Choose a room air conditioner by matching its cooling capacity to the room, then compare efficiency, installation fit, noise behavior, controls and refrigerant. A larger unit is not automatically better: an oversized air conditioner can cool the air before removing enough moisture, leaving the room cold but clammy. Use the capacity figures below as a starting point, verify the window or wall opening, and compare efficiency only among units in the same design category.
1. Start with the room’s area and cooling load
Measure the room before looking at models. Multiply length by width for a rectangular room. For an L-shaped or otherwise irregular space, divide it into rectangles, calculate each area, and add the results. Include connected areas that the unit is expected to cool, but do not count spaces separated by closed doors.
The following ENERGY STAR recommendations assume an 8-foot ceiling. They are starting points rather than a substitute for a professional load calculation. The current ENERGY STAR buying guidance is available at ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner guide.

Apply the room adjustments
ENERGY STAR lists four adjustments to the chart:
- Reduce the required capacity by 10% for a heavily shaded room.
- Increase capacity by 10% for a very sunny room.
- Add 600 BTU/hour for every regular occupant above two.
- Add 4,000 BTU/hour when the room is a kitchen.
For a unit near a corner, check that its airflow can reach the rest of the room. A model that cannot distribute air effectively may perform poorly even when its nominal BTU rating appears correct.

Why oversizing causes problems
ENERGY STAR’s warning is direct: “Remember that bigger is not always better!” An oversized air conditioner costs more to purchase, wastes energy and does not provide better cooling. It may satisfy the thermostat quickly and shut off before it has dehumidified the room, producing a cool but damp feeling. Select the closest suitable capacity after applying the chart adjustments rather than automatically buying the largest model that fits the window.
2. Compare efficiency using the right metric
Look for the Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio (CEER) on the Energy Guide label and in the product specifications. CEER incorporates cooling efficiency and standby energy use, making it more useful than looking only at a cooling-only ratio. However, a CEER value is meaningful only when you compare units with similar capacity and design.
ENERGY STAR’s certification requirements set different CEER thresholds by capacity and by construction, including louvered versus non-louvered sides and casement categories. The current thresholds and definitions are in the ENERGY STAR room air conditioner key product criteria. Check the current certified-product listing instead of assuming that one headline number ranks every type of room AC.
What the certification signals
ENERGY STAR identifies high-efficiency compressors, fan motors and improved heat-transfer surfaces as design features that help certified units meet its requirements. Certification is a useful screening step, but it does not tell you the exact electricity cost in your home; that depends on capacity, runtime, local electricity rates, weather and thermostat settings.
Some certified models include an energy-saver mode that cycles the fan with the compressor, plus a filter reminder. These functions can reduce unnecessary operation or help you maintain airflow, but read the individual manual to learn exactly how each mode behaves.

3. Decide whether variable-speed operation is worth it
A conventional compressor generally switches between full output and off. A variable-speed compressor can change the compressor-motor speed to regulate temperature more continuously. ENERGY STAR says this approach can support quieter operation and energy savings compared with on/off operation.
Those are general operating benefits, not a guaranteed noise level or percentage saving for every model. If quietness is important, look for the manufacturer’s stated indoor sound information, read the installation requirements and consider where the compressor will sit. Do not infer a specific decibel performance from the phrase “variable speed” alone.
4. Match the installation style to your opening
Measure the window or wall opening, sill depth, sash movement and nearby obstructions before ordering. Confirm the listed minimum and maximum dimensions, the unit’s weight, electrical requirements and whether the opening can support the installation hardware. Follow the product manual rather than relying on a generic window diagram.
Standard window units
Traditional window models extend through an opened sash and use side panels or curtains to close the gaps. They are practical when the window dimensions match the specification, but the installed cabinet can block part of the view and prevent the window from operating normally.
Casement models
Casement or slider-window units are designed for openings that move sideways or crank outward instead of rising vertically. Confirm that the model is explicitly approved for your window type; a standard unit is not interchangeable with a casement design.

Through-wall units
A through-wall air conditioner sits in a permanent sleeve or wall opening. This can preserve the use of a window, but it requires a suitable structural opening and weather sealing. Check whether the manufacturer requires a specific sleeve and whether the building owner permits the work.

