Turn on Airplane Mode, then turn Wi‑Fi back on and join the airline’s network. This disables cellular transmission while preserving the Wi‑Fi connection the aircraft requires. It is the correct onboard setup—not a guarantee that the shared aircraft connection will become faster.
The setting that matters most: Airplane Mode, followed by Wi‑Fi
Airplane Mode is the one setting every passenger should start with. On an iPhone, it initially turns off the cellular radio, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth. If the airline permits onboard Wi‑Fi, you can switch Wi‑Fi back on while Airplane Mode remains active. Apple describes this behavior in its travel guidance, and both Delta Air Lines and Air India tell passengers to use the same sequence.
The goal is to stop the phone from trying to use ordinary cellular service while the aircraft is in flight. You still need Wi‑Fi enabled because that is how the phone reaches the aircraft’s onboard network. Turning off Wi‑Fi would prevent the connection rather than improve it.
iPhone sequence
- Open Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner on an iPhone with Face ID, or up from the bottom on older models.
- Tap the Airplane Mode button. Confirm that the airplane icon appears and cellular service is disabled.
- Tap the Wi‑Fi button to turn Wi‑Fi back on. Airplane Mode should remain enabled.
- Select the airline’s Wi‑Fi network in Settings > Wi‑Fi or from Control Center.
- Wait for the airline login page, then complete the free-access, pass-purchase or account-login flow.
Apple’s wording is conditional: Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth can be used in Airplane Mode if the airline allows them. Follow the crew’s instructions and the operating airline’s rules if they differ.

Android sequence
Android phones use the same principle, although button names and menus vary by manufacturer. Open Quick Settings, enable Airplane mode, re-enable Wi‑Fi, choose the aircraft network and finish the captive-portal login. If Wi‑Fi does not return automatically, open Settings > Network & internet (or the manufacturer’s equivalent) and switch it on manually.
What to turn off—and what not to turn off
| Setting | Recommended action | Why | What it will not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cellular service | Disable through Airplane Mode | Matches airline and Apple guidance for onboard use and stops ordinary cellular transmission. | It does not increase the aircraft’s satellite capacity. |
| Wi‑Fi | Turn back on after enabling Airplane Mode | Required to join the aircraft network and open its login page. | Leaving it off guarantees that onboard Wi‑Fi cannot work. |
| Bluetooth | Leave according to your airline and crew instructions | Airplane Mode initially disables it, but Apple allows it to be re-enabled when permitted; it is useful for headphones and accessories. | Turning Bluetooth off is not established as a way to make shared Wi‑Fi faster. |
| Private Relay | Change only for a documented Delta Sync access problem | Delta says its IP-address masking can block some exclusive offers or content. | Disabling it is not a general bandwidth boost. |
| VPN | On Delta, authenticate or buy a pass first; enable the VPN afterward | Delta says a connected VPN can prevent access to Delta Sync login. | A VPN change does not create more aircraft bandwidth. |
| Background apps, notifications and cellular data toggles | No blanket change is required by the airline guidance | They may affect your own data use or battery, but they are not identified as fixes for an aircraft connection. | Turning them off cannot overcome a busy satellite link. |
When Private Relay is worth changing
Private Relay is a targeted troubleshooting step for Apple devices using Delta Sync, not a universal in-flight Wi‑Fi optimization. Delta explains that Private Relay masks the device’s IP address and can prevent access to some exclusive offers or content.
If you are connected to Delta’s onboard Wi‑Fi but Delta Sync offers or content will not load, temporarily turn off Private Relay, retry the page, and restore the feature after you finish if you want its privacy protection back. On current iPhone software, the control is generally under Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay; Apple may label the switch slightly differently by software release or account configuration.

Do not present this as a speed setting. Delta’s guidance supports it for access to particular Delta Sync content. It does not say that disabling Private Relay increases the Wi‑Fi link’s throughput.
VPN order matters on Delta
Delta says its onboard Wi‑Fi supports major VPN applications, but a VPN connection can block the Delta Sync login screen. The reliable order is:
- Enable Airplane Mode and re-enable Wi‑Fi.
- Connect to the aircraft network.
- Open the Delta Sync login page.
- Sign in or purchase the Wi‑Fi pass.
- Only after authentication succeeds, connect your VPN.
If you enabled the VPN first and the login page disappeared, disconnect the VPN temporarily, reopen the browser or airline portal, and complete authentication. Reconnect the VPN after access is established. This sequence concerns the captive portal; it is not a promise that a VPN will be faster or slower once you are online.

