The right CRT is the one that accepts the exact signals your consoles produce and shows a stable, well-aligned picture. Check the specific model’s inputs and 240p behavior, test the actual set for geometry, focus, color and convergence, and verify that it can be moved and installed safely. A famous model or better connector cannot make up for a worn or badly adjusted tube.

Start with the consoles, not the television

Before looking at listings, make an inventory of every console you expect to connect. Record the console model, the cable or adapter you already have, and the video signal it outputs. This prevents the most common buying mistake: choosing a television because it has a familiar-looking socket, then discovering that it does not correctly handle the console’s video mode.

Check the exact television model number against its manual or model-specific documentation. Two sets that look almost identical can have different inputs or different signal handling. The presence of a connector does not guarantee that every retro mode will display correctly. Community buying guidance specifically warns that 240p handling can vary between televisions, so confirm the behavior of the exact set rather than relying on a label or brand reputation (NOSTOS, March 2026; Vintage and Retro inspection checklist; RetroTechLab signal-compatibility guide).

Make a compatibility list

  • Console: write down each system you will use, including revisions and regional variants.
  • Output: identify whether the console or its adapter provides composite, S-Video, component, RGB or another signal.
  • Required mode: note whether the system uses 240p or another mode that must be accepted by the display.
  • Connection path: include every adapter, switch, scaler or converter between the console and television.
  • Documentation: save the candidate TV’s manual or specification page before you travel to collect it.

If any part of this chain is uncertain, treat the set as unverified until you can test it. An adapter may change the connector without changing the underlying signal, and a socket with a similar name may expect a different format.

Understand what each input actually carries

Inputs are not interchangeable simply because they are all analog video connections. Sony’s technical explanation distinguishes S-Video, component and RGB by the way they carry picture information: S-Video keeps luminance (brightness and black-and-white detail) separate from color information; component carries luminance on Y and color-difference signals on Pb and Pr; and RGB terminals used on some computers and monitors are a different configuration from component video (Sony USA Support).

Connection or label What to verify Typical buying implication
S-Video Confirm that the console or adapter outputs S-Video and that the TV has a compatible S-Video input. Use it only when both ends support the same S-Video connection; do not infer compatibility from a cable’s appearance.
Component (Y/Pb/Pr) Check for the three component video inputs and confirm that the console’s output matches the TV’s accepted modes. Component’s Y, Pb and Pr signals are not RGB. A component cable is not an RGB cable.
RGB Confirm that the television explicitly accepts the RGB format and connector used by the console or adapter. Do not plug RGB into component inputs on the assumption that both are “better” analog video.
Other inputs Read the model documentation and identify the signal standard, not just the socket shape or color. A port is useful only if it accepts the signal your console actually sends.

Connector colors are guides, not proof. Before buying a cable, compare the console output, the cable wiring and the television’s input specification. This is especially important when a setup uses an adapter: the adapter may provide a different connector while still carrying the original signal type.

Pay special attention to 240p

Many retro consoles produce 240p for game graphics. A television may have an input that appears suitable yet handle that mode incorrectly or inconsistently. The exact behavior is model-dependent, so do not assume that a CRT will automatically display every 240p source just because it is an older television. Verify the candidate model’s documented modes and, when possible, test it with the console you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to verify a candidate

  1. Find the complete model number on the rear label or front-panel documentation.
  2. Locate the manual or a model-specific specification sheet.
  3. Look for the accepted signal formats and resolutions for each input.
  4. Search the documentation for 240p or the console’s relevant mode, rather than relying on a generic “supports retro consoles” description.
  5. Connect the actual console and observe gameplay, menus and scrolling, not just a static input screen.

If the seller cannot identify the model or will not allow a signal test, record that uncertainty in your comparison. It should lower your confidence even if the asking price is attractive.

Inspect the actual picture before paying

The individual unit matters more than a model’s reputation. A well-regarded CRT that has been stored poorly can have a worse picture than an ordinary model in excellent condition. If possible, bring the console, the correct cable and a game or test pattern you know well. Inspect the set after it has produced a picture and check several areas of the screen, not only the center.

