Wear comfortable clothes you can adjust in layers, bring a packable waterproof poncho or jacket, and choose shoes for the forecast, ground and amount of walking. Check the local forecast and the festival’s current rules before you leave: no single outfit suits every fall festival or weather swing.
Check the forecast and venue rules before choosing an outfit
Look at the expected temperatures, rain, wind and sunny periods close to the event. Fall weather can shift during the day, so York Region’s outdoor fall play guidance recommends checking the weather in the morning and dressing in layers that can be added or removed. The guidance is general fall advice, not festival-specific.
Also check the festival’s current clothing and bag rules. Policies differ by venue; don’t assume a bag, umbrella or other item is allowed. A compact rain layer is a practical option when you need weather protection but have limited space.

Start with comfortable base clothing
Choose clothes that let you walk, stand and sit comfortably for several hours. Wear a comfortable base outfit, then add a removable layer for cooler temperatures or the evening. The Met Office recommends taking an extra layer because it can cool quickly at night.

Use layers rather than one heavy garment
For cold conditions, the U.S. National Weather Service recommends several loose-fitting, lightweight layers rather than one heavy layer. Its cold-weather guidance also advises removing layers before you sweat and become chilled. That advice is about cold-weather safety, but the principle is useful when a festival day moves between activity, shade and cooler evening conditions.
Pack rain protection and keep a spare layer dry
Bring a packable waterproof poncho or jacket as a contingency for showers. The Met Office’s festival weather advice recommends a waterproof poncho and a waterproof bag for clothes. Store a spare layer in a bag that will keep it dry if rain arrives; check the garment’s specifications rather than assuming an item is waterproof.

Met Office meteorologist and festivalgoer Clare Nasir wrote, “The art of staying dry? Timing is everything – the Met Office App has a nifty option to view imminent rain and showers.” Checking for imminent showers can help you decide when to put on your rain layer, but carry it if the forecast suggests rain could affect the event.
Choose shoes for the surface and the walking
Match footwear to the expected rain and ground. Wellies can suit wet, muddy conditions—the Met Office lists them as one possible wet-weather choice—but they are not the answer for every venue. For a long day on your feet, comfort matters alongside weather protection. Consider the surface, how much walking you expect and whether your shoes will remain comfortable if conditions change.

Prepare for warm and sunny spells
Changing weather can include sunshine as well as cool air or rain. When it is sunny or hot, bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and water, and look for shade. UK government mass-gathering guidance recommends suitable covering clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, shade and sunscreen. It advises limiting sun exposure from 11am to 3pm, when UV levels are highest.

Match the outfit to the conditions
