There is no single answer to “What should I play after this PS2 game?” because the right follow-up depends on what you actually loved: bright 3D platforming, stealth, psychological horror, mythic combat, cinematic storytelling, or systems-heavy exploration. Use the map below to identify your PS2 playstyle, then choose between a direct remake and a modern game that preserves the same appeal in a different form.
| If you loved on PS2 | Start with on PS5 | What carries over | Main adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, or another colorful 3D platformer | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart | Platforming, gadgets, shooting, collectibles and vivid worlds | More elaborate combat and much faster traversal |
| A direct survival-horror classic | Silent Hill 2 | The 2001 PS2 premise, psychological horror and puzzle-solving | A modern over-the-shoulder presentation and redesigned pacing |
| Shadow of the Colossus | Shadow of the Colossus (2018 remake) | Colossus climbing, environmental puzzles and lonely exploration | Updated controls, lighting and visual detail |
| God of War or another mythic action game | God of War (2018), followed by Ragnarök | Kratos, mythological conflict and weighty melee combat | A more deliberate camera, broader exploration and heavier character drama |
| Stealth and stylish traversal | Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut | Quiet exploration, precision melee, infiltration and a strong visual identity | An open-world structure replaces compact mission hubs |
| Narrative action or cinematic horror | The Last of Us: Part I | Story-led progression, tense encounters and resource decisions | Less fantastical combat and a mostly linear route |
| Older catalog texture | PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog | Access to legacy platformers and familiar PS2-era design | Catalog selection and features vary by region |
How to choose the right PS5 follow-up
Start with the feeling you want to preserve, not the exact title. A PS2 favorite may be remembered for its camera and movement, its atmosphere, its combat rhythm, its collectible loop, or its willingness to let you get lost. Modern PS5 games often keep one or two of those traits while changing the others.
When a remake is the priority
A remake is the best route when the original’s setting, characters and core structure matter more than period-specific controls. Silent Hill 2 and Shadow of the Colossus are the clearest examples in this group. They preserve the identity of their PS2 predecessors while rebuilding presentation and control for a modern audience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen a spiritual successor is better
A modern successor is preferable when you want the same kind of play rather than the same story. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut and The Last of Us: Part I each translate a recognizable PS2-era appeal into a larger, more contemporary production.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check your tolerance for modernization
- Camera: PS2 games commonly used fixed or semi-fixed cameras; the recommendations here mostly use a controllable third-person camera.
- Scale: Open-world games create more freedom but less of the tightly authored pacing found in many PS2 adventures.
- Combat: Modern encounters usually add more enemy behaviors, upgrade choices and difficulty settings.
- Tone: A colorful platformer, bleak horror game and historical samurai drama can all share exploration and melee mechanics while feeling completely different.
Best colorful platformer: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
If your PS2 reference point is Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter or another bright 3D platformer, begin here. Rift Apart combines shooting, gadgets, acrobatics, collectible hunting and sharply varied worlds. PlayStation describes it as the biggest and most graphically stunning Ratchet & Clank outing, and highlights its Rift Tether and DualSense features (PlayStation.Blog, January 16, 2025).
Why the match works
- Movement: Traversal is quick and expressive, with platforming routes woven directly into combat arenas.
- Combat: The weapon roster is broader and more tactical than in the early PS2 games, but weapons still function as playful gadgets rather than grim military equipment.
- World design: Levels encourage detours for collectibles, optional challenges and dimensional surprises.
- Presentation: The vivid color palette and animated timing preserve the accessible tone associated with the series.
What changes from the PS2 formula
Expect less of the slower, exploratory feel of an early 2000s platformer. Rift Apart moves rapidly between set pieces, firefights and dimensional transitions. Its combat has more upgrade decisions, and the PS5 presentation makes every arena denser with effects. If your favorite part of Jak and Daxter was uninterrupted platforming with minimal shooting, this is a partial rather than perfect match.
Useful baseline comparisons
PlayStation’s generational guide describes Jak and Daxter as an expansive 3D world built around puzzles and collectibles, while Sly Cooper emphasizes stealth and toon-shaded visuals. Choose Rift Apart for the former’s movement-and-collection appeal; choose the stealth recommendation below if the latter is what you remember most.

Best direct horror lineage: Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 2 is the most direct answer for someone asking which PS2 game has a modern PS5 remake. PlayStation identifies it as the iconic 2001 survival-horror experience, originally released for PlayStation 2, that has been completely remade for PS5. The premise remains James Sunderland’s search for his wife in the strange town of Silent Hill (PlayStation, accessed October 18, 2026).

