If Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse appeals to you because it combines active whip combat with a world that rewards searching and backtracking, start with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Konami producer Tsutomu Taniguchi was reported by PC Gamer to have said that the team drew “significant inspiration” from Symphony of the Night when choosing an exploration-oriented design. That makes it the clearest lineage match, although it does not mean the two games control or progress identically.
After that, choose among modern metroidvanias according to what you want to preserve: deliberate melee timing, rapid movement, ranged attacks, interconnected-map exploration, or upgrades that change where and how you can fight. The recommendations below use those distinctions rather than treating every side-scrolling action game as an exact substitute.
What Belmont’s Curse is promising
Official descriptions position Belmont’s Curse as a 2D action-exploration game built around Rose Belmont. Konami describes whip mechanics that expand combat possibilities, while the official game site emphasizes faster, more fluid play and fast-paced whip fighting. The PlayStation listing adds an important exploration detail: the whip is used for both movement and combat, and equipment discovered while exploring can be combined to create a preferred playstyle.
The story sends Rose beneath the Paris catacombs and into Dracula’s castle. That setting matters because the game is presented as a journey through connected spaces rather than a sequence of unrelated stages. The strongest comparison criteria are therefore:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Exploration structure: whether discoveries lead you back into earlier areas or reveal routes through a connected world.
- Combat feel: whether fights depend on deliberate weapon timing, fast movement, ranged attacks, or a mixture.
- Interaction between exploration and combat: whether new equipment changes your options in battle as well as opening new passages.
Nintendo’s Switch listing and PlayStation’s listing both give October 15, 2026 as the release date. The authoritative information available on October 13, 2026 described launch as two days away, so check the current store listing for present availability rather than relying on an old release-status assumption. Konami also announced a Midnight Edition, but its contents, physical format and retailer availability were not established in the announcement.
1. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night — the closest historical fit
Symphony of the Night is the first game to play if you want to understand the design lineage behind Belmont’s Curse. Its central pleasure is building a mental map of a large castle, finding abilities and equipment, and returning to places that were previously inaccessible. Combat remains active and weapon-based, but exploration determines how your character develops and which routes become possible.
It is not a promise of identical mechanics. Belmont’s Curse foregrounds Rose’s whip, including whip-assisted movement, while Symphony of the Night gives its player a broader role-playing toolkit. Expect a different rhythm in attacks, equipment management and character progression. The useful connection is the exploration-first structure: the castle is something to learn, revisit and gradually decode.
Choose it when you want the most direct Castlevania context, a map that keeps unfolding, and discoveries that affect both movement and combat. If your priority is a modern control scheme or a much faster dash-heavy pace, one of the newer games below may feel more immediate.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

2. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night — modern gothic exploration with a large combat toolkit
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a natural follow-up for players who want a gothic setting, a substantial interconnected map and a combat system with more build variety than a single primary weapon. Its exploration loop revolves around finding abilities and equipment that let you reach new sections, then revisiting earlier rooms with a stronger character.
The key difference from a whip-centered game is breadth. You can experiment with different weapons, spells and passive bonuses instead of asking one weapon to solve every encounter. That makes it a good choice if the equipment-combination idea in Belmont’s Curse is what interests you most. It is less suitable if you are specifically looking for the tactile identity of a whip as both your main attack and traversal tool.
Best for
- Players who want a direct modern continuation of the gothic action-exploration tradition.
- Players who enjoy changing builds as new equipment drops.
- Players who prefer a broad arsenal over a tightly focused signature weapon.
3. Hollow Knight — the strongest map-and-discovery alternative
Hollow Knight is an excellent choice when the exploration side matters more than matching Castlevania’s visual language. Its world is built around interlocking regions, ability-gated passages and repeated returns to places you could see but not yet reach. The map becomes useful only after you learn how its districts connect, so navigation is part of the challenge rather than a menu between fights.
Recommended Free Tools
Combat is more compact and timing-driven than the equipment-heavy approach associated with many gothic role-playing metroidvanias. Your main weapon has a clear, consistent feel, while charms and movement abilities let you adjust how you approach enemies. That makes combat readable and deliberate, but it does not reproduce the variety of a whip that can be used for traversal.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Pick Hollow Knight if your favorite part of Belmont’s Curse is wondering what lies beyond the next locked route, remembering a suspicious ledge, and returning later with a new movement ability. Pick another recommendation if you mainly want a large inventory of weapons and armor.
