The right garment depends first on the function you need, not on how advanced it sounds. Passive compression provides deep-pressure and proprioceptive cues; haptic textiles use vibration or other signals; EMS/TENS garments stimulate nerves or muscles; and soft exoskeletons add mechanical assistance. These functions can be combined, but they have different fitting, safety, maintenance and support requirements.

Before buying, define the task, test freedom of movement and pressure during that task, verify washing and battery procedures, and check whether qualified fitting or clinical support is available. Simple adaptive construction—such as a front opening, elastic waist or zipper pull—may improve independence more reliably than electronics.

Start by defining the assistance you actually need

“Assistive movement” is an umbrella term. A sleeve that gently compresses a limb does not work like a powered garment that stimulates muscles, and a vibrating shirt that gives a directional cue does not physically move a joint. Write down the task that is difficult, when it fails, and what kind of help would make it easier. Then compare garments that provide that specific help.

Passive compression for body awareness

Compression garments apply distributed pressure without batteries, motors or electrodes. The pressure can provide deep-pressure and proprioceptive cues—sensory information about where a limb is and how it is moving. This may be useful when the goal is steadier body awareness rather than direct muscle activation.

Compression is not the same as immobilization. The garment should support the intended body area while allowing the joint to move through the range required for walking, reaching or transferring. A garment that feels supportive while standing but bunches behind the knee when sitting is a poor match for the real task.

Haptic textiles for guidance and alerts

Haptic clothing uses vibration or another tactile signal to communicate. A vibration might indicate direction, timing, posture or an alert from a connected system. AQ-Tech describes functional textiles that can “vibrate to guide, heat to protect, stimulate to rehabilitate, or light up to alert.” The signal itself is the assistance; it does not necessarily create force at a joint.

Ask what the wearer must do when the signal appears. If the user cannot reliably feel vibration through clothing, has difficulty interpreting multiple patterns, or cannot reach the controls, the feature may add complexity without solving the task. Look for adjustable intensity, clear signal patterns and a way to mute or disable alerts.

EMS and TENS garments for stimulation

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) deliver electrical pulses through skin-contact electrodes. Their intended effects differ by system and indication. Electrode placement, skin contact and program settings matter, so an active garment should have an indication-specific fitting process rather than a one-size-fits-all promise.

Confirm who sets the program, how calibration is repeated, what skin checks are required and which conditions or devices make use inappropriate. If the manufacturer does not clearly explain clinical oversight, fitting, contraindications and support, pause the purchase until those answers are available.

Soft exoskeletons and textile actuators

Soft exoskeletons use textile structures, cables or other actuators to add mechanical assistance while remaining more flexible than a rigid brace. AQ-Tech presents textile actuators as a development field that must balance washability, energy consumption, encapsulation and comfort. A powered garment therefore brings both mechanical and electronic questions: how much assistance is delivered, how it is controlled, how the battery is protected and what happens when power runs out.

Some products combine categories—for example, compression fabric with sensors and stimulation. Evaluate each function separately. A useful haptic cue does not prove that the compression is comfortable, and a stimulation feature does not prove that the garment will stay in position during a full day of movement.

Match the garment to the body area and task

Describe the use case in observable terms. “Weak legs” is less useful than “the toe catches during the first few steps after sitting” or “I lose track of knee position when climbing stairs.” The description determines which features should be tested and which professional should be involved.

Walking, balance and foot clearance

For gait-related problems, check whether the garment is intended to cue movement, stimulate muscles, reduce unwanted tone or provide mechanical assistance. A sleeve that only vibrates cannot lift a foot; a compression garment that improves body awareness cannot be assumed to correct foot drop; and an electrical system may require precise sensor and electrode placement.

Test on the surfaces and at the speeds that matter: level flooring, stairs, ramps, turns and getting up from a chair. Observe whether the garment migrates, folds at the ankle or changes the way shoes fit. Have a qualified clinician assess gait if the product claims to alter muscle activation or reduce fall risk.

Spasticity and involuntary muscle activity

When spasticity is the problem, ask whether the system provides sensory input, stimulation, positioning or a combination. Cionic states that its Neural Sleeve 2 uses smart sensors, adaptive algorithms, motor stimulation and sensory stimulation across four leg muscle groups. Its product page says, “Motor stimulation activates muscle movement and sensory stimulation relaxes muscle spasms.” Those are manufacturer descriptions, not a guarantee that the system is suitable for every person with spasticity.

Request the fitting criteria, programming process, clinician involvement and evidence for your diagnosis. A product designed for lower-limb gait may not address upper-limb tone, contracture or pain.

Upper-body movement and dressing

For limited shoulder or arm movement, examine armhole size, sleeve width and seam placement. The ALS Association advises that clothing should not restrict joint motion and that lightweight or stretch-knit fabrics allow greater freedom of movement. A garment that adds sensors or panels around the shoulder must still permit reaching, transfers and wheelchair use.

