For a PS5 TV, verify the exact model’s 4K/120 Hz support and which HDMI ports provide it, then compare Game Mode input lag, VRR, ALLM, and model-specific HDR performance. A feature label such as “HDMI 2.1” or “HDR” alone does not confirm how well a particular TV handles every gaming feature. PS5 supports 4K/120 Hz, HDR, VRR, and ALLM with compatible equipment, but the TV, HDMI connection, settings, and game all affect what you can use.
Start with the PS5 signal you want to use
Choose a TV based on the output you expect to play at, not just its marketing labels. PlayStation Support says the PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K at 120 Hz. That capability only helps when the specific TV model and HDMI input accept the signal, and the game and console are set to a compatible mode. PlayStation Support’s PS5 resolution guide covers the console’s output settings and connection troubleshooting.
Sony recommends connecting the PS5 to the TV’s HDMI 2.1 port when one is available. Port capabilities can differ on the same TV, so check the exact model’s manual or specifications rather than assuming all HDMI inputs support 4K/120 Hz. If you plan to connect through a receiver or another device, verify that the whole connection path supports the signal as well.
What to check on the TV
- Whether the exact model and screen size support 4K/120 Hz input.
- Which HDMI ports accept that signal, and whether any port must be enabled in the TV settings.
- How many suitable ports remain if you also connect a receiver, soundbar, or another HDMI device.
Is a 120 Hz TV necessary for PS5?
No. A 120 Hz TV matters if you want to use games and console settings that support 120 Hz output. It does not make every PS5 game run at 120 frames per second: the title and its selected graphics or performance mode determine what frame rate is available. Sony’s PS5 settings guidance explains enabling 120 Hz output for compatible TVs and games.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Confirm the TV’s native refresh specification and the HDMI input’s supported signal. Then check the PS5 video-output settings and the individual game’s options. A TV advertised with a high refresh rate may not accept every desired console signal through every port.
How to judge HDR performance
PS5 supports HDR, but the word “HDR” does not tell you how bright or convincing HDR will look on a particular TV. Two TVs that accept HDR can produce noticeably different results. Compare measurements and reviews for the exact model, considering room brightness, contrast, highlight handling, and price rather than relying on a universal brightness cutoff.

RTINGS’ PS5 TV comparison is one model-specific comparison resource; rankings and product availability can change. Use measured performance for the TV you are considering, not a result or label that applies only to a product family or a different screen size.

Input lag is the delay between a display receiving a signal and showing the image. It is different from pixel response time. RTINGS’ input-lag methodology measures until pixels begin changing color, so it does not include the rest of the pixel response. The methodology also notes that demanding processing, such as motion interpolation, can add input lag.

For a meaningful comparison, look for measured Game Mode input lag at the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use—particularly 4K/60 Hz or 4K/120 Hz if those are your target modes. Results from different settings or test methods are not directly interchangeable, so a single number without its mode and method is not a reliable pass/fail verdict.
Check VRR and ALLM separately
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
VRR synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh rate with the PS5’s graphical output and can reduce visual artifacts such as tearing. Sony says the result varies by TV and game. Check the exact TV’s VRR support and behavior in the resolution and refresh-rate modes you plan to use. Sony summarizes the console’s display features on its PS5 features page.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
ALLM lets a compatible TV switch to its low-latency mode while gaming. HDMI 2.1 by itself does not guarantee ALLM, so confirm support in the exact model’s manual or specification sheet. Sony also notes that the PS5 does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running, and that VRR behavior is tied to ALLM settings. The PS5 resolution guide describes these settings and compatibility details.
Do you need a new HDMI cable?
Usually not. Sony recommends using the HDMI cable packaged with the PS5. If you need a replacement or a longer cable, Sony names an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable as an alternative in its PS5 FAQ. A separate cable is a conditional purchase, not a routine requirement.

If the expected resolution or refresh rate is unavailable, connect the console directly to the suitable TV port while troubleshooting. Check the TV’s firmware and settings, the HDMI port and connection path, the cable, and the PS5 video-output settings, as outlined in Sony’s troubleshooting guidance.
Use this checklist to compare TVs
- Verified 4K/120 Hz input support on the exact model and size, including the HDMI ports that provide it.
- Game Mode input-lag measurements at the resolution and refresh rate you expect to use.
- VRR compatibility and behavior in your intended gaming modes.
- ALLM support confirmed for the exact model, not inferred from HDMI 2.1.
- HDR performance supported by model-specific measurements and reviews, weighed against your room and budget.
- Enough suitable HDMI ports for the PS5 and any other devices in your setup.
Do not treat “HDMI 2.1,” “120 Hz,” or “HDR” as a complete compatibility check. Verify the specific input, settings, and feature behavior you need before choosing.
