You do not need to play another Silent Hill game before SILENT HILL: Townfall. Konami describes Townfall as a full-length, self-contained psychological-horror game, and the series producer says its story and setting differ from SILENT HILL 2 and SILENT HILL f. You can start with Townfall, use SILENT HILL f for a newer standalone story, or choose the SILENT HILL 2 remake if you want a landmark earlier narrative first.
The wording “next Silent Hill game” is now out of date: Townfall released on September 24, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. The remake of the first Silent Hill is in development, but Konami’s 2026 corporate report gives no release date.
The short answer: start with Townfall unless you have a specific reason not to
There is no official prerequisite order for SILENT HILL: Townfall. Nothing in the reviewed Konami or PlayStation material says that you must finish SILENT HILL 2, SILENT HILL f, or any earlier entry to understand it. The most useful way to choose is therefore by the experience you want, not by chronology.

- Choose Silent Hill f if you want another recent, newcomer-friendly story with new characters and a 1960s Japan setting.
- Choose the Silent Hill 2 remake if you want to experience the series’ established psychological-horror template through a remake of the 2001 game.
Those are optional routes, not levels of preparation. Playing an older title may give you a better sense of the series’ recurring mood and ideas, but the official descriptions do not establish that it unlocks a plot explanation in Townfall.

What Townfall is, and why it works as an entry point
Konami calls SILENT HILL: Townfall “a full-length, self-contained psychological horror set against the cold, isolated backdrop of Scotland, 1996.” That “self-contained” description is the clearest answer to the play-order question: the game is presented as a complete experience rather than as a chapter that assumes you have completed a previous title.
Setting and protagonist
You play as Simon Ordell on the remote island of St. Amelia. The isolation is not just a location detail; it defines the situation the game puts you in. The story takes place in Scotland in 1996, separate from the 1960s Japan of Silent Hill f and from the earlier story remade in Silent Hill 2.
How it is played
Townfall is played entirely from a first-person perspective. Its confirmed activities include exploration, evading threats, combat, and narrative-driven puzzles. Simon has limited weapons and tools, so the game is not described as an action-focused shooter. A distinctive tool is the CRTV, a pocket television that Simon uses to tune into unstable signals. That mechanic gives the game its own way to connect investigation, danger, and story discovery.

Screen Burn Interactive is the developer. Annapurna Interactive and Konami are co-publishers. The game is available on PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Konami also announced physical PlayStation 5 preorders, but retailer stock and regional availability can change, so a physical copy should be checked in your country rather than assumed from the announcement.
Is Townfall the next Silent Hill game?
As of October 13, 2026, Townfall is the latest confirmed release in the series, not an unreleased future title. It became available on September 24, 2026. That matters when planning your playthrough: you can buy and play the game now rather than waiting for a launch window.
Konami’s 2026 corporate report also says the company is working on a remake of the first Silent Hill. The report does not provide a release date or a release window, so that project should not be treated as the next scheduled game. If you are choosing what to play before an eventual future release, there is no confirmed date around which to build a schedule.

The table is a choice guide, not a ranking. The official material does not establish that one of these games is essential preparation or superior to the others.
Path one: play Townfall first
This is the cleanest route if Townfall is the game that brought you to the series. Its self-contained description means you are not starting in the middle of a confirmed multi-game plot. You also get the intended contrast of the new setting and first-person presentation without already expecting a particular version of Silent Hill.
Pick this route when
- You want to play the latest released entry now.
- You prefer a new protagonist, location, and story rather than a remake of an older game.
- You like first-person horror and want exploration, evasion, puzzles, and limited-resource combat in that format.
- You are curious about the CRTV’s unstable-signal mechanic and want to discover its purpose without advance assumptions.
What earlier games can and cannot add
Earlier games can provide familiarity with the broad identity of Silent Hill: oppressive psychological horror, investigation, hostile encounters, and stories that use place and perception to create uncertainty. That background is useful as genre context, but it is not an announced requirement for following Simon Ordell’s situation on St. Amelia.
The series producer, Motoi Okamoto, put the relationship this way: “While the story and setting may differ from Silent Hill 2 or Silent Hill f, this game will still retain the feeling of Silent Hill that players are familiar with.” The statement identifies continuity of feeling, not a mandatory narrative sequence. Treat Townfall as its own story unless the game itself provides a connection you want to investigate.
A practical first-play checklist
- Confirm that your system is a PlayStation 5 or a PC that can run the Steam or Epic Games Store version. The available platforms listed by Konami are PS5, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
- Decide whether you want a digital PC copy or a console edition. Physical PS5 availability can vary by region and retailer even though preorders were announced.
- Go in without assuming that the CRTV is a conventional weapon. It is described as a pocket television for tuning unstable signals, so its role is tied to investigation and the game’s fiction.
- Expect several kinds of play rather than a single loop: exploration, evasion, combat, and narrative-driven puzzles are all part of the confirmed design.
Path two: play Silent Hill f first
SILENT HILL f is the best optional starting point if you want a recent entry that explicitly welcomes newcomers. Konami describes it as a new story with new characters and settings and says it can be enjoyed by newcomers as well as returning players. It launched on September 25, 2025.
Why it is a useful companion
Its 1960s Japan setting gives you a different historical and cultural frame from Townfall’s Scotland in 1996. You are not repeating the same location or protagonist before moving to Townfall, and the official description does not make its plot a prerequisite. Playing it first can instead show you how the series’ psychological-horror identity can be applied to a new place and cast.