Why correct settings cannot always make Wi‑Fi faster
Phone settings determine whether the device can associate with the aircraft network and complete authentication. They cannot enlarge the connection shared by the aircraft and its passengers.
Air India says available bandwidth depends on the satellite link, how many aircraft are connected to that satellite, how many passengers are using the service and how intensively they are transferring data. Japan Airlines similarly notes that satellite-based inflight Wi‑Fi may feel slower than a typical ground connection. During busy periods, a correctly configured phone can therefore remain slow.
Signs the limitation is aircraft-side
- The airline portal opens and confirms that you are connected, but ordinary pages load slowly.
- Performance changes as more passengers begin using the service.
- Text pages work while large downloads, video or other high-volume activity stalls.
- The crew or airline app reports a satellite, service-area or temporary capacity issue.
In those situations, repeatedly toggling Bluetooth, Private Relay or background settings will not add capacity. Reduce high-volume use, wait a few minutes, or continue offline until the service improves.

A practical connection checklist
- Check the airline’s rules. Wi‑Fi availability, supported features and permitted radios vary by airline, route and aircraft. Follow crew announcements before changing settings.
- Enable Airplane Mode. Verify that the cellular indicator disappears or that the airplane icon is shown.
- Restore Wi‑Fi only. Choose the onboard network; do not leave Airplane Mode disabled merely to get Wi‑Fi.
- Open the portal. If it does not appear automatically, open a browser and visit a plain, non-secure webpage to trigger the captive-portal redirect.
- Authenticate before using a VPN. This is especially important on Delta, where the VPN can prevent Delta Sync login.
- Apply airline-specific privacy fixes only when indicated. For a Delta Sync offers/content problem on an Apple device, test with Private Relay temporarily off.
- Test with a lightweight page. A text-heavy page is a better first check than video or a large download.
- Respect call restrictions. Do not start a voice or video call unless the airline explicitly permits it.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Wi‑Fi network is missing
Confirm that Airplane Mode is on and Wi‑Fi has been re-enabled. Move to the airline’s published operating window if one applies, and check whether the crew has announced that service is unavailable. Some aircraft or routes may not offer Wi‑Fi at all.
The network appears, but the login page does not
- Disconnect and reconnect to the onboard network.
- Open the browser manually and load a simple webpage to prompt the portal.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN, then authenticate.
- On Delta, check Private Relay only if Delta Sync offers or content are the specific items failing.
- If the portal still will not load, forget the network and rejoin it, subject to the airline’s instructions.
You are connected but pages remain slow
First distinguish authentication from capacity. A successful portal login means the phone is configured correctly; it does not mean the satellite link has spare bandwidth. Limit large transfers and retry later. Air India identifies passenger numbers, aircraft demand and satellite conditions as determinants of available bandwidth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWi‑Fi disconnects repeatedly
Keep the phone in Airplane Mode with Wi‑Fi enabled, remain within the airline’s service area and avoid switching repeatedly between cellular and Wi‑Fi. If the airline’s own troubleshooting page or crew gives a reset procedure, follow that procedure. A disconnect can also reflect changing aircraft coverage or an overloaded service rather than a phone setting.

Airline policies are not interchangeable
Availability and restrictions differ, so one carrier’s instructions should not be generalized to every flight.
| Airline example | Relevant policy or guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Delta Air Lines | Use Airplane Mode with Wi‑Fi enabled; authenticate or purchase a pass before turning on a VPN. Private Relay may interfere with some Delta Sync offers or content. Voice and video calls are not permitted. | Complete Delta Sync access first, then enable a VPN. Treat Private Relay as a content-access troubleshooting step. |
| Air India | Use Airplane Mode with Wi‑Fi enabled. Bandwidth varies with satellite conditions, connected aircraft, passenger count and data demand. | Do not interpret slow performance as proof that another phone toggle is wrong. |
| Singapore Airlines | Wi‑Fi service is available during a defined part of the flight, above 10,000 feet—approximately 15 minutes after take-off until 15 minutes before arrival. Voice calls, including internet-protocol calls such as WhatsApp or Messenger calls, are not supported. | Wait for the permitted operating window and use messaging or browsing instead of calls. |
| Japan Airlines | Satellite-based inflight Wi‑Fi may feel slower than Wi‑Fi on the ground. | Set expectations around latency and capacity before trying additional phone changes. |
The Singapore Airlines timing is that airline’s operational guidance, not a universal aviation rule. Aircraft equipment, route, service rollout and rules can change; check the operating carrier’s current instructions for your specific flight.
What not to promise yourself
- Turning off cellular service is the correct onboard configuration, but it is not a guaranteed speed increase.
- Turning off Wi‑Fi defeats the purpose of the connection.
- Disabling Bluetooth, Private Relay, background refresh or a VPN does not automatically create more bandwidth.
- Private Relay has a documented Delta Sync access use case, not a general performance use case.
- VPN timing solves a captive-portal problem; it does not improve the aircraft’s satellite capacity.
- A connected phone may still be slow when many passengers are online or the satellite link is constrained.
The most useful rule is simple: disable cellular service with Airplane Mode, restore Wi‑Fi, complete the airline portal before enabling privacy tunnels, and treat persistent slowness as a possible aircraft-side capacity issue rather than endlessly changing phone settings.
