Choose a construction drill by the material, hole size and depth, drilling frequency, and whether the job includes chiseling—not by a headline power number. For common concrete and masonry anchor work, an SDS-Plus rotary hammer may be the right starting category, but its rated diameter range, bit connection, operating modes, handling, power platform, and dust-control options must match the actual specification.

Use the workflow below to turn a project requirement into a defensible tool choice, then verify every model-specific figure in the current manual and local safety requirements.

Start with the work, not the drill’s power rating

A drill that is excellent for a few small masonry holes can be the wrong purchase for repeated deep holes, overhead work, or demolition. Write down the job before comparing models. The first four inputs are substrate, hole diameter, hole depth, and duty cycle. Add the drilling direction, access constraints, and whether chiseling is required.

Identify the substrate

Concrete and masonry are the clearest use cases for hammer drills and rotary hammers. The exact base material still matters: a dense structural concrete slab, hollow block, brick, and mortar joint do not impose the same demands on a bit or mechanism. A tool’s published capacity is meaningful only for the materials and modes covered by its manual.

  • Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons

For wood, metal, plastic, or mixed-material work, confirm that the candidate has a rotary-only mode and that the manufacturer lists the intended bit types. Do not assume that a tool marketed for concrete drilling is automatically suitable for every non-masonry material.

Define the hole before choosing the motor

Record the smallest and largest diameters, the required depth, and the number of holes per shift. Include clearance for dust removal and the length of bit that must project from the chuck. A tool whose optimal range sits above or below your normal hole size can be inefficient even if its maximum advertised diameter looks impressive.

Decide whether chiseling is part of the job

Anchor drilling, tile removal, chasing, light correction of masonry, and demolition are different tasks. If chiseling is required, look for a dedicated chisel mode and confirm the manufacturer’s stated chiseling capability. A drilling-only tool may be adequate for anchors but cannot replace a rotary hammer designed to deliver impact without rotation.

Project input Why it changes the purchase What to verify in the specification
Base material Determines bit type, impact demand, and allowable operating mode Listed materials and the current manual’s application limits
Hole diameter Sets the useful part of the tool’s capacity range Rated or optimal diameter for the actual material
Hole depth Affects bit length, dust evacuation, and working time Maximum stated depth, bit-length compatibility, and cleaning procedure
Number of holes Separates occasional work from production duty Power source, cooling guidance, vibration data, and service intervals
Chiseling Requires a mode that can impact without rotation Explicit chiseling capability and compatible chisels
Working direction Changes balance, fatigue, and dust exposure Recommended drilling direction, weight, grip, and extraction arrangement

Choose the right tool class

SDS-Plus rotary hammer

SDS-Plus rotary hammers are a relevant category for everyday drilling and light-to-medium chiseling in concrete and masonry. The SDS-Plus connection is commonly identified as TE-C in Hilti’s catalog. A model in this class is worth considering when the project calls for frequent anchor holes, masonry penetrations, or occasional chiseling and the specified diameters fit its range.

Hilti’s selection material compares SDS-Plus models by optimal drilling diameter, main drilling direction, chiseling capability, and vibration-reduction features. Treat those as comparison axes, not as a universal ranking. Two tools with the same chuck family can have very different capacities, balance, and duty guidance.

Hammer drill

A hammer drill is another relevant category for concrete and masonry drilling. DEWALT’s official catalog lists hammer drills for those materials. A hammer drill and a rotary hammer are not interchangeable for every task: check the chosen model’s own capacity, impact mechanism, mode selection, and intended frequency of use. For a small number of holes, a hammer drill may fit the requirement; for repeated anchor drilling or work that includes chiseling, a rotary hammer’s stated capabilities may be more appropriate.

SDS-Max and other interfaces

The cited manufacturer catalog lists SDS-Max connections as TE-Y as well as SDS-Plus connections as TE-C. These are different interfaces. A bit made for one cannot simply be inserted into the other, so select the tool and bit as a matched system. If a project specification calls for SDS-Max, do not substitute an SDS-Plus tool merely because both are described as rotary hammers. Verify the model’s diameter range, operating modes, and handling requirements in the current documentation.