Access and physical edition
Silent Hill f is confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games, and Microsoft Windows. Konami also announced a day-one physical edition. Regional packaging, stock, and platform storefront details can differ, so verify the edition sold where you live before buying.
Who should choose it
- Newcomers who want an official recommendation that does not assume previous Silent Hill knowledge.
- Players who prefer a brand-new story over revisiting the 2001 narrative.
- Anyone interested in seeing the series outside its familiar American settings before moving to a Scottish island.
Do not choose Silent Hill f because you believe it is required for Townfall. The available statements support it as an optional entry, not as a prerequisite.
Path three: play the Silent Hill 2 remake first
The SILENT HILL 2 remake is the route for readers who want a landmark earlier story before trying a newer game. Konami describes it as a remake of the psychological-horror title originally released in 2001. The remake’s announced platforms are PlayStation 5 and Steam.

What this route gives you
You get the established narrative associated with the second numbered game in a modern remake rather than the new characters and locations of Townfall or Silent Hill f. This can be the right choice if your interest in Townfall began with the series’ reputation and you want to understand one of its best-known reference points first.
What it does not give you
The official sources do not say that the remake’s plot is necessary to understand Townfall. They also do not establish a required order between the remake and Silent Hill f. Playing it first is a preference for historical context and a particular story, not a technical or narrative requirement.

- Players who want to start with a remake of a 2001 story.
- Readers who prefer to experience a widely recognized earlier entry before exploring newer experiments in setting and perspective.

There is an important distinction between series familiarity and plot dependency. The former may make recurring moods or design choices easier to recognize. The latter would mean that Townfall assumes you know a previous game’s events. Konami’s descriptions support the first possibility as optional context, not the second as a requirement.

This order puts the game named in your question first and avoids treating optional background as a barrier.

Is there anything else to read before Townfall?
Konami announced SILENT HILL: Townfall – The Dock House, an official companion comic written by game writer and director Jon McKellan. Digital publication was announced as part of 2000 AD Prog 2500 on September 16, 2026, with physical North American copies announced for September 30, 2026, through Lunar Distribution.
The comic is supplementary reading, not a condition for understanding the game. Read it if you enjoy expanding a game’s world through another medium; do not buy it as required setup. Physical availability and regional stock should be checked directly because those details change.

How much series background is useful?
A little background can help you recognize the series’ design language: psychological horror, uncertain perception, hostile spaces, investigation, and stories in which setting carries emotional weight. You do not need a complete franchise timeline, a list of every monster, or a playthrough of all earlier releases to begin Townfall.
Konami reported more than 17.8 million Silent Hill copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026. That figure includes units shipped, store downloads, and subscription services, so it is not a sales-only total and should not be read as a lifetime figure through October 2026. It demonstrates the series’ reach, not a required reading list.
Bottom line for your decision
Play SILENT HILL: Townfall first if it is the game you want. It is already available, is described as full-length and self-contained, and follows Simon Ordell through a first-person psychological-horror story on St. Amelia in Scotland in 1996. Choose SILENT HILL f first for a newcomer-friendly new story in 1960s Japan, or choose the SILENT HILL 2 remake first for the earlier 2001 story in modernized form. All three are legitimate entry points; none is established as mandatory preparation for Townfall.
