It is intended to help with speaking and writing practice, academic vocabulary, and listening note-taking. Its author’s description does not independently verify privacy, performance, or full offline behavior, and the project’s older task templates should be checked against the TOEFL iBT format ETS introduced on January 21, 2026.
What TOEFLGemma AI is
In a DEV Community article, author DinitaKs describes TOEFLGemma AI as a study tool built for a colleague who wanted to practice academic English without an ongoing internet connection or subscription. The described setup runs Gemma 2 2B through Ollama and uses a custom Modelfile and system prompt to guide the assistant’s responses. The article suggests using a local chat interface such as AnythingLLM or Page Assist.
That is a project description, not a guarantee that every component remains compatible with current software versions or that every part of a user’s setup operates offline. The article does not report independent performance testing or a privacy audit. Read the project article for its author’s setup and stated goals.
What the assistant is designed to help with
- Speaking and writing frameworks: The project describes structured approaches for Speaking Tasks 1–4 and writing tasks, including Writing for an Academic Discussion.
- Academic vocabulary: It is intended to explain academic words in simpler language and provide examples.
- Listening notes: It offers strategies for taking notes while listening to passages.
These are described functions, not evidence of measured score improvement, reliable feedback, or coverage of every exam task. Treat the assistant as a practice aid rather than an authority on scoring or current test requirements.

Does its task coverage match the 2026 TOEFL iBT?
Not as established by the project description. ETS says the TOEFL iBT format changed effective January 21, 2026. The current test has Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking sections, with task types that include Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Read an Academic Passage, Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, Listen to an Academic Talk, Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion, Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview. ETS also describes an adaptive test experience and a 1–6 score scale.
Because TOEFLGemma’s article describes Speaking Tasks 1–4 and older writing frameworks, do not assume its templates map to the current test. Compare each practice prompt with ETS’s official TOEFL iBT test content and structure. In particular, confirm that a writing exercise reflects the current email and academic discussion tasks, and that speaking practice addresses Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview rather than relying only on the older task numbering.

What “offline” and privacy mean here
The creator presents the tool as offline and privacy-focused because it is built around a model run locally through Ollama. The cited article does not independently test whether the complete installation works without an internet connection, inspect network traffic, or audit how a selected interface handles data. Local model use is the project’s stated design, not proof that every surrounding component has no network activity or data handling.
If offline operation matters, check the software documentation for the specific versions and interfaces you install, and verify behavior on your own device. Avoid entering personal or sensitive information unless you understand how your chosen setup processes and stores it.

What you need to know before trying it
The project article gives a basic setup outline: install Ollama, run ollama run gemma2:2b, configure the described Modelfile and system prompt, then connect through a local chat interface such as AnythingLLM or Page Assist. These are the author’s reported instructions, not a current compatibility guarantee; consult the software’s current documentation for installation and configuration details.
The cited material does not establish a required laptop specification, microphone, headset, book, or other physical purchase. It also provides no project-specific benchmark, performance statistic, or user-study result. Whether the model runs acceptably on a particular device therefore cannot be concluded from the article alone.

Who it may suit—and how to use it responsibly
TOEFLGemma may be worth exploring if you want to experiment with a local AI assistant for academic English practice and are comfortable checking the setup yourself. Its described vocabulary explanations and practice frameworks can support study, but they do not establish that it reproduces ETS tasks accurately or substitutes for official test guidance.
