The best smartwatch for Strava strength training is not simply the one with the highest GPS rating. Choose a watch that can record a structured lifting session, capture dependable heart-rate data, survive your charging routine, and transfer the activity to Strava without manual work. Before buying, verify five things: the Strava connection method, the depth of the strength profile, heart-rate options, battery and charging behavior, and compatibility with your phone.
Strava can display an imported workout, but it cannot make a basic timer understand your exercises, sets, reps, weight, or rest periods after the fact. Those details must be recorded by the watch or a connected training app. That distinction is the key to choosing equipment for lifting rather than for running with a few strength sessions mixed in.
Start with the Strava connection
Most current GPS watches connect to Strava through their companion app. After you authorize the connection, a completed activity is uploaded to the manufacturer’s service and then sent to Strava. Strava lists Garmin, Apple Watch, COROS, Polar, Suunto and Wahoo among common connected-watch examples. Its device directory also lists Amazfit, Samsung Galaxy Watch and WHOOP integrations.

A watch may have a Strava app, may send workouts through a phone companion app, or may require exporting a file. Strava accepts manual GPX, TCX and FIT uploads when direct synchronization is unavailable. Manual export is a useful fallback, but it adds an extra step and may not carry every strength field into Strava.

Check operating-system support
Confirm that the watch works with your phone’s current operating system and that the companion app is still maintained. Strava says it no longer supports Tizen OS smartwatches after Samsung discontinued its Tizen app. Older Samsung watches therefore need an operating-system check before purchase; compatibility cannot be inferred from the presence of a Strava app in an old review.
Understand what Strava will show
A synchronized activity normally includes duration, time and, when recorded, heart-rate charts and heart-rate zones. Strength-specific information may remain richer in the watch maker’s app or a dedicated training app than in the Strava activity feed. Treat Strava as the place for your shared activity history, while checking the watch ecosystem for exercise-by-exercise logs and progression tools.
Prioritize a real strength mode
Look for a dedicated strength, weight training or gym profile rather than an “other” workout mode. A generic profile can record elapsed time and heart rate, but it usually cannot guide or remember the work you performed.
Minimum fields worth recording
- Exercise name or exercise category.
- Number of sets and repetitions.
- Load, including body-weight, dumbbell, barbell or machine weight where relevant.
- Rest interval or a rest timer.
- Workout history that can be reviewed after the session.
- Editing tools for correcting a missed rep, wrong exercise or incorrect load.
These fields matter because two 45-minute activities can represent completely different training. Without them, a Strava upload is an activity-duration record, not a useful strength log.

Example: COROS strength workflow
COROS documents a Strength mode covering body-weight, dumbbell, barbell, circuit and other workouts. In its app, you can design a session by classifying the exercise and specifying sets, reps and weight. Planned workouts show a muscle heatmap, the watch can issue rest alerts, and rep counting uses arm or wrist movement.
This is a strong example of the depth to seek in any candidate. It does not prove that every COROS model has identical hardware or that movement-based rep detection is perfect for every exercise. Check the exact model’s sensors, controls and supported workout features before buying.
Compare watches on the features that affect lifting
| Decision area | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Strava path | Direct watch app, companion-app synchronization, or GPX/TCX/FIT export | Fewer handoffs mean fewer missed uploads. Manual files are a fallback, not the most convenient routine. |
| Strength depth | Timer only versus exercises, sets, reps, weight, rest and history | A timer cannot reconstruct your training plan or progression. |
| Heart rate | Wrist optical sensor, Bluetooth chest-strap support, or both | You need a sensor for heart-rate data; a strap can be more dependable during gripping and rapid wrist movement. |
| Controls | Physical buttons, touch response, screen size, readability and editing speed | You should be able to start, pause, mark a set and correct an entry without repeatedly reaching for your phone. |
| Battery | Expected smartwatch and workout runtime, charging time and charging frequency | A dead watch creates a missing session regardless of its training features. |
| Phone ecosystem | iOS/Android support and what functions require the companion app | A watch can be technically capable but inconvenient if key setup or editing functions are unavailable on your phone. |
| Privacy | Default Strava visibility, follower controls and whether activities can be hidden | Strength sessions may contain sensitive schedule or location information. |
Heart-rate tracking: optical sensor or chest strap
Strava measures heart rate in beats per minute and analyzes it with charts and Zones 1–5. A heart-rate sensor is required for that data. If your watch has no suitable sensor, Strava supports pairing a standalone Bluetooth heart-rate monitor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen wrist readings are useful
Wrist-based optical sensing is convenient for steady movements and general intensity trends. It keeps the setup simple and avoids another device to charge. Confirm that the watch records heart rate during the selected strength profile, not only during running or cycling.