Some newer window models bracket the window or sill so that the sash can remain partly or fully operable, depending on the design. The compressor is positioned outside the room, which ENERGY STAR associates with lower indoor noise and a less obstructed view. These benefits depend on the exact model and installation. Verify window dimensions, clearance and the manufacturer’s instructions before choosing one.
Seal the installation carefully
Use every supplied insulation panel, foam strip and sealing material, and close gaps around the cabinet. ENERGY STAR’s Most Efficient guidance illustrates that an improperly installed room AC can leak as much air as a 6-square-inch hole. That is an illustration of potential installation leakage, not a measurement of every installation, but it shows why sealing matters for comfort and efficiency. 5. Choose controls and smart features for a real use case
Basic controls may be all you need for a bedroom or occasional-use room. Look for a thermostat, fan-speed choices, a timer and a sleep mode if those functions match your routine. A filter-reminder light is useful only if you can access and clean the filter regularly.
Connected models may add remote control, schedules and energy-use feedback through a phone app or home platform. Before paying more, check the exact model’s supported networks, app requirements, account policies and whether remote operation still works when the internet is unavailable. “Smart” does not describe one universal feature set; two models with similar marketing language may offer different schedules, sensors or usage reports.

6. Check the refrigerant
If environmental impact is part of your decision, identify the refrigerant listed for the individual model. ENERGY STAR names R-32, R-454B and R-290 as lower-global-warming-potential options for room air conditioners, while noting that R-32 and R-454B are still hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Refrigerant choice is model-specific, so verify the specification sheet or nameplate rather than assuming every new unit uses the same gas.
Do not attempt to convert or recharge a room AC with a different refrigerant. Refrigerant service involves sealed-system equipment and must follow the manufacturer’s requirements and applicable regulations.
7. Use this buying process before you pay
- Measure the space. Record each room section, ceiling height, sun exposure, shading, number of regular occupants and whether the space is a kitchen.
- Estimate capacity. Start with the ENERGY STAR chart, apply the 10% shade or sun adjustment, add occupants above two and add the kitchen allowance when applicable.
- Confirm the design. Decide whether you need a standard window, casement, through-wall, U-shaped or saddle-style model.
- Measure the opening. Compare the manufacturer’s minimum and maximum width, height, sill depth and clearance requirements with your actual opening.
- Filter for efficiency. Compare CEER among units of similar capacity and design, and confirm current ENERGY STAR certification in the official listing.
- Evaluate operation. Decide whether variable-speed control, a quieter compressor location, sleep mode or a filter reminder has practical value for the room.
- Check controls. Verify thermostat, timer, remote, scheduling, app and energy-feedback functions on the exact model number.
- Verify electrical and physical requirements. Check voltage, plug type, circuit requirements, weight, drainage provisions and any required sleeve or bracket.
- Plan the seal. Make sure the included insulation and sealing materials can close the opening without blocking required airflow.
- Record the refrigerant and documentation. Keep the installation manual, warranty information and refrigerant designation with your purchase records.
8. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by BTU alone
BTU capacity does not reveal whether the unit will fit your window, how efficiently it operates, how loud it is or what controls it provides. Use capacity to eliminate unsuitable models, then compare the other specifications.
Comparing unlike CEER figures
A casement unit and a louvered-side window unit may be subject to different ENERGY STAR thresholds. Compare products within the same class and capacity range, using the current criteria page rather than treating CEER as a universal ranking.

Ignoring the opening after delivery
Window dimensions that are close to the limit can leave no room for brackets, curtains or insulation. Measure before ordering and dry-fit the hardware where possible. Never improvise a support method that conflicts with the manual.

Leaving air gaps around the cabinet
Gaps waste cooled air and admit hot outdoor air. Install the supplied panels and foam, inspect the perimeter in daylight and correct leaks before judging the unit’s performance.
Expecting a smart app to solve a sizing problem
Remote control cannot compensate for an undersized unit, an oversized unit that fails to dehumidify, or a poorly sealed installation. Resolve capacity and fit first.
9. Rebates and total cost
The available evidence does not establish current retail prices, electricity costs, sound levels or a rebate for a particular location. ENERGY STAR’s 2024 partner toolkit says utilities and local efficiency programs may offer rebates on certified products, but eligibility and amounts vary by location. Check your utility or local energy-efficiency agency directly, and confirm that the exact capacity and model qualify before treating a rebate as part of your budget. 10. Final decision checklist
- The measured area and room conditions support the selected BTU range.
- The unit is not oversized simply because a larger rating is available.
- CEER is being compared with similar capacity and construction.
- The window, wall or sleeve dimensions meet the manual’s requirements.
- The compressor location and operating behavior suit the room’s noise needs.
- Controls and connected features match how you actually use the space.
- The refrigerant is identified and acceptable for your environmental priorities.
- Insulation, brackets, drainage and electrical requirements are understood before installation.
- Any expected rebate has been verified for your location and exact model.
The best room air conditioner is the one correctly sized for the space, efficient within its design class, securely installed and equipped with features you will use. Start with the room and opening measurements; only then narrow the choice by CEER, compressor behavior, controls and refrigerant.
