Tor gives a BTCPay Server installation a way to publish selected services as onion services and to reach supported Bitcoin connectivity through Tor. In the standard BTCPay Docker deployment, Tor is activated by default and the server’s onion hostname is shown in Server Settings. That can simplify a home or office installation by avoiding some firewall, NAT, DNS-certificate and fixed-IP work. It does not make the operator anonymous, prevent all clearnet connections, or guarantee that plugins never send data outside Tor.
What Tor does inside BTCPay Server
BTCPay Server uses Tor for two related purposes: publishing selected BTCPay services through onion addresses and providing Tor connectivity for parts of the Bitcoin stack. The official standard Docker deployment documentation lists Tor hidden services and selected Tor connectivity among the services included in the standard Bitcoin setup. Its deployment FAQ says Tor is activated by default on Docker deployments; that default describes the documented Docker arrangement, not every possible BTCPay installation.
An onion service is reached through the Tor network rather than by resolving a conventional public DNS name. For an operator, that can remove several jobs that are otherwise common when hosting from a home or office connection. BTCPay’s deployment FAQ specifically identifies these documented benefits:
- Less dependence on opening inbound firewall ports.
- Less need to configure NAT or router redirection.
- No requirement to obtain DNS for an HTTPS certificate for the onion address.
- Less dependence on a fixed public Lightning IP for the documented use case.
Those are deployment conveniences, not a promise that Tor automatically solves every networking problem. You still need to operate BTCPay, secure its accounts, maintain its Bitcoin and Lightning services, and decide which interfaces should be reachable.

Why activate Tor? Does it mean that nobody knows who I am?
No. Onion access changes the network path used to reach a service; it is not a complete anonymity system for the operator or the business using BTCPay.
BTCPay’s documentation states: “But if you’re looking for perfect privacy and security, activating Tor with your BTCPay just won’t do it.” The same FAQ explains that enabling Tor does not make the operator anonymous. It also warns that BTCPay is an evolving service with plugins and that it cannot guarantee every component will avoid sending data over a clear network. A plugin, an external integration, an administrator’s browser, a payment processor, or another service can create a connection that is not carried through Tor.
Tor also does not prove that nobody can connect over clearnet. Depending on the deployment and configuration, BTCPay may still have ordinary network endpoints, administration paths, APIs, webhooks, or integrations. Treat the onion hostname as one access route, not as evidence that all other routes have disappeared.

Use Tor when its routing and reachability characteristics fit your deployment. Do not describe a BTCPay onion address as proof of legal anonymity, total privacy, or immunity from traffic analysis, account compromise, plugin behavior, or application-level data disclosure.

Standard Docker Tor versus a manually configured reverse proxy
BTCPay documents more than one way to combine the server with Tor. The two patterns have different infrastructure requirements and exposure goals.
| Aspect | Standard Docker deployment | Reverse-proxy-to-Tor setup |
|---|---|---|
| Tor services | Tor services are included in the documented Bitcoin deployment and activated by default on Docker deployments. | Tor is configured as part of an advanced, manually managed proxy arrangement. |
| Typical goal | Provide private onion reachability for the BTCPay instance and selected Bitcoin connectivity. | Proxy selected BTCPay payment-gateway or API traffic between a Tor hidden service and a clearnet-facing setup. |
| Infrastructure named by BTCPay | The Docker deployment’s bundled services; the documentation does not require a VPS or domain for onion access in this pattern. | The reverse-proxy guide lists a VPS, root access and a domain as requirements for that guide. |
| Administration | Use the Docker deployment’s generated Tor service data and BTCPay Server Settings. | Configure and maintain the proxy, the Tor service and the selected upstream traffic yourself. |
| Who should choose it | Operators who want the standard, bundled BTCPay deployment and an onion endpoint without designing a separate proxy. | Operators who specifically need controlled proxying and are comfortable administering a VPS, root-level services and DNS. |
A VPS and domain are requirements for the reverse-proxy method described in that guide, not a universal requirement for BTCPay onion access. Do not deploy the advanced pattern merely because you want to open the standard Docker onion address.
How to find your BTCPay onion address
The exact method depends on how BTCPay was deployed. Start in the application, then use the Docker-volume path only when it matches the documented standard Docker layout.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use BTCPay Server Settings
- Sign in to the BTCPay Server administration interface.
- Open Server Settings.
- Open the area that lists service endpoints. In the reverse-proxy documentation this is Server Settings > Services.
- Copy the Tor
.onionaddress exactly. Onion hostnames are long and character-sensitive, so avoid retyping them.
The settings page is the most portable option because filesystem locations vary between deployment methods. If your interface uses a different layout, look for the Services or Tor endpoint shown by the server rather than assuming a Docker path.

