A funny fantasy can share the comic energy while having little in common with Carl and Donut’s relationship.

Penguin Books Australia’s explanation of LitRPG identifies the genre’s most visible tools: levels, stats, skill trees, quests and resource management (Penguin Books Australia’s LitRPG explainer). Those mechanics are one useful way to compare books, but they are not the whole appeal of DCC.

The evidence supports presenting Cradle as progression-forward fantasy: choose it when the main thing you want is a protagonist whose development and advancement drive the reading experience. If relationships and resistance to the system are the priority
Remember that DCC’s appeal is not limited to mechanics. The reported Atlantic discussion highlights emotional bonds and characters who oppose the game’s rules instead of treating optimization as the only goal.
