When buying a business firewall, compare how well each option fits your network, handles the security controls you need, and can be patched and supported for the period you plan to use it. Evaluate the whole operating commitment—not just the appliance or its advertised throughput—including subscriptions, management effort, deployment, and lifecycle dates.
Start with the network and the job the firewall must do
There is no universal best business firewall. The right choice depends on where it will sit in your network, the traffic it must handle, which protections you intend to enable, how it will be managed, and the skills available to operate it. NIST’s foundational firewall guidance treats selection as part of a wider process that includes policy, configuration, testing, deployment, and ongoing management—not simply buying a device.
Before requesting quotes, document the network locations and connections the firewall must serve, the policies it must enforce, and the security functions administrators expect to use. Ask vendors to explain how their proposed configuration addresses those requirements, including any dependencies on separate software, subscriptions, or management systems.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Evaluate security features against real requirements
Feature lists are useful only when they map to controls your organization needs and can configure. For every required capability, establish whether it is included in the quoted product, requires a subscription, or depends on another component. Also identify who will maintain the policies and review changes.
#1 Best Overall

- Robust Connectivity Options: Equipped with 5 GE RJ45 ports, including 1 WAN port and 4 internal ports, this model provides essential connectivity and flexibility for various network configurations in a small-scale environment.
- High-Performance Security: Offers up to 1 Gbps IPS throughput and 600 Mbps threat protection throughput, using Fortinet’s purpose-built security processor technology to deliver industry-leading performance and protection for SSL encrypted traffic.
- Advanced Threat Protection: Integrated with Fortinet’s AI-powered FortiGuard Labs, the FortiGate 40F offers comprehensive cybersecurity, identifying and mitigating both known and unknown threats to maintain robust security across your network.
- Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.
- Policy flexibility: Can administrators express the access rules and segmentation the network requires?
- Enabled protections: Which security functions will be active in production, and what configuration do they require?
- Manageability: What tools, expertise, training, and recurring administration will be needed?
- Performance in context: Ask for performance information for the intended configuration with the expected protections enabled. Treat headline throughput as a claim to validate, not a guarantee of performance under your policies and traffic.
No current independent comparative performance test is established here, so use consistent requirements and seek evidence for the exact proposed configuration rather than relying on vendor rankings or an unqualified throughput number.
Ask how patching works in practice
NIST defines enterprise patch management as “the process of identifying, prioritizing, acquiring, installing, and verifying the installation of patches, updates, and upgrades throughout an organization.” Its SP 800-40 Revision 4, published April 6, 2022, describes patching as preventive maintenance and a cost of doing business. For a firewall, the buying question is whether the vendor and your team can carry out this process reliably.

- BUSINESS READY - pfSense+ software updates included for product lifetime. Netgate TAC Lite technical support included. One year hardware warranty included.
- COMPLETE - Pre-loaded with pfSense+ software to get up and running fast. Simply unbox it and start customizing for your secure edge networking needs. Free help with setup from our expert Technical Assistance Center (TAC) available 24/7/365.
- POWERFUL - A dual core ARM Cortex-A53 1.2 GHz delivers near gigabit routing of common home iPerf3 traffic and in excess of 650 Mbps of firewall throughput.
- COMPACT - Low power draw, a compact form factor, and silent operation allow it to run unnoticed when placed on a desktop, wall, or rack.
- FLEXIBLE - Three (3) 1 GbE switched (WAN/LAN/OPT) ports allow you to configure three separate 1 GbE switched ports for upto a gigabit of bi-directional traffic.
Ask each vendor and, where relevant, the service provider:
- Which security and firmware updates are included, how are they delivered, and how can an administrator verify installation?
- How are critical vulnerabilities prioritized, and what emergency fix process is available?
- Can updates be tested or staged before broad deployment? What documented rollback or recovery steps exist?
- If immediate installation is impractical, what mitigation is available and how is it communicated?
Prompt patching can reduce exposure, but updates can also disrupt network availability. NIST’s SP 1800-31 executive summary notes that delaying deployment gives attackers a larger window of opportunity. Balance that risk with a plan for testing, staged rollout, recovery, and urgent fixes; a policy that says “patch quickly” is not enough without a workable operating process.

Check support entitlements and product lifespan
Support depends on the exact product, software release, and contract. Ask for the model’s end-of-sale, end-of-maintenance, and end-of-support dates, and confirm which software branches remain supported. Then get the support terms in writing: available channels, severity-based response commitments, replacement coverage, renewal requirements, and any services that require a separate entitlement.
Lifecycle labels and contract terms vary by vendor. For example, Palo Alto Networks’ lifecycle policy is an example of one vendor’s published approach, not a rule for other manufacturers. Confirm the current dates for the exact model and release you are considering, along with any geography- or contract-specific terms, before purchase.

Make the decision fit your operating capacity
A firewall is a continuing security and operations responsibility. A product with the right controls may still be a poor fit if the organization cannot manage its policies, verify updates, maintain support, or respond to urgent vulnerabilities. Include the people and processes needed to run the proposed system in the decision, whether those responsibilities sit with internal staff or a contracted provider.
Choose the proposal that meets your documented network and security needs, provides credible performance evidence for the intended configuration, offers support and lifecycle runway suited to your planned ownership period, and can be operated within your organization’s capacity.
