrive as a native client for Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, pCloud, MEGA, Proton Drive, Nextcloud, S3-compatible storage, WebDAV, SFTP, and GitHub repositories. Its stated aim is to bring those services into a common application rather than require a separate sync client for each one. The project’s wording is: “TuxInDrive is a native Linux, Windows, macOS and Android client for Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, pCloud, MEGA, Proton Drive, Nextcloud, S3-compatible storage, WebDAV, SFTP, and GitHub repositories.” TuxInDrive’s GitHub repository
The documented implementation uses a shared GTK desktop interface on Linux, Windows, and macOS, and a native mobile layout on Android. Both are described as using rclone as the synchronization engine. TuxInDrive is MIT-licensed; rclone is a separate program with its own license. The repository’s capability descriptions are project statements, not independent test results.
Which platforms and features the project documents
The repository lists Ubuntu 24.04/26.04, Debian 12/13, Windows 10/11 x64, macOS 12 or later, and Android 8 or later as targets. It displays client release 0.26.67, but requirements, release numbers, and package availability can change; consult the repository and its current installation guidance for the latest details.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Synchronization and recovery
- Two-way synchronization: Changes can move in both directions, with conflict copies retained for review.
- One-way mirror modes: Download-only and upload-only modes are described for keeping one side mirrored from the other.
- Selective and background syncing: The project lists folder selection, background operation, and incremental synchronization.
- History and recovery: Local version history and recycle recovery are documented, along with mass-change protection, deletion limits, non-destructive previews for established jobs, and pauses when suspicious mass changes are detected.
- Search: Optional local filename and path search is described separately from a default-off local content index.
Files-on-demand streaming
TuxInDrive also describes streaming drives that expose a cloud file tree locally and fetch file content in chunks when needed. This is files-on-demand access, not media streaming. The project says Windows streaming requires WinFsp and macOS streaming requires macFUSE; check the current installation instructions for applicable requirements.
What the author’s stated motivation is—and is not
The available post listing provides the title, author, date, and tags, but not the article text. It therefore does not establish the author’s personal origin story, the specific problem that prompted the project, or the design trade-offs behind it. The product’s documented scope supports describing what TuxInDrive is meant to do, but not attributing an unverified motivation to its author.
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
The project is explicitly open-source and covers a broad mix of cloud storage, file-transfer protocols, and repository access. That makes a shared client a clear part of its stated purpose; it does not, by itself, show that the client is more reliable, easier to use, or better suited to a particular person than other tools.

Understand the data risks before connecting an account
Synchronization can propagate edits and, depending on the selected mode and configuration, deletions. A mirror is not automatically a backup: if a change or deletion is synchronized, it can affect the other side too. TuxInDrive’s documented safeguards can help manage some scenarios, but they are not a guarantee against data loss.
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Keep a separate backup of important files before introducing any synchronization tool.
- Choose the intended mode—two-way, download-only, or upload-only—and confirm which location is authoritative.
- Review the job’s preview and deletion settings before allowing changes to run; inspect conflicts instead of assuming one copy should win.
- Use version history or recycle recovery as recovery features, not as a substitute for an independent backup.
Credentials, installation, and setup considerations
The project says OAuth tokens and credential-provider secrets are stored in rclone’s encrypted configuration, while the configuration password is kept in GNOME Secret Service. It also says logs do not contain a configuration dump. These are specific project descriptions, not a blanket security guarantee; consult the project’s security policy and operational documentation to assess its trust boundaries and limitations.
The repository lists Debian packages, Windows and macOS installers, an Android APK, and an Ubuntu PPA. Because download links, package names, and platform support may change, use the project’s current installation instructions rather than relying on an old filename or release listing.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
For Google Drive, the project notes that a dedicated Desktop OAuth application is required because rclone’s shared Google client is being retired during 2026. Organizational deployments and some other OAuth providers may also require users to configure their own applications. Check current TuxInDrive documentation and provider policies when setting up an account.
How to assess whether it fits your setup
Before choosing a multi-cloud sync client, check the details that affect your own workflow rather than relying on the number of integrations alone:
Best Value
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- Whether your provider and operating system are supported in the current release.
- Whether you need two-way sync, a one-way mirror, or cloud files that download only when opened.
- How conflicts, deletions, mass changes, version history, and recovery are handled.
- Where credentials and configuration are stored, and what the documentation says about logs and security limitations.
- How the app is installed and updated on each device you plan to use.
Those checks are particularly important when the same files are accessed from several devices or when a cloud account contains the only copy of important data.
