The right flexible motion-tracking sensor depends first on the quantity you need: local bend angle, stretch, acceleration, angular rate, segment orientation, or a coordinated estimate of several joints. A flexible bend sensor measures deformation directly. An inertial measurement unit (IMU) measures motion and rotation indirectly through accelerometers and gyroscopes. A wearable motion-capture system combines several sensors with attachment hardware, wireless links, calibration, sensor fusion and analysis software. Define that output before comparing products; otherwise, a sensor can appear suitable while measuring the wrong thing.

Start with the measurement, not the word “flexible”

“Flexible” describes how a device conforms to a surface, not what it measures. Ask what data your application must produce and where that data comes from.

Flexible bend sensors

A bend sensor changes its electrical output as it curves. It is suited to a finger, elbow, hinge or other location where the important variable is local bending. Nitto describes one-axis and two-axis versions that measure bending angles along one axis or two orthogonal axes, with applications including joint-angle monitoring, data gloves and robot hands. Its silicone construction is intended to conform to curved moving components. See the manufacturer’s description at Nitto flexSensing.

A bend sensor does not automatically provide absolute body orientation, velocity or a complete skeleton. Its output is normally a calibrated electrical value converted to an angle or deformation value.

Inertial measurement units (IMUs)

An IMU measures inertial quantities rather than bend directly. Bosch’s wearable BMI270, for example, combines a triaxial accelerometer and gyroscope in a six-axis device. Its relevant outputs are acceleration and angular rate; software can use those measurements to estimate segment orientation. Review its ranges, programmable data rates and I2C or SPI interfaces in the Bosch wearable-sensor information.

An IMU mounted above and below a joint can help estimate relative rotation, but placement, calibration, drift and the surrounding magnetic environment affect the result. It is not a direct replacement for a bend element when the only required variable is joint flexion.

Wearable motion-capture systems

A motion-capture product is a complete workflow rather than a single sensing element. It may include several IMUs, attachment fixtures, synchronization, radio, calibration, sensor fusion, drift handling and analysis software. Noraxon describes a configurable Ultium Motion platform supporting one to 16 sensors and analysis tools at Noraxon Ultium Motion. That capability should not be compared directly with the specification of one bend strip.

Approach Best-matched output What to compare
Flexible bend sensor Local bending, finger flexion or a hinge-like joint angle Axis count, usable angle, repeatability, bend life, mounting, wired interface and whether a board or kit is included
Wearable IMU Acceleration, angular rate or estimated orientation of one body segment Accelerometer and gyroscope ranges, data rate, power, data access, calibration, sensor fusion, radio and software
Multi-sensor motion-capture system Coordinated movement across multiple body segments Sensor count, update rate, attachment, synchronization, drift handling, battery, wireless range, export and analysis software

Define the output and movement envelope

Write the required output in one sentence

Examples include “finger flexion angle at 100 samples per second,” “angular velocity of a forearm,” or “three-dimensional orientation of six body segments.” This statement determines whether you need a bend element, an IMU or a multi-sensor system. Xsens’s 2026 guide likewise recommends deciding the study variable before sensor count, sample rate and attachment method; see its movement-research guide.

Count axes and degrees of freedom

One-axis bending is appropriate for a movement that behaves like a single hinge. Two-axis bending can capture curvature in two orthogonal directions, but it still does not measure every rotational degree of freedom. Full-body or compound motion normally requires multiple sensors and a defined coordinate system. List the axes you must resolve before accepting a single-axis product.

Check the physical range

Confirm the maximum bend angle, stretch or inertial range and leave headroom for impact and installation error. A sensor operated at its mechanical stop can produce nonlinear readings or fail early. For an IMU, check selectable accelerometer and gyroscope ranges against the fastest movement and highest shock your subject can produce. A larger range can prevent clipping but may reduce resolution, depending on the device and configuration.