Read the generated Docker service file
For the documented Docker arrangement, the deployment FAQ gives this command:
cat /var/lib/docker/volumes/generated_tor_servicesdir/_data/BTCPayServer/hostname
Run it on the host that owns the BTCPay Docker volume. It prints the generated BTCPay onion hostname. The path is specific to that documented volume name and layout; a custom compose project, a changed Docker volume, a non-Docker installation or a later deployment change may store the file elsewhere. If the command reports that the file or volume does not exist, return to Server Settings and verify which deployment pattern you are running instead of creating a guessed path.
How to access BTCPay over Tor without first using clearnet
You need a Tor-capable browser or another application configured to use the Tor network. A normal browser connected directly to the public internet generally cannot resolve an onion hostname.
- Obtain the onion hostname from Server Settings or, for the documented Docker layout, from the generated-volume command.
- Open a Tor-capable browser or a properly configured Tor client.
- Enter the complete
.onionaddress exactly as displayed. Do not add a guessed domain suffix or omit characters. - Confirm that the page is the expected BTCPay login and that the hostname matches the value shown by your server. An onion address alone is not proof that the endpoint belongs to your intended operator if you copied it from an untrusted source.
- Use your normal BTCPay account controls, strong authentication and least-privilege practices. Tor changes transport; it does not replace application security.
“Without clearnet” means that you reach the service through its onion route rather than opening the public clearnet URL first. It does not mean that every operation performed by BTCPay, its plugins or connected services will remain on Tor.

Configuration options and version differences
BTCPay’s configuration reference describes command-line options related to Tor. The reference is generated from options registered by the standard Bitcoin build and warns that settings and defaults can change. Check the reference corresponding to the version you actually deployed before adding or changing an option.
| Option | Documented purpose | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|
torrcfile |
Path to a torrc file containing hidden-service directories. |
The file path and its permissions must match the host and service layout used by your deployment. |
torservices |
Tor hostnames added to Server Settings and to the BTCPay onion header. | Changing this affects which hostnames BTCPay advertises or associates with its service information. |
socksendpoint |
A SOCKS endpoint used to connect to onion URLs. | The endpoint must be reachable from the component that is making the Tor connection. |
Do not copy an option from an older guide without checking its current spelling, default and scope. A configuration that works for the standard Bitcoin build may not map directly to a custom reverse proxy, a different container layout or another application version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect the Bitcoin peer-to-peer onion endpoint
BTCPay distinguishes the web interface and payment APIs from Bitcoin peer-to-peer connectivity. The deployment FAQ says the Bitcoin P2P port is not exposed externally by default and that a P2P connection is available over Tor. That default is safer than publishing the port indiscriminately, but it does not make the P2P onion address harmless to share.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
BTCPay warns against giving the Bitcoin P2P onion service to untrusted parties. Malicious peers could use the endpoint to attack or DDoS the node. Keep the P2P onion address for parties and systems that genuinely need it, and treat it as a sensitive operational detail.

The same guidance cautions that unsafe clearnet exposure of port 8333 should be limited to a trusted LAN or protected with firewall rules that whitelist specific hosts. Do not expose 8333 broadly just because an application is also reachable through Tor. Review the host firewall, router rules and container port mappings together.
Troubleshooting onion access
The onion address is missing from Server Settings
- Confirm that you are looking at the server’s administrative settings, not a personal profile page.
- Check whether the installation is the standard Docker deployment described by BTCPay. Tor defaults and generated services differ in custom deployments.
- Review the deployment logs and configuration for a disabled or failed Tor service before changing application options.
- Compare any option you add with the configuration reference for the installed version.
The Docker command returns “file not found”
The command depends on the volume name generated_tor_servicesdir and the documented path. A custom volume name, a different compose directory, a restored backup or a non-Docker installation can make that path invalid. Use Server Settings first, then inspect the actual deployment’s volumes and service configuration rather than editing a guessed location.
The hostname does not load in a regular browser
Use a Tor-capable browser or a client configured with a Tor SOCKS endpoint. Check that the device can reach Tor and that the hostname was copied exactly. If the address works in a Tor-capable client but not in a direct browser, the difference is the network path, not necessarily BTCPay.
The onion page loads but an integration fails
BTCPay’s warning about plugins and clear-network leaks is relevant here. A plugin, webhook destination or external API may require its own network route and may not inherit the browser’s Tor path. Identify the failing integration, inspect its endpoint and logs, and do not assume that opening the BTCPay dashboard over onion access tunnels every backend request through Tor.
Choosing the right approach
Use the standard Docker pattern when you want the documented bundled Tor services and a straightforward onion endpoint for a BTCPay server. It is especially relevant to a home or office operator trying to reduce router and DNS work.
Consider the reverse-proxy pattern only when you have a specific need to control how selected BTCPay payment-gateway or API traffic is proxied and you are prepared to operate the additional VPS, root-access and domain infrastructure named in the guide. It is an advanced topology, not a prerequisite for ordinary onion access.
- Choose standard Docker when bundled services and private onion reachability are the goal.
- Choose a reverse proxy when selective proxying and a separately managed public infrastructure layer are required.
- Keep P2P sharing restricted regardless of which web-access pattern you use.
- Validate every plugin and integration instead of treating Tor activation as a whole-system privacy guarantee.
What onion access does—and does not—prove
- It proves that the BTCPay service has an onion hostname published through the configured Tor service.
- It can provide an alternative route that avoids some public DNS, NAT and inbound-port tasks in the documented Docker use case.
- It does not prove that the operator is anonymous.
- It does not prove that clearnet endpoints are disabled.
- It does not guarantee that plugins, APIs, webhooks or other connected services avoid clear-network traffic.
- It does not make unrestricted sharing of the Bitcoin P2P onion endpoint safe.
For deployment-specific behavior, consult the BTCPay deployment FAQ, the configuration reference, the Docker deployment README, and the reverse-proxy guide that matches your topology and installed version.