Hand coordination and independence

If the main barrier is fastening clothing, an electronic garment may be solving the wrong problem. Front-opening shirts, large buttons, elastic waistbands, wide leg openings, easy-access shoes, stretch fabrics and zipper pulls can reduce the number of precise hand movements required. Dressing sticks, buttoners, stocking aids, long-handled shoehorns and elastic laces are examples of low-tech aids listed by the ALS Association.

Evaluate fit, pressure and movement in the real task

Fit is a performance requirement, not a cosmetic preference. The garment should follow the body without creating a pressure point, cutting into a fold of skin or slipping away from the area it is meant to sense or support.

What to inspect during a fitting

  • Pressure distribution: Look for even contact rather than a tight band at one edge. Compare both sides of the body and check pressure over bony areas.
  • Joint freedom: Bend, straighten, reach, sit, stand and turn. The garment must not block the joint motion needed for the task.
  • Seams and edges: Outside seams can reduce rubbing. DMO Sensory describes breathable, washable fabric and outside seams as part of its sensory garments.
  • Slippage and migration: Walk, transfer and repeat the movement for several minutes. Mark or photograph where sensors, electrodes or compression panels move.
  • Heat and moisture: Wear the garment long enough to reveal sweating and heat buildup. Moisture can affect comfort and, for electrode systems, contact.
  • Skin tolerance: Inspect the skin after use and again later. Stop if there is persistent redness, numbness, blistering or pain, and seek professional advice before trying again.
  • Layering: Check whether the garment works under ordinary clothing, with footwear, braces or a wheelchair harness.

A practical movement test

  1. Put the garment on exactly as instructed, including any sensors, electrodes or fasteners.
  2. Perform the primary task for five to ten minutes, then repeat it after a longer period if the seller permits an extended trial.
  3. Try a secondary task that often exposes problems, such as sitting, transfers, stairs or reaching overhead.
  4. Check skin, pressure points, heat, moisture and migration immediately afterward.
  5. Record what changed when the garment was adjusted. A product that only works after constant repositioning is not ready for independent daily use.

Make washing and maintenance part of the buying decision

Electronic garments can lose performance through poor laundering, damaged wiring, degraded electrodes or weakened compression. Ask for the complete care procedure before paying, not after the first wash.

Maintenance question Why it matters What to confirm
How often is washing required? Some compression fabrics depend on regular washing to retain their intended feel. DMO says its sensory garments should be washed every two to three days to keep their compressive effect.
Do electronics detach? Batteries, sensors and control modules may not tolerate water or heat. Identify every removable part, its cleaning method and the correct order for reconnection.
How are batteries charged? Charging time and connector design affect daily reliability. Check charge duration, indicator lights, replacement availability and what happens when the battery is empty.
What contacts the skin? Electrode or sensor contact can change with sweat, hair, lotion and movement. Ask how to clean contact surfaces, replace consumables and verify contact before a session.
What happens after repeated laundering? Compression, stitching, seals and wiring can change over time. Request the expected service life, warranty exclusions and inspection procedure.

Follow the maker’s temperature, detergent and drying instructions exactly. Do not assume that a “washable” garment can be tumble-dried, ironed or washed with its battery attached. Keep a spare charging cable or approved accessory only if the supplier confirms compatibility.

Review evidence and safety for active systems

Powered or stimulating garments deserve a higher evidence standard than ordinary clothing. Ask for the study behind every percentage, the population included, the comparison treatment, the duration and the outcomes measured. A result in a selected clinical group may not apply to a different diagnosis, severity or age.

How to interpret the Neural Sleeve 2 claims

Cionic’s 2026 product page reports that 94% of participants in its cited multi-site fall-risk study demonstrated an improvement in gait while wearing the Neural Sleeve. The page also states that 97% of stroke survivors with motor deficits and 84% of people with multiple sclerosis experience spasticity, and reports a 30% improvement in spasticity over motor stimulation alone in a home trial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These figures are manufacturer-reported claims. Before relying on them, ask for the underlying study, inclusion and exclusion criteria, definition of “improvement,” sample size, follow-up period and adverse-event reporting. Confirm whether the result was measured with the sleeve immediately on, after training, or during ordinary home use.

Questions to ask a clinician or supplier

  • Is this system indicated for my diagnosis and the specific movement problem?
  • Who performs the initial assessment, sizing and calibration?
  • How often must settings be reviewed?
  • Which symptoms require stopping use or contacting a clinician?
  • What skin, implanted-device or medication considerations apply?
  • What happens if the software, sensor or battery fails?
  • Can I return the garment if it cannot be fitted safely or does not meet the stated task?