Why it fits a horror-first player
- Psychological focus: The central tension comes from uncertainty, guilt and interpretation rather than constant combat.
- Exploration: Progress depends on reading the environment, finding keys and solving contextual puzzles.
- Combat pressure: Encounters are intentionally uncomfortable; ammunition and healing are resources to manage, not permission to fight everything.
- Atmosphere: Sound, fog, darkness and environmental detail do as much work as enemy design.
How the remake changes the experience
The remake uses a modern over-the-shoulder view and rebuilt environments, so familiar locations no longer behave exactly like their PS2 versions. That can make navigation more immediate, but it also reduces some of the visual abstraction that defined the original. Treat it as a reinterpretation with the same narrative foundation, not as a pixel-for-pixel museum piece.
Who should choose another game
If you want fast action, frequent upgrades or a power fantasy, Silent Hill 2 will feel deliberately restrained. It is also a poor substitute for a colorful platformer simply because both games feature third-person exploration. Choose it when dread, symbolism and puzzle-driven progress are the reasons you remember your PS2 favorite.
Best remake for solitary adventure: Shadow of the Colossus
The 2018 Shadow of the Colossus remake is the natural destination if that 2005 PS2 adventure is the game you are trying to follow. PlayStation describes it as a faithful retelling that preserves the colossus-climbing and puzzle-solving core (PlayStation.Blog, January 6, 2025).
The core loop remains unusual
- Ride through a largely empty landscape to locate a colossus.
- Study its body and the surrounding terrain for a route upward.
- Use your grip, movement and limited stamina to reach marked weak points.
- Interpret visual and audio clues to solve the encounter rather than relying on a conventional health-bar duel.
Why it still feels distinctive
The game’s scale comes from contrast: long, quiet rides are followed by a single enormous puzzle. There are no towns filled with side quests or a conventional loot ladder. Exploration, navigation and boss interpretation are the content.

What the remake improves
Updated lighting, character models, environmental detail and control options make the journey easier to read on a modern display. The emotional structure is unchanged: the landscape remains lonely, and each victory carries an unsettling cost. Players who want a large checklist of activities should choose an open-world action game instead; players who want memorable set-piece puzzles should start here.
Best mythic action route: God of War and Ragnarök
For a PS2-era God of War fan, the strongest modern route is to play God of War (2018) and then Ragnarök. PlayStation presents the 2018 game as Kratos’ modern return, with more deliberate storytelling than the earlier Greek-era adventures.
What carries over
- Mythology remains the foundation, but the setting and pantheon change.
- Close-quarters combat still rewards timing, positioning and weapon variety.
- Large enemies and environmental set pieces remain important milestones.
- Progression adds new abilities and equipment without abandoning the immediate physicality of each fight.
The biggest adjustment
The camera stays close to Kratos, making every strike feel heavier but reducing the distant spectacle of the PS2 games. The story also spends more time on family, grief and responsibility. Exploration branches into optional areas and environmental puzzles, so the pace is less relentlessly linear.

Choosing between the two modern games
Play God of War first if you want the narrative reset and the introduction to the Norse setting. Continue to Ragnarök when you want a larger cast, broader combat options and a direct continuation of that relationship-driven story. They work best as a paired route rather than interchangeable alternatives.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Best stealth-adjacent open world: Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut
If your PS2 favorite was Sly Cooper, a stealth-heavy action game or a title built around stylish traversal, Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut is the closest modern substitute in this list. PlayStation describes it as a major contemporary experience built around samurai combat, exploration and a strong sense of place.
Where the overlap is strongest
- Approach choice: You can enter many encounters openly or use concealment, distractions and carefully chosen routes.
- Traversal: The environment itself guides you toward objectives through visual landmarks and natural cues.
- Precision: Melee fights reward reading an opponent and selecting the right response rather than simply mashing attacks.
- Style: Color, framing and animation give ordinary travel a deliberate visual identity.
Why it is not a straight stealth replacement
Stealth is one tool inside a large open world, not the entire structure. You will spend substantial time in direct sword fights, collecting upgrades and completing optional activities. If you want compact, replayable infiltration stages, the open-world scale may feel diffuse. If you want to roam, discover quiet activities and switch between stealth and combat, it is a strong evolution of that PS2 appeal.
Best cinematic action-horror route: The Last of Us: Part I
The Last of Us: Part I suits players who remember a PS2 game for its narrative momentum, tense encounters and carefully staged environments rather than for a specific fantasy setting. PlayStation presents it as a PS5-enhanced version with rebuilt visuals, combat and enemy AI.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Story integration: Character relationships and plot progression are built directly into the movement between encounters.
- Resource management: Ammunition, crafting materials and healing items force decisions about when to fight, evade or improvise.
- Encounter variety: Human opponents and infected enemies create different pressures and can interact in the same space.
- Accessibility: The modern presentation includes a wider set of options than the original PS2 generation could provide.
How it differs from PS2 action games
The route is primarily linear, so it does not replace the freedom of a sprawling adventure. Combat is also intentionally vulnerable: even a successful encounter can consume scarce supplies. Choose it for sustained narrative intensity and tactical tension, not for carefree exploration or constant boss battles.

