Short answer: A rarity symbol tells you how a publisher classifies a card within a particular game, set, and product era. It may describe a category, a foil or alternate-art treatment, or both. It does not, by itself, tell you the probability of pulling that exact card. To answer a pull-rate question, you must identify the publisher, set, product, pack configuration, publication date, and the number and distribution of cards eligible for the relevant slot.

What a rarity label actually tells you

Trading-card publishers use rarity names and symbols as part of their own cataloging and production systems. “Common,” “rare,” “ultra rare,” “mythic rare,” and similar terms are labels inside those systems, not grades on a single industry-wide scale. The same word can describe a different production category in another game, set, or era.

A label can classify the card itself, identify a visual treatment such as foil or alternate art, or do both at once. It can also tell you which cards are eligible for a particular pack slot. What it does not automatically provide is a card-level probability. A publisher can guarantee that a pack contains a card from a category while leaving the chance of any named card dependent on the set’s collation and the number of cards in that category.

Rarity is local to a publisher and era

Always read a symbol in context. A circle, diamond, or star may have one meaning in a current set and a different meaning in an older release. Even within one game, a publisher can add new categories, change artwork treatments, or alter the slots in a pack. Treat the game, set, product type, and release period as part of the definition.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet symbols

For the Pokémon TCG Scarlet & Violet series, The Pokémon Company describes the familiar base symbols and several newer categories in its March 30, 2023 explanation. The symbols and names below belong to that series’ design system; they are not a universal key for every Pokémon card ever printed.

Scarlet & Violet marking What the publisher’s description identifies
Common A circle symbol
Uncommon A diamond symbol
Rare A star symbol
Double rare Two solid black stars
Ultra rare Two shiny foil stars
Illustration rare One shiny gold star
Special illustration rare A category for certain alternate-art Pokémon ex or Supporter cards

These marks help you identify the card’s printed category or treatment. They do not say that a card with two stars is, for example, exactly twice as difficult to find as a card with one star. The symbols are not a published odds table.

Why a rarity mark does not equal the chance of pulling a card

There are two different questions collectors often combine:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What kind of card can appear in this slot? This is a pack-configuration or category question.
  • What is the chance that the card is this specific name and number? This is a card-level distribution question.

A pack may guarantee a category, such as “at least one foil rare or higher,” without guaranteeing any particular card in that category. If ten or more cards are eligible for the slot, the publisher’s collation method determines how those cards are selected. The category statement alone does not reveal whether eligible cards are equally represented, whether some occupy multiple print sheets, or whether additional rules apply.

A useful way to think about the problem is to separate the stages: first determine the chance that a pack supplies the relevant slot or category; then determine how that slot is distributed among the eligible cards. The second stage cannot be inferred from the label. If a source does not publish the set’s collation or a card-level rate, an exact probability is not established.

Guaranteed category versus named card

“Rare or higher guaranteed” means the pack contains at least one card meeting that minimum category in the described configuration. It does not mean that every rare card has the same chance, that a particular rare is guaranteed within a certain number of packs, or that a higher label has a fixed multiplier.

Likewise, “foil,” “alternate art,” or “special treatment” can describe how a card is printed rather than a single rarity tier. One publisher may use foil as a treatment applied across several categories; another may reserve it for a specific slot. Do not convert a visual treatment into a universal rarity scale.

What the Pokémon pack statement does—and does not—tell you

Pokémon Support’s product-information page, updated January 30, 2026, gives a concrete example of the difference between composition and odds. It states: “Booster packs are packed randomly.” The described booster packs contain:

  • 10 game cards: 4 commons, 3 uncommons, and 3 foils
  • At least one foil rare or higher
  • One Energy card
  • One code card

This is a configuration statement for the packs covered by that Support page. It tells you how many cards of each broad type are in a pack and the minimum foil-rarity condition. It does not publish the chance of pulling a named Pokémon, a particular illustration rare, or a particular special illustration rare. Those chances would require the set’s complete distribution and collation information.

The wording also has a defined scope. The page describes the product configuration available when it was updated; it should not be silently applied to every historical Pokémon product, every region, or every special pack format. If you are checking an older expansion, a promotional product, or a nonstandard bundle, find the product statement for that item.

Why an Elite Trainer Box does not change the pack odds

Pokémon Support explicitly says that the booster packs in Elite Trainer Boxes are the same packs that can be purchased individually and “do not contain a special rate of cards or a higher chance of obtaining specific cards.” In practical terms, buying a box changes the number of packs and adds accessories; it is not evidence that a particular card has better odds in those packs.

An Elite Trainer Box can include useful collecting accessories such as sleeves. Sleeves protect cards after you open them, but they do not reveal a card’s rarity and cannot increase a pull rate. Check the product’s stated card count and sleeve dimensions when compatibility matters.