Do not infer safety from the garment’s appearance. A textile exterior can conceal electrical, thermal or mechanical risks. Use only the charger, electrodes, accessories and software approved for the system.

Compare specialist supply with custom development

Who supplies the garment determines what happens after the sale. DMO Sensory is described as available through DMO clinicians, regional suppliers and direct purchase in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States. Confirm that your location is covered, whether an appointment is required, and how replacements and repairs are handled.

AQ-Tech presents custom development, ergonomic validation and pre-series manufacturing rather than a standard consumer retail item. That model may suit an organization developing a haptic, EMS/TENS, heating, connected-PPE or soft-exoskeleton garment, but it is not the same as buying an off-the-shelf product for personal use. Clarify whether you are purchasing a finished garment, a prototype or a development service.

Support and service checklist

  • Named fitting professional or technical contact
  • Published sizing method and alteration policy
  • Replacement sensors, electrodes, cables, batteries and fasteners
  • Repair turnaround and loaner availability
  • Software updates and phone compatibility
  • Warranty period, exclusions and return window
  • Training for the wearer and caregiver
  • Service coverage in your country or region

Calculate total ownership cost without guessing a sticker price

No independent price, marketplace availability or affiliate figure is established for the specialist garments described here. Instead of comparing an uncertain headline price, list the costs that determine whether the garment is practical:

  • Initial garment, fitting or assessment fee
  • Clinician visits and follow-up calibration
  • Replacement electrodes, liners, batteries or cables
  • Charging equipment and compatible phone or tablet
  • Alterations, repairs and shipping
  • Cleaning supplies and the time required for maintenance
  • Backup clothing or accessories needed while the garment is being washed or repaired

Ask the supplier to put each recurring item in writing. A lower purchase price can become expensive if consumables are proprietary or repairs require international shipping.

Use this buying process

  1. Write a one-sentence task definition. State the movement, body area, environment and desired outcome.
  2. Select the mechanism. Choose passive compression for body-awareness cues, haptics for alerts or guidance, stimulation for a clinically supported program, or mechanical assistance for force support.
  3. Screen out unsuitable designs. Reject garments that restrict the required joint motion, cannot be cleaned safely or lack a clear fitting and support process.
  4. Arrange an in-person or supervised fitting when needed. This is especially important for stimulation, sensors, gait assistance and significant spasticity.
  5. Test the exact task. Include walking surfaces, transfers, work movements, dressing and the clothing layers used every day.
  6. Check skin and comfort over time. Record heat, moisture, pressure, slippage and fatigue rather than relying on a brief first impression.
  7. Verify maintenance. Demonstrate removing electronics, charging, washing, drying and reinstalling every component.
  8. Read the evidence and return terms. Match claims to your diagnosis and confirm what happens if the fit or function is unacceptable.
  9. Plan for failure. Know how to perform the task without the garment and how to obtain repairs, replacement parts or technical help.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The garment feels effective only when newly adjusted. Migration, incorrect size or insufficient anchoring. Have the fit reassessed during the real task; do not compensate by overtightening.
Skin becomes hot, damp or irritated. Fabric, seam, pressure or moisture buildup. Stop and inspect the skin, review the care instructions and ask the supplier about a different size or material.
Vibrations are missed or confusing. Insufficient intensity, signal overload or reduced sensation. Use fewer signal patterns, adjust intensity with guidance or choose a simpler cueing method.
Stimulation varies from session to session. Electrode placement, contact, sweat or calibration changes. Recheck placement and skin preparation; seek supplier or clinician support rather than increasing intensity independently.
The garment is difficult to put on. Small fasteners, limited reach or a complex electronics sequence. Consider front openings, larger fasteners, dressing aids or caregiver-assisted setup.
It cannot be used while charging or during washing. Single-battery or single-garment maintenance cycle. Ask about a spare approved component or plan a non-powered alternative for those periods.
The product works technically but is rarely worn. Heat, weight, setup time, appearance or task mismatch. Prioritize comfort, ease of use and perceived usefulness; these factors affect whether people continue using and purchasing movement-assistive clothing.

When a simpler garment is the better choice

Choose low-tech adaptive clothing when the main obstacle is dressing, fastening or tolerating long wear rather than sensing or activating movement. A front-opening top, stretch fabric, elastic waistband, wide leg opening, easy-access shoe or elastic lace has no battery to charge and no software to maintain. Dressing sticks, buttoners, zipper pulls, stocking aids and long-handled shoehorns can address specific hand-reach limitations at relatively little complexity.

Choose a connected or stimulating garment when its additional function is necessary, the evidence is relevant to your condition, and a qualified person can fit and support it. The best purchase is the one that solves the defined task consistently, survives the required cleaning routine and can be used safely when technology or service is unavailable.