Other modern PlayStation directions
Final Fantasy VII Remake and Intergrade
If the PS2 game you miss was a party-based RPG, Final Fantasy VII Remake offers a modern hybrid of real-time attacks, command selection and character switching. PlayStation’s generational guide lists it and Intergrade among its major contemporary experiences. It is a better fit for players who remember cinematic storytelling, party dynamics and upgrade systems than for anyone seeking a compact platformer.
Returnal
Returnal belongs on the shortlist for players who loved difficult action, pattern learning and repeated attempts. Its structure is more demanding and its science-fiction atmosphere is much harsher than a typical PS2 adventure. Choose it when mastery and replayability matter more than a straightforward story campaign.
Dark Cloud as a reference point
PlayStation describes Dark Cloud as a hybrid RPG, city builder and action game. If that combination is what you want, prioritize modern games with meaningful crafting, settlement or upgrade systems rather than judging by camera angle alone. The recommendations above vary widely in how much town-building or party management they provide, so this is a case where the remembered systems matter more than the franchise name.
Finding older PS2-style games through PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus can be a useful discovery route when you want the texture of older platformers instead of a full modern remake. PlayStation’s platformer guide points to the Classics Catalog and Game Catalog, including examples such as Ape Escape, Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper.
Do not assume that a title appears in every country or remains available indefinitely. PlayStation warns: “The PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog lineup may differ in certain regions.” Check the catalog shown on your own PS5 account before choosing a subscription or planning a playthrough.
What to check before starting a classic
- Whether the exact game and edition appears in your region’s catalog.
- Whether the listing is a downloadable classic, a streamed game or a PS4 release playable on PS5.
- Which save, rewind, display and control features are included with that edition.
- Whether access depends on an active membership tier and whether the game is scheduled to leave the catalog.
A practical decision path
- Name the dominant memory. Say “I loved the gadgets and jumping,” “I loved being frightened,” “I loved solving giant bosses,” or “I loved stealth and roaming.”
- Choose remake or successor. Pick Silent Hill 2 or Shadow of the Colossus when continuity matters; pick Rift Apart, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima or The Last of Us: Part I when you want the same appeal modernized.
- Set your scale preference. Select a focused campaign if you dislike open-world errands; select Ghost of Tsushima or modern God of War if exploration is part of the attraction.
- Set your intensity. Choose Rift Apart for playful action, Silent Hill 2 for psychological dread, The Last of Us: Part I for resource pressure or Returnal for repeated high-difficulty runs.
- Verify access. Confirm the PS5 edition, remake version or regional PlayStation Plus listing on the current PlayStation Store before buying or subscribing.
Direct remakes versus modern substitutes
| Type | Recommended game | Best for | What you should expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct remake | Silent Hill 2 | Players who want the same premise and psychological horror lineage | Rebuilt presentation and changed camera feel around the original story |
| Faithful adventure remake | Shadow of the Colossus | Players who want the original climb-and-solve structure | Modernized visuals and controls with the same unusual boss design |
| Series evolution | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart | Players who want colorful platforming and gadget combat | Faster movement, denser combat and PS5-focused presentation |
| Modern generational route | God of War and Ragnarök | Players who want mythic action with deeper character drama | A closer camera, broader exploration and a more deliberate narrative |
| New setting, related playstyle | Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut | Players who want stealth options, traversal and precise melee | An open world where stealth shares space with direct combat |
| Linear cinematic reinterpretation | The Last of Us: Part I | Players who want narrative pressure and tactical encounters | Resource scarcity, enemy AI and a mostly linear campaign |
What not to use as a deciding factor
There are no official review scores, sales totals or player-count figures in the cited PlayStation material, so those numbers cannot tell you which game follows your PS2 favorite best. The useful distinctions are genre, tone, camera, control feel, remake fidelity, difficulty and access route. A technically impressive game can still be the wrong choice if it removes the specific activity you loved.
