The best space survival sandbox multiplayer game depends on the kind of shared experience your group wants. Start by deciding whether survival pressure, engineering and construction, exploration, or persistent online play matters most. Then verify the game’s actual rules for resource gathering, hazards, ship and base construction, server persistence, player limits, PvE/PvP, mods, and crossplay. “Multiplayer” may mean anything from a social hub to a jointly hosted world or a persistent dedicated server, so the label alone is not enough.
Start with the four systems that define the experience
A useful comparison looks beyond screenshots and genre labels. Evaluate each candidate against four systems: the survival loop, construction and engineering, exploration and progression, and the way multiplayer worlds are hosted and governed.
1. Survival loop and difficulty
Survival can be the central activity or merely a setting that adds occasional inconvenience. Check exactly what your characters must manage:

- Environmental threats: Do temperature, radiation, pressure, gravity, weather, hostile creatures, or orbital hazards create meaningful decisions?
- Failure consequences: Does death remove equipment, reset a body, damage a vehicle, or simply return you to a safe point?
- Difficulty controls: Can the host change inventory capacity, resource abundance, enemy behavior, environmental damage, or respawn rules?
- Automation: Can machines, farms, refineries, and logistics reduce routine work, or must players repeat every gathering task?
A May 30, 2025 preview of a Space Engineers update described configurable environmental hazards, food management, and farming. Those details describe the preview’s planned feature set; check the current changelog and world settings before assuming they are unchanged in the live game.

2. Construction and engineering
Ask whether building is decorative, functional, or both. A construction-focused game lets players design a base around power, production, storage, defenses, transportation, and repair rather than placing isolated cosmetic rooms.
Space Engineers’ official description calls it “a sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets.” Its official feature material emphasizes a realistic, volumetric-based physics engine in which creations can be assembled, disassembled, damaged, and destroyed. That supports a physically interactive building model, but it is not a quantified claim about simulation accuracy.
Compare the following practical details:
- Are ships assembled from individual functional blocks or selected from complete blueprints?
- Do mass, thrust, fuel, power, atmosphere, and structural damage affect whether a design works?
- Can a base be expanded without rebuilding its core systems?
- Can other players damage, salvage, capture, or dismantle structures?
- Are blueprints, copy-and-paste tools, creative testing worlds, or building permissions available?
No Man’s Sky takes a different approach. Hello Games’ 2018 NEXT update described a full multiplayer experience and near-unlimited base building alongside crafting resources and technology upgrades. That update is evidence of the game’s broad exploration-and-building direction, not a complete inventory of every current mode or feature.

3. Exploration and progression
Exploration should lead to a useful choice, not just a larger map. Determine what you gain by leaving your starting area:

- New ores or materials needed for higher-tier machinery
- Technology upgrades that expand mobility, scanning, weapons, or survival capacity
- New planets, stations, ruins, missions, or environmental conditions
- Blueprints, discoveries, or locations that support player-created goals
- Strategic sites worth defending or connecting to your logistics network
No Man’s Sky’s official pages explicitly connect exploration with resource crafting and technology upgrades. Space Engineers presents exploration as one part of an engineering-survival sandbox, where the value of a destination depends heavily on the scenario and the systems your group chooses to build.
4. Multiplayer structure
Before buying, identify the exact multiplayer format your group needs:
- Session-based co-op: One player starts a world and others join while that session is available.
- Host-and-play: Progress may depend on the host being online, and the host’s connection becomes part of the experience.
- Dedicated server: A separate process keeps the world available and can provide administration, backups, and persistent progression.
- Social hub: Many players may meet in a shared area without sharing one continuous survival world.
- Competitive instances: PvE, team PvP, or free-flight modes may have separate rules and progression.
Space Engineers lists single-player, multiplayer, and dedicated-server play among its official features. No Man’s Sky’s homepage states that up to 32 players can be present when summoning the Space Anomaly social hub. The 32-player figure applies specifically to that social-hub feature and should not be treated as a limit for every activity or session.