1. Stability

Look for a picture that rolls, flickers abnormally, loses sync or cuts out when the cable is touched. Change inputs and display scenes to see whether the problem follows one input or affects the entire set. A stable image should remain locked during gameplay and scrolling. If the seller demonstrates only a static menu, ask to see moving content.

2. Geometry

Geometry describes the placement and shape of the image. Straight lines in a grid, menu or game should not be excessively tilted, bowed or uneven. Check all four corners and the screen edges; a set can look acceptable in the center while bending lines near the border. Note whether the defect is minor and tolerable for your use or severe enough to reject the unit. Do not assume a menu adjustment will correct every physical or aging-related problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Focus and detail

Examine small text, HUD elements and fine pixel edges. The picture should remain legible across the screen rather than becoming noticeably soft in one area. Compare the center with the corners. Poor focus can make a high-quality source look blurred, so test with the console and cable you will actually use.

4. Color

Check large areas of white, gray, black and primary colors. Look for a persistent color cast, uneven brightness or patches that differ from the rest of the screen. Switch between light and dark scenes; some problems are easier to see in one than the other. Record the condition of the picture at the time of sale instead of assuming that a later adjustment will restore it.

5. Convergence

Convergence is the alignment of the red, green and blue images that form the picture. A convergence problem appears as colored edges or colored shadows around white text and straight lines. Inspect the center and corners, because alignment can vary across the tube. Minor errors may be acceptable for a casual setup; obvious colored separation across much of the screen is a strong reason to choose another unit.

6. Controls and inputs

Operate the remote or front-panel controls, switch through every input you plan to use and confirm that the picture returns reliably. Test the audio output if sound is part of your setup. Check the input sockets for looseness and see whether moving a plug causes the image to drop out. These observations are about the actual television in front of you, not a specification for the model family.

Vintage and Retro’s inspection guidance likewise emphasizes viewing the live picture for stability, geometry, focus, color and convergence (inspection checklist). A test pattern can make faults easier to see, but ordinary game scenes are essential because they reveal problems that a static pattern may hide.

Choose a size you can actually install

A larger screen can suit a bigger room or a longer viewing distance, but CRTs are bulky and heavy. Treat transport as part of the purchase decision, not as an afterthought.

Measure before arranging pickup

  • Measure the television’s width, height and depth from the exact model documentation or the seller’s set.
  • Measure doors, stairways, hallways, vehicle openings and the final stand location.
  • Confirm the route has no sharp turns or steps that make carrying unsafe.
  • Check the stand’s load capacity and dimensions; do not assume a generic shelf can support the set.
  • Plan enough clearance for ventilation and for reaching the inputs without bending cables sharply.

Do not generalize a single commonly quoted CRT size or weight to every television. Buying guides often use examples, but the exact model’s dimensions and weight control whether it will fit your room and route (NOSTOS, March 2026). Arrange appropriate help for lifting and keep the set upright and secure during transport.

Match cables to both ends of the connection

Buy the cable only after identifying the output on the console and the input on the television. For S-Video, both the console or its adapter and the CRT must have compatible S-Video connections. Sony describes S-Video as a legacy connection that separates luminance from color information, but that description does not make an S-Video plug compatible with component or RGB (Sony USA Support).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cable-check procedure

  1. Read the console or adapter documentation and write down the output type.
  2. Read the CRT manual and identify the exact input type and accepted modes.
  3. Compare the connector count and wiring required at both ends.
  4. Verify that any switch, converter or scaler in the chain preserves the signal format.
  5. Test the complete chain before buying additional accessories.

Do not select a cable because its plugs have similar colors or because the product title mentions “HD,” “RGB” or “component” broadly. RGB and component are different configurations, and the wrong cable can produce no picture, incorrect colors or an unstable image. A compatible S-Video cable is a sensible purchase only when the console and CRT both support S-Video; no particular cable model, price or current stock is established here.