Examine accuracy, sampling and durability claims carefully

Accuracy is conditional

Ask how accuracy was measured, with what fixture, over what angle or temperature range and after how many cycles. A quoted number without those conditions cannot predict performance on a moving body. Repeatability, hysteresis and calibration stability may matter more than a single best-case accuracy figure.

These are manufacturer measurements, not universal guarantees. Treat them as reference points and request the test method, calibration procedure and production specification for the exact part you intend to buy.

Match sample rate to the motion and pipeline

Sampling faster does not automatically improve a result. The rate must capture the movement’s fastest meaningful changes, while the microcontroller, radio, storage and analysis software must be able to process the stream. Check whether the stated rate applies to one channel or all channels, whether filtering changes the effective bandwidth and whether wireless transmission introduces packet loss or latency.

Inspect attachment, comfort and mechanical loading

Mounting is part of the measurement system. A sensor that slips, twists or bridges the wrong joint can report strap motion instead of body motion.

  • Identify the anatomical landmarks or surface features that must align with the sensing axis.
  • Check whether the supplied strap, adhesive, glove, housing or clip keeps the element in place throughout the full movement.
  • Route cables so they do not pull on the sensor or restrict the subject.
  • Confirm that the housing can flex where the body flexes and that repeated bending does not concentrate stress at a connector.
  • Evaluate mass, thickness, skin contact, sweat exposure and cleaning requirements for the intended session length.

Vendor pages establish intended wearable uses, but they do not prove that one mounting method is optimal for every body location. Plan a short attachment trial with the actual clothing, range of motion and cable path.

Verify electrical, wireless and software integration

Identify what is in the box

A listing may describe only a sensing element, a circuit board, an evaluation kit or a complete wearable system. Confirm the exact part number and included accessories. Nitto documents wired acquisition over I2C, wiring examples and Arduino sample code, plus a separate battery-powered BLE evaluation kit that displays and saves data in a web application. Check whether the configuration you are ordering includes the board, battery, cables and software, rather than assuming that the evaluation kit is bundled.

Check interfaces and electrical limits

  • Confirm supply voltage, current draw, logic levels, connector type and I2C address or SPI mode.
  • Verify driver, SDK and operating-system support for your controller or computer.
  • Determine whether timestamps originate in the sensor, host or radio receiver.
  • For wireless systems, check usable range, pairing behavior, packet-loss reporting and local data buffering.
  • For battery operation, calculate runtime at the selected sample rate and radio duty cycle.

Plan calibration and data handling

Ask how a raw reading becomes an angle or orientation: factory calibration, a user zero pose, a multi-position calibration, or software sensor fusion. Establish where calibration constants are stored and how they are reloaded. Confirm export formats, timestamps, channel names and whether data can be accessed without the vendor’s application.

Understand IMU-specific risks

Bias and drift

Gyroscope bias accumulates into orientation error during integration. Temperature changes, vibration and attachment movement can worsen the estimate. A system may reduce drift with software corrections, reference poses or sensor fusion, but those features require a defined calibration routine and may impose assumptions about the motion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Magnetic interference

Magnetometers can provide a heading reference, but ferrous structures, motors, speakers and nearby electronics distort the magnetic field. Test the intended installation rather than assuming a compass heading is reliable. If heading is not required, determine whether the software can operate without magnetometer corrections.

Compare complete workflows, not isolated specifications

Question Bend sensor IMU Motion-capture system
How many sensing elements? Usually one element per measured bend axis or location One unit per segment, depending on the estimate Configurable multi-sensor set; Noraxon describes one to 16 sensors
Primary setup task Align and calibrate the bend-to-angle relationship Place, orient and calibrate each inertial unit Attach, identify, synchronize and calibrate the full network
Typical data path Analog or I2C reading to a host I2C/SPI or wireless stream with fusion software Wireless synchronized data with analysis and export tools
Main failure mode Slippage, hysteresis, overstretch or connector fatigue Drift, magnetic disturbance, clipping or incorrect frame alignment Incorrect calibration, dropped packets, synchronization or attachment errors

The table describes the usual workflow, not a performance ranking. The documented vendor descriptions are not a head-to-head test of accuracy, comfort, setup time or total cost.