How the main examples differ
| Game or mode | What it demonstrates | Multiplayer evidence | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Space Engineers | Engineering-led construction, exploration, and survival in space and on planets; player creations can be assembled, disassembled, damaged, and destroyed. | Official features list multiplayer and dedicated-server play. | World settings, hazards, and survival depth depend on the selected scenario and current version. |
| No Man’s Sky | Exploration, crafting resources, technology upgrades, and near-unlimited base building. | Up to 32 players are stated for the Space Anomaly social hub. | The cited building and multiplayer descriptions come from the 2018 NEXT update and current homepage wording; they do not define every present-day mode. |
| Star Citizen: Arena Commander | Separate multiplayer examples: team PvP, PvE, and free-flight exploration. | Free Flight is documented for up to 16 players. | This is a specific mode, not proof of a persistent survival-crafting sandbox. |
Use a buying checklist instead of a genre label
Run this checklist against the official store page, manual, server documentation, and current patch notes. If a feature is important to your group, require an explicit answer rather than inferring it from a trailer.
- Define your group’s ideal evening. Decide whether you want to mine and manufacture, design vehicles, build a permanent settlement, explore unusual worlds, fight other players, or relax in a low-pressure shared world.
- Choose the survival intensity. Confirm whether food, farming, oxygen, environmental damage, and equipment loss are mandatory, optional, or absent. Look for host sliders and difficulty presets.
- Inspect construction dependencies. Check whether ships and bases require gathered materials, power networks, fuel, life support, production chains, and repairs.
- Verify persistence. Ask who can start the world, whether progress remains when that person is offline, how backups work, and whether a dedicated server is supported.
- Check the real player limit. Separate limits for a social hub, a co-op world, a dedicated server, and an individual activity. A headline number may apply to only one of these.
- Set the conflict rules. Find out whether PvP is global, opt-in, restricted to zones, or disabled by server settings. Confirm whether friendly fire and block ownership can be changed.
- Confirm platform compatibility. Verify the exact console and PC editions, crossplay support, input compatibility, and whether updates arrive at the same time. A current cross-platform matrix was not established in the available material, so check the official platform pages before purchase.
- Review community administration. Look for bans, permissions, logs, server-side mods, backups, and recovery tools. The official Space Engineers wiki documents server-side mods that may run on crossplay dedicated servers; compatibility still needs to be checked for the particular version and platform combination.
- Estimate recurring work. A persistent world may require someone to monitor storage, power, defenses, farming, and repairs. Decide whether that routine is part of the fun or a burden.
Match features to the kind of group you have
| Your priority | Features to favor | Questions that expose a mismatch |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering and vehicle design | Block-level construction, physical damage, power and propulsion systems, blueprints, creative testing. | Can a badly balanced ship fail? Can an attack disable individual systems? Are decorative bases the main building option? |
| Relaxed exploration with friends | Flexible travel, straightforward crafting, technology upgrades, forgiving death and resource settings. | Can late joiners catch up? Is the group forced into combat or a long production grind? |
| Long-term shared settlement | Persistent saves, dedicated servers, permissions, backups, storage and automation. | Does the world continue when the host is away? Can griefing be reversed? |
| Competitive conflict | Explicit PvP rules, faction tools, readable damage systems, moderation, and reliable server administration. | Can one player destroy months of work without consent? Are PvE and PvP clearly separated? |
| Large social gatherings | Public hubs, defined activity limits, stable matchmaking, and clear instance boundaries. | Does the advertised player count apply only to a hub rather than the survival world? |
Common traps and how to avoid them
Confusing a social hub with a shared survival world
A high player number can describe a meeting area rather than a world in which everyone mines, builds, stores resources, and shares persistent progress. Treat the Space Anomaly’s “up to 32 player” statement as a social-hub capacity, then verify the separate limits and rules for the activity your group actually wants.
Assuming “base building” means engineering
Near-unlimited placement can still mean primarily architectural construction. If your group wants spacecraft that must generate thrust, power, storage, and life support, look for block functions, mass or damage behavior, and production chains rather than a count of placeable structures.
Buying on a planned feature
Preview articles can describe a future update rather than the released game. The May 30, 2025 Space Engineers preview is useful evidence of intended hazards, food, and farming systems, but the current changelog is the authority for what is available now.

Ignoring the host’s workload
Host-based co-op can be inexpensive and simple, but it may stop when the host leaves and can make that person responsible for backups and settings. A dedicated server improves availability but adds administration, moderation, and potentially recurring hosting costs.
Overlooking destruction and recovery
In a game where structures can be damaged or destroyed, ask how quickly a group can recover. Check for blueprints, automatic backups, protected areas, ownership controls, rollback tools, and safe respawn locations before allowing unrestricted PvP.

Do not infer a purchase price, system requirement, or crossplay promise from a feature article. The available evidence does not establish current prices, PC requirements, a complete platform matrix, edition stock, or a named dedicated-server provider. For a hosted world, compare current game support, region, maximum capacity, mod support, uptime terms, backup options, administration tools, and total monthly price. A provider’s compatibility with another game does not prove support for the one your group chooses.
A practical test session before committing
If a trial, demo, family share, or refund window is available on your platform, use the first session to test the systems that determine whether the game will last beyond its novelty.
- Create or join the smallest permitted multiplayer world.
- Gather the first critical resources and record how long it takes to produce tools, shelter, power, and transport.
- Build one functional item, such as a power system, vehicle, refinery, or defended room, rather than only a decorative structure.
- Disconnect the host and have another player reconnect. Note whether progress persists and whether permissions remain correct.
- Test death, recovery, storage ownership, and damage rules in a safe area.
- Attempt a second play session on a different platform if crossplay is required.
- Read the current patch notes for any survival, server, or player-limit changes that could affect your plan.
Final decision framework
Choose an engineering-first sandbox when your group wants to design machines, manage physical systems, and accept the possibility that a damaged creation must be repaired or rebuilt. Choose an exploration-and-building-focused game when the appeal is discovering varied locations, gathering resources, upgrading technology, and establishing bases without making every structure an engineering project. Treat an instanced multiplayer mode as a separate purchase decision when you mainly want short PvE, PvP, or free-flight sessions rather than a persistent survival world.