4. Blasphemous — deliberate melee in a dangerous, interconnected world
Blasphemous suits players who want heavier, more deliberate melee combat and a grim atmosphere. Exploration is built around branching areas, secrets and routes that become manageable as you learn enemy patterns and acquire new abilities. The game asks you to treat every room as a combat problem, with positioning and attack timing carrying more weight than rapid button presses.
Its combat is closer to a committed sword strike than to a flexible whip. Attacks have stronger animation commitment, and mistakes can be costly. That makes it a useful contrast: if the appeal of Belmont’s Curse is active combat inside an exploratory map, Blasphemous preserves the tension while changing the weapon language and tone.
Choose it when
- You prefer weighty attacks and pattern recognition.
- You want a world where hidden routes and optional rooms reward careful searching.
- You are comfortable with a harsher difficulty curve than a traditional power-fantasy Castlevania.
5. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown — movement-first exploration with precise combat
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a strong option if the traversal promise of Belmont’s Curse is as important to you as its fighting. Its exploration is built around acquiring movement abilities, reading the environment and using mobility to reach previously inaccessible areas. Combat is fast and precise, with parries, aerial movement and special abilities shaping how encounters are handled.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This is not a gothic castle game, and its platforming emphasis is much stronger. The comparison is structural: both ask you to connect movement upgrades with exploration and combat decisions. Choose it when you want a polished, modern control response and frequent traversal challenges. Choose Symphony of the Night or Bloodstained when atmosphere, equipment and Castlevania-style progression matter more.
6. Axiom Verge — exploration and discovery for players who prefer ranged combat
Axiom Verge takes the same broad exploration framework in a very different direction. Its world is labyrinthine, its secrets are often environmental, and its weapons are primarily ranged. Progress depends on finding tools that let you interpret the map differently, open new routes and survive encounters that were previously impractical.
It is a good recommendation if “similar combat and exploration” means you want the same feeling of gradually decoding a hostile 2D world, not the same medieval or gothic presentation. The combat will feel less personal than a whip or sword because distance and projectile choice are central. That contrast can be valuable: it shows whether your real preference is melee timing or exploration-led progression.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. Ori and the Will of the Wisps — fluid movement with lighter combat
Ori and the Will of the Wisps is best for readers who want exceptionally fluid movement through a connected map. Abilities transform how you traverse the environment, and returning to earlier regions often reveals shortcuts, collectibles or entirely new paths. Combat is more mobile and ability-driven than traditional Castlevania fighting, with an emphasis on flow rather than extended weapon exchanges.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose it when movement, atmosphere and route-finding are your priorities. It is a weaker match if you want the visceral impact of a dedicated melee weapon or a darker gothic tone. The exploration principle remains relevant, but the emotional register and combat tempo are distinct.
How to choose without buying the wrong kind of metroidvania
If you want the closest Castlevania lineage
Start with Symphony of the Night. It is the only recommendation directly supported by the reported design-inspiration statement from a Belmont’s Curse producer. Follow it with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night if you want the same broad gothic action-exploration tradition in a modern format.
If you want the deepest map exploration
Choose Hollow Knight. Its appeal is the act of learning a large connected world and using new movement abilities to reinterpret old spaces. Axiom Verge offers a similar discovery mindset with ranged combat and a science-fiction setting.

If you want the most deliberate combat
Choose Blasphemous. Its slower, more committed attacks reward patience and enemy knowledge. If you want precision without the same heaviness, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown provides a faster alternative.
If movement is your favorite weapon
Choose Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown or Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Both make traversal abilities central, but the former gives combat a larger role while the latter emphasizes fluid movement and atmosphere.
Quick Recap
A practical play order
- Play Symphony of the Night first if you want the clearest explanation of the exploration-oriented Castlevania lineage.
- Move to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night if you want gothic presentation and a wider equipment system.
- Try Hollow Knight if your favorite moments involved mapping, backtracking and finding ability-gated routes.
- Use Blasphemous or Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown to test whether your preferred combat is heavy and deliberate or fast and movement-focused.
- Finish with Axiom Verge or Ori and the Will of the Wisps if you want to explore the same broad structure through ranged combat or traversal-led design.
What to verify before buying Belmont’s Curse
- Confirm the current release status on the Nintendo or PlayStation store, since the official listings gave October 15, 2026 as the launch date and the available announcement was dated before launch.
- Check which edition and platform you are selecting. The announced Midnight Edition was named, but its contents and format were not specified in the announcement.
- Look for gameplay details showing how whip traversal, equipment combinations and map progression work in practice; those are the features most relevant to choosing a follow-up.