How other publishers describe distribution

Magic: The Gathering provides clear examples of why distribution figures must be tied to a product and date. Wizards of the Coast has published historical explanations for foil frequency and Set Booster slots, but those figures are not current universal odds and are not probabilities for a particular named card.

Published figure Scope and qualification
1 foil in 67 cards, changing to 1 in 45 cards Wizards’ Project Booster Fun article from July 20, 2019; the change began with Core Set 2020. It is a historical foil-frequency statement, not a rate for every Magic product or a named card.
One mythic rare in every 7.4 rares Wizards’ Set Boosters article from July 25, 2020; applies to the rare/mythic rare slot beginning with Zendikar Rising as described there. It is not the chance of a particular mythic.
Wildcard slot produced at least one extra rare or mythic rare 23.4% of the time The same 2020 Set Boosters article’s figure for the product and era described. It should not be generalized to all booster packs.

Wizards also cautions that “Which cards get the treatment (and usually, it will just be cards from that set), and at what rarity, will vary from set to set.” That is why a distribution number must travel with its product name, slot, set, and date. A historical statement can be accurate and still be the wrong answer for a current pack.

How to answer “What are my odds of pulling this card?”

Use this checklist before accepting a pull-rate claim from a chart, video, or forum post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact game and set. Record the publisher, expansion name, card number, and language or regional edition if those differ.
  2. Identify the product. A standard booster, a draft-style pack, a Set Booster, a special collection, and a box insert can use different slots.
  3. Read the current product statement. Look for the pack’s card count, guaranteed categories, and any date or regional limitation. A composition statement is not automatically a card-level probability.
  4. Separate the slot from the card. Ask whether the source gives the chance of getting the relevant slot, the chance of the category, or the chance of the exact card. Those are different measurements.
  5. Check the eligible-card pool. The exact rate depends on which cards can occupy that slot and how the publisher collates them. A rarity name does not reveal that pool.
  6. Check the date. Product formulas change. A figure from an earlier set or a previous booster type may no longer apply.
  7. Label estimates honestly. If the publisher has not released a card-level rate, call any community calculation an estimate and do not present it as an official probability.

For a reliable answer, you should be able to write one sentence that includes the game, set, product, slot, source date, and whether the number refers to a category or a named card. If one of those pieces is missing, the result is likely broader than the question you are trying to answer.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming every publisher uses the same rarity ladder

Mistake: Treating “ultra rare” or a star symbol as a fixed position on a cross-game scale.

Correction: Use the publisher’s glossary or set announcement for the exact era. Compare systems by what the label classifies, where it applies, and what slot rules accompany it—not by arranging names into one universal ladder.

Turning a minimum guarantee into a card rate

Mistake: Reading “at least one foil rare or higher” as a probability for a specific foil or rare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Treat the phrase as a minimum category requirement. Find separate distribution information before stating a named-card rate.

Assuming a premium box has premium odds

Mistake: Believing an Elite Trainer Box or another bundle contains specially seeded booster packs.

Correction: Check the publisher’s product statement. For the Pokémon packs covered by its January 30, 2026 Support page, the packs are the same individually sold packs and have no higher chance for specific cards.

Using old or unrelated statistics

Mistake: Applying a historical Magic foil frequency to a current set, or using a Set Booster statistic for a different booster type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Carry the product, set, slot, and publication date with every number. If the source says the figure starts with a particular release, do not extend it beyond that scope.

Equating rarity with price or play value

Mistake: Assuming a higher rarity always means a higher market price, stronger gameplay, or greater collector demand.

Correction: Treat rarity as a production and classification signal. Price and demand require separate, current market evidence and can vary by artwork, condition, tournament relevance, language, and supply.

What rarity can help you do as a collector

Rarity marks are still useful. They help you sort a binder, verify that a checklist entry matches the printed card, identify which cards use an alternate treatment, and understand the categories a set was designed to contain. They are especially valuable when combined with the card number, set symbol, and an official checklist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They can also tell you what to look for when opening packs: if a product promises a foil or higher slot, you can inspect that slot for the relevant treatments. But the mark is an identification aid, not a promise that a named card will appear within a fixed number of packs. Random packing means that short runs can contain duplicates or no copy of the card you want.

How to communicate odds without overstating certainty

Use precise wording. “This pack includes at least one foil rare or higher” reports a product guarantee. “The publisher reported one mythic rare per 7.4 rares in this Set Booster explanation” reports a dated, slot-level distribution. “This card is one of the rarest in the set” is only justified if the source defines that comparison. “You have a 1-in-X chance of pulling this exact card” requires a source that actually establishes that card-level figure.

When no official card-level number exists, the accurate answer is not to manufacture one from the rarity symbol. State what is known—the category, the pack configuration, and the publisher’s randomness or distribution statement—and identify the missing information. That is more useful than a precise-looking percentage that cannot be reproduced from the product’s published rules.