Compare two CRT candidates systematically

When two sets are available, compare them on the criteria below rather than deciding from the logo or cabinet style. Use “not verified” when you have not tested an item; uncertainty is more useful than a guessed score.

Criterion Questions to answer Evidence to record
Console and signal compatibility Does it accept every console output and the required 240p mode? Exact input specification, model documentation and a live test.
Picture condition Is the image stable, focused, correctly colored and acceptably aligned? Observations from gameplay and, if available, a test pattern.
Geometry and convergence Are lines straight enough for your tolerance, with no distracting color separation? Center and corner checks, written notes or photographs for later comparison.
Practical fit Can the set be moved safely and placed on a suitable stand? Dimensions, weight, route measurements and stand capacity.
Cost and uncertainty Is the asking price reasonable for the condition you can verify? Local listing details, test results and repair risk.

There is no universal used-market price in the available evidence: value depends on location, listing and verified condition. Compare the complete situation—working inputs, picture quality, transport and any likely repair—rather than a number detached from those facts.

A practical buying workflow

Before contacting a seller

  • List the consoles and their output signals.
  • Set a minimum acceptable input and picture condition.
  • Find the candidate’s exact model number and manual.
  • Measure your room, stand and transport route.
  • Prepare the console, cable and game or test pattern you will use for inspection.

During the inspection

  1. Confirm that the television powers on and that the controls and remote respond.
  2. Connect the console using the verified cable and select the correct input.
  3. View moving gameplay, menus and scrolling.
  4. Check stability, then inspect geometry and convergence with straight lines or a test pattern.
  5. Check focus and color in both bright and dark scenes.
  6. Switch through every input you intend to use and gently check for loose sockets.
  7. Record faults immediately and decide whether they exceed your tolerance.

Before handing over payment

  • Reconfirm the model number and included accessories.
  • Agree on what has actually been tested; do not treat an untested input as working.
  • Ensure the set can be secured for transport and that the destination stand is ready.
  • Keep the seller’s description and your notes so an undisclosed fault is not confused with normal CRT limitations.

Red flags that should change your decision

  • The seller cannot identify the exact model or provide any documentation.
  • You are told that “all CRTs handle 240p” without a model-specific test.
  • The only demonstration is a blank input screen or static menu.
  • Colored edges, severe bowing, a tilted image or unstable sync are visible during gameplay.
  • The required input is present physically but its signal format is not documented.
  • The set’s dimensions or weight do not fit your route, vehicle or stand.
  • The asking price assumes a reputation while the individual unit has not been inspected.

A defect that is visible before purchase is a decision point, not a puzzle you must accept. You can negotiate only if you understand the risk and have access to qualified repair help; otherwise, select a unit whose condition you can verify.

What to do when the picture is wrong after purchase

No picture or wrong colors

Turn the system and CRT off, then recheck that the cable type matches the console output and the selected TV input. Confirm that an RGB cable has not been connected to component inputs, and that an S-Video setup has S-Video compatibility at both ends. Test a known-good cable or input if available. If the signal format is correct but the set still fails, consult the model documentation rather than changing random settings.

Unstable or rolling image

Verify that the console is producing a mode the TV accepts and that every adapter in the chain supports it. Repeat the test with the shortest known-good connection path. If instability remains across inputs and sources, treat it as a television fault and stop using the set until it can be assessed safely.

Geometry, focus or convergence problem

Recheck the same scene at the center and edges to establish whether the issue is consistent. If it was present during the pre-purchase inspection, it is part of the unit’s condition. If it appeared suddenly, document the change and seek a qualified CRT technician; do not open the cabinet yourself, because CRTs contain hazardous high-voltage components even when unplugged.

The decision in one sentence

Buy the CRT you can verify: the exact model must accept your consoles’ signals—including 240p where required—and the individual set must show a stable, acceptably focused, correctly colored and well-aligned picture that fits your room, stand and transport plan. Inputs, cables and reputation are secondary to that evidence.