A practical buying procedure

  1. Define the variable. Write whether you need bend angle, elongation, acceleration, angular rate, orientation or a multi-segment kinematic estimate.
  2. Map the movement. Record the body location, axes, maximum excursion, speed, impacts, temperature and session duration.
  3. Choose the sensing class. Select a bend sensor for local deformation, an IMU for inertial motion or a coordinated system for several segments.
  4. Shortlist compatible ranges. Reject devices whose angle, stretch, acceleration, gyroscope or temperature range cannot cover the movement with headroom.
  5. Audit the installation. Decide how the device will be secured, where cables or batteries will sit and how the attachment will be cleaned or replaced.
  6. Verify integration. Check voltage, interface, drivers, radio, sample rate, timestamping, storage and software export for the exact package.
  7. Request evidence. Ask for test conditions behind accuracy, durability and temperature numbers, and distinguish actual measurements from guaranteed specifications.
  8. Run a representative trial. Calibrate on the intended subject, perform the full movement repeatedly, inspect saturation and packet loss, and compare the output with an independent reference where the application requires it.

What the documented product examples illustrate

Nitto flexSensing

Nitto’s page illustrates a conformable bend element with one-axis or two-orthogonal-axis measurement, I2C wiring and a separate BLE evaluation kit. Its published figures are useful for framing questions about angle accuracy, cycle life, sampling and temperature, but the company explicitly labels them actual measurements rather than guaranteed specifications. Confirm the exact model, mounting method and included electronics.

Bosch BMI270

The BMI270 illustrates the IMU approach: a wearable-oriented six-axis device with a triaxial accelerometer and gyroscope, selectable measurement ranges, programmable data rates and I2C/SPI connections. It supplies inertial measurements; an application still needs appropriate placement, calibration and software if it is to output orientation or joint kinematics.

Noraxon Ultium Motion

Noraxon’s description illustrates a system-level purchase. The platform is configurable from one to 16 sensors and includes analysis functions such as drift stabilization and calibration. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent proof that the system is the best choice for a particular study.

Shimmer3 IMU

Shimmer describes a wearable unit combining accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and altimeter data with orientation estimation and attachment features. This example shows why you should inspect the complete sensor stack and software workflow rather than selecting solely by the word “IMU.” Confirm current datasheets, compatibility and availability before ordering.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing by flexibility alone: ask what bends, which quantity is measured and what output your software receives.
  • Using a bend strip for orientation: add IMUs or another appropriate reference when segment orientation or multi-axis rotation is required.
  • Comparing unlike numbers: do not compare a bend-angle figure with an IMU orientation estimate or treat sample rate as a universal quality score.
  • Ignoring mounting: validate alignment, slippage, cable pull and comfort during the real movement.
  • Assuming the evaluation kit is included: verify the bill of materials, battery, board, cables and software license.
  • Accepting unqualified accuracy claims: obtain test conditions and distinguish measured results from guaranteed specifications.
  • Forgetting the rest of the workflow: include sensor count, communications, power, calibration, synchronization, storage, export and analysis effort in the comparison.

Final decision checklist

  • The required output and axes are written down.
  • The sensor’s mechanical or inertial range covers the movement with headroom.
  • Sample rate, latency and bandwidth fit the analysis pipeline.
  • Attachment keeps the sensing axis aligned without restricting or distorting motion.
  • Voltage, interface, radio, battery and software are compatible with the host system.
  • Calibration, drift handling, magnetic sensitivity and coordinate frames are understood.
  • The quoted accuracy and durability figures include their test conditions and qualifications.
  • The comparison includes the complete workflow, not only the price or specification of one sensor.

The safest purchase is therefore the one that measures the required variable with a documented range, a repeatable attachment and an integration path you can test. Select a bend sensor when local deformation is the target; select an IMU when inertial motion or orientation is the target; select a multi-sensor platform when you need synchronized movement across several segments.