Category Typical decision point Information that remains model-specific
SDS-Plus rotary hammer Concrete or masonry drilling with possible light-to-medium chiseling Optimal diameter, depth, impact energy, vibration features, and duty limits
Hammer drill Appropriate masonry drilling when the selected model lists the required capacity Concrete capacity, impact settings, bit system, and sustained-use guidance
SDS-Max rotary hammer Use when the project or bit specification requires the SDS-Max/TE-Y interface Capacity, weight, chiseling performance, and accessory compatibility are not stated in the cited material

Read capacity and modes as a system

Capacity is more than a maximum diameter printed on a box. Compare the model’s optimal drilling range with your normal hole sizes, then check the stated depth, material, drilling direction, and duty guidance. Hilti’s selection table makes optimal diameter, main drilling direction, and chiseling capability explicit comparison fields; use the same fields when reviewing other brands.

Three modes on the Hilti TE 3-C example

Hilti describes the TE 3-C as a triple-mode SDS-Plus rotary hammer for hammer drilling, rotary-only drilling, and chiseling in concrete and masonry. Those modes explain why a rotary hammer can cover more than one operation, but they do not make its figures a general benchmark for all SDS-Plus tools.

TE 3-C specification Stated figure How to use it
Single impact energy 1.8 ft-lbs Model-specific impact figure; compare only with equivalent manufacturer specifications and operating conditions
Hammer-drilling speed 1070 rpm Use alongside the stated material and diameter range, not as a stand-alone performance score
Full hammering frequency 5160 impacts/minute Confirms the published operating characteristic of this model; it is not a market-wide target
Operating modes Hammer drilling, rotary-only drilling, and chiseling Check that the mode required by your work is explicitly available

The TE 3-C figures belong to that product page. They should not be generalized to every SDS-Plus rotary hammer, and they do not establish independent test results.

Check these bit details

  • Connection: SDS-Plus/TE-C and SDS-Max/TE-Y are not interchangeable.
  • Material: Choose a bit listed for the concrete, masonry, or other substrate named in the project specification.
  • Diameter: Select the exact anchor or penetration diameter, not merely a size within the tool’s advertised maximum.
  • Length: Allow for the required embedment, the drill’s working clearance, and dust evacuation. A long bit may be unnecessary and harder to control.
  • Mode: Use rotary-only operation when the bit and material require it; use hammer drilling only when both the bit and tool are rated for impact.

For procurement, “SDS-Plus concrete and masonry drill bits” is a useful category description, but it is not a specification. The purchase order should name the connection, diameter, length, and base material.

Compare corded, cordless, and platform implications

Power source affects uptime, mobility, and the number of items the crew must manage. A corded tool avoids battery charging and may suit a fixed indoor work area with reliable power. A cordless tool can simplify movement, work at height, or operate where power access is limited, but runtime, charging logistics, and spare batteries become part of the system.

Questions for a cordless purchase

  • Does the tool use a battery platform already approved for the crew?
  • How many batteries and chargers are needed to cover the planned shift?
  • Does the manufacturer publish capacity or duty guidance for the diameter and material you need?
  • Will adding a dust extractor, light, or other accessory change balance or runtime?

Questions for a corded purchase

  • Is the cord length and jobsite power distribution adequate without unsafe extensions?
  • Does the tool’s weight and cable routing suit overhead or ladder work?
  • What protection, inspection, and cleaning steps does the current manual require?

No single power source is inherently best. Choose the arrangement that keeps the tool within its rated use while minimizing interruptions and handling risk.

Evaluate weight, orientation, vibration, and control

Weight matters most when holes are drilled overhead, from a ladder, or in a repetitive pattern. Compare the complete working weight, including the bit, battery if applicable, side handle, and dust attachment. Check whether the manufacturer identifies a main drilling direction and whether the balance suits that orientation.

Vibration-reduction features can affect comfort and exposure management. Hilti’s selection material includes vibration-reduction features as a comparison field. “Active vibration control” is not a universal performance grade, however; ask which model includes it, under what operating mode, and what the manual says about exposure and breaks.

Torque-control or clutch features can also matter when a bit binds. Confirm the feature in the exact model documentation rather than assuming that every hammer drill or rotary hammer has the same protection. A control feature does not remove the need for correct stance, a secure side handle, and the manufacturer’s operating procedure.

Treat dust control as a complete setup

Dust control is not an accessory chosen in isolation. The tool, bit, extraction attachment, hose, and vacuum must work together, and the jobsite’s hazard assessment and rules still apply.

Options described by the manufacturer material

Hilti describes hollow bits and dust-removal systems as available options. These can change drilling practice, consumable cost, and the vacuum connection required. Confirm the exact attachment and hose arrangement before treating a system as ready for production.