When to add a Bluetooth chest strap
Lifting can make optical readings less dependable: a tight grip, bent wrist, pressing a bar against the sensor area, sweat and rapid changes in effort can all interfere with the light-based signal. A compatible Bluetooth chest strap moves measurement to the torso and can provide a cleaner signal for interval-heavy sessions. Pair it in the watch’s sensor settings, then confirm that the completed activity contains heart-rate data before relying on the setup.
Make the controls practical between sets
Strength training is an interaction problem as much as a sensor problem. Examine how many actions it takes to begin a session, mark a set complete, start rest and edit an error.
- Buttons: Physical controls are easier to operate with sweaty fingers or while wearing gloves. They also reduce accidental taps when a wrist is under load.
- Touch: Touchscreens can make exercise selection and editing faster, but small controls and wet fingers can be frustrating.
- Display: Check text size, contrast and whether the current exercise, target reps, completed reps and rest countdown can be read at a glance.
- Editing: Find out whether a missed rep or incorrect weight can be corrected on the watch, in the companion app, or only after export.
If the watch requires several swipes for every set, you may stop logging accurately. A less sophisticated watch with fast buttons can produce better real-world records than a feature-rich model that is cumbersome mid-workout.
Battery and charging should match your routine
Do not compare a manufacturer’s headline battery number without checking the conditions behind it. GPS use, always-on display, notifications, music, cellular radios, Bluetooth sensors and frequent heart-rate sampling can all reduce runtime. The supplied evidence does not establish universal battery ratings for specific models, so verify the exact edition and your intended settings.

Use a charging test before committing
- Write down how often you train and whether you also wear the watch overnight.
- Check the model’s stated workout runtime with the features you plan to use, including an external sensor if applicable.
- Identify when you can charge it without missing sleep, commute or training data.
- Confirm the connector, charging time and whether a low-battery mode disables the strength profile or heart-rate recording.
A watch that lasts several days but needs a proprietary cable you rarely carry may be less reliable than one with shorter runtime that fits your daily charging habit.
Set up Strava synchronization correctly
- Install the watch manufacturer’s companion app and complete firmware updates.
- Open the app’s connected services or third-party connections area and choose Strava.
- Authorize the account and review which activities are shared.
- On the watch, select the dedicated strength profile and confirm that exercise, set, rep, weight and rest fields are enabled.
- Pair a Bluetooth heart-rate monitor if you use one, then perform a short test session.
- Save the workout, keep the watch near the phone until synchronization finishes, and open Strava to verify the activity.
- If direct sync fails, export a GPX, TCX or FIT file from the supported service and upload it manually to Strava.
Test synchronization before your first important training block. A successful run or ride upload does not prove that a strength workout’s detailed fields will transfer, so inspect an actual lifting session.

Strava said it had more than 195 million users in more than 185 countries and that users uploaded more than 500 million strength activities in 2025. Chief Product Officer Matt Salazar described strength as one of the platform’s fastest-growing sport types. These figures indicate that strength data is becoming a larger part of Strava, but they do not guarantee that every partner sends identical exercise-level information.

Privacy and sharing choices
Review Strava’s privacy controls before connecting a watch. Decide whether your strength activities should be visible to everyone, followers or only you. You can also consider whether location data is useful for an indoor workout; sharing a gym-adjacent route or start point may reveal more than the activity itself.
Check privacy settings in both the watch maker’s app and Strava. A workout can be private in one service and shared in another, and partner apps may retain a separate copy of your exercise history.
Common problems and fixes
The activity never appears in Strava
- Confirm the account authorization has not expired.
- Open the companion app and wait for the watch to finish uploading.
- Check phone Bluetooth, internet access and background-app restrictions.
- Save the original activity and use a GPX, TCX or FIT export if direct sync remains unavailable.
Heart rate is missing
- Verify that heart-rate recording is enabled for the strength profile.
- Wear the watch securely above the wrist bone and clean the sensor.
- For a strap, check battery, pairing status and the selected sensor source.
- Repeat a short test and inspect the Strava chart before a full session.
Rep counts are wrong
Movement-based detection can misread partial reps, unusual tempo, unilateral exercises or movements that do not resemble the watch’s training library. Treat automatic counts as a convenience, review them after the set, and correct them in the watch or companion app when supported. If accuracy matters more than hands-free operation, use manual set and rep controls.

How to choose among common ecosystems
Choose a platform with a direct, reliable Strava path if you want minimal administration. Choose deeper strength controls if your priority is progression and exercise-level history. A COROS GPS watch is a documented example of the latter, with structured strength creation, rest alerts and movement-based rep tracking. Garmin, Apple Watch, Polar, Suunto, Wahoo, Amazfit, Samsung Galaxy Watch and WHOOP appear in Strava’s current integration documentation, but features differ by model and operating system.
For buyers who already own a watch, adding a Bluetooth heart-rate monitor may improve data quality without replacing the device. For buyers starting from scratch, compare the complete workflow—planning, recording, correcting, syncing and reviewing—not a single sensor specification.