The specific OSHA example

Hilti states that its TE 30 page meets OSHA 1926.1153 Table 1 requirements when that tool is used with a TE DRS-D system and a Hilti vacuum. This is a manufacturer statement for that specified tool, attachment, and vacuum combination. It is not a blanket compliance claim for other tools, accessories, vacuums, materials, or jobsites.

Use a repeatable buying workflow

  1. Write the task statement. Record substrate, hole diameters, depth, number of holes, direction, and whether chiseling is required.
  2. Select a tool class. Shortlist an SDS-Plus rotary hammer, hammer drill, or another interface only after the task statement is complete.
  3. Filter by capacity. Remove models whose rated or optimal range does not cover the normal hole size and depth.
  4. Confirm modes. Check for rotary-only, hammer-drilling, and chiseling modes as required by the work.
  5. Match the interface. Make the tool connection and every planned bit connection identical: SDS-Plus/TE-C or SDS-Max/TE-Y.
  6. Check handling. Compare working weight, orientation, side-handle design, vibration features, and torque-control information.
  7. Build the dust system. Add the compatible extraction attachment and vacuum, then verify any compliance statement applies to that exact combination.
  8. Validate the fleet decision. For cordless tools, confirm battery compatibility and shift coverage; for corded tools, confirm safe power access.
  9. Read the current manual. Recheck operating limits, cleaning, inspection, bit installation, and service requirements immediately before purchase.
  10. Document the selection. Keep the project requirement, model number, bit list, extraction components, and operator instructions together.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake What goes wrong Better check
Choosing by impact number alone The tool may not suit the required diameter, depth, or material Compare the complete capacity and application data
Assuming all rotary hammers accept the same bits The bit cannot lock into the chuck or is unsafe to use Match SDS-Plus/TE-C or SDS-Max/TE-Y exactly
Buying a hammer drill for chiseling The required impact-without-rotation mode may be absent Confirm explicit chiseling capability
Ignoring drilling direction Weight, balance, and dust handling become impractical Use the manufacturer’s main-direction and handling information
Adding a generic vacuum The attachment may not fit or support the claimed control method Verify the manufacturer’s exact tool, attachment, and vacuum combination
Using maximum diameter as normal capacity Production drilling can be slow, stressful, or outside optimal use Compare your usual hole size with the stated optimal range
Forgetting the platform cost Batteries, chargers, bits, and extraction parts are missing from the budget List the complete working system before approving the purchase

Cleaning, inspection, and support should influence the purchase

Manufacturer materials include the question “How do I clean my rotary hammer?” The practical buying lesson is to check the cleaning and inspection procedure before committing to a model. The current manual should specify how to remove dust, inspect the chuck and bit, maintain ventilation openings, and identify service conditions.

At a minimum, plan a safe shutdown routine: disconnect corded tools or remove the battery, let a hot tool cool, remove the bit, and clean it using only the methods and materials permitted by the manual. Do not blow dust into sealed bearings or electrical components if the manufacturer prohibits that method. Record damaged cords, housings, handles, chucks, or extraction connections and take the tool out of service when the manual requires professional inspection.

Ask the supplier about replacement chucks or seals, bit availability, warranty terms, service locations, and the expected lead time for critical accessories. These details are not performance figures, but they determine whether the selected tool can remain productive on a construction schedule.

How to handle “best” tool questions

What SDS-Plus rotary hammer handles drilling and chiseling?

There is no universal answer without the hole sizes, material, depth, frequency, and chisel workload. A suitable candidate must explicitly list both hammer drilling and chiseling, use the required SDS-Plus/TE-C bits, and cover the project’s optimal diameter range. The Hilti TE 3-C is an example of a triple-mode SDS-Plus model, but its published specifications should not be treated as a ranking of every available tool.

What is the best SDS-Max rotary hammer with active vibration control?

“Best” cannot be established from the interface and one feature name alone. First require SDS-Max/TE-Y compatibility, then compare the project’s diameter and depth, chiseling demand, working orientation, weight, vibration information, dust-control options, and service support. The cited material does not establish an independent ranking or test result for SDS-Max models.

Verify current information before ordering

The figures and statements discussed here come from US-facing Hilti and DEWALT manufacturer pages and catalogs retrieved on October 13, 2026. Product pages, model availability, manuals, and accessory compatibility can change. Recheck the current manufacturer documentation before purchase, and apply the project specification, jobsite hazard assessment, and applicable local requirements.

No independent performance tests, firsthand-use results, or price comparison establish one model as the best construction drill. A sound purchase is the one whose documented capacity, modes, interface, power system, handling, and dust-control arrangement all match the work you actually have to perform.
