The useful question is not whether a robot vacuum has a “self-cleaning” dock, but which chores that dock actually performs. Check four functions separately: mop-pad washing, pad drying, dust auto-emptying and clean-water refilling. Then match the robot’s carpet behavior, mapping and obstacle avoidance, mop design, dock size and remaining maintenance to your home.
Manufacturer pages show how much these systems vary. Xiaomi, iRobot, TP-Link and Dreame describe different combinations of washing, drying, lifting, navigation and refill features; those descriptions explain specifications, not independent proof that one model cleans better than another.
What a self-cleaning mop station actually does
“Self-cleaning” is an umbrella label. A dock may automate one job or several, so read the station specification line by line rather than treating the label as a complete feature.

| Station function | What it automates | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mop washing | Rinses dirt from the robot’s mop pads when it returns to the dock. | Whether the wash cycle is automatic, how the washboard is cleaned, and how often dirty water must be emptied. |
| Mop drying | Uses heated or room-temperature air to reduce moisture after washing. | Drying duration, noise, energy use and whether the pads can still stay damp in your conditions. |
| Dust auto-emptying | Transfers debris from the robot’s onboard bin into a dock bag or container. | Bag type, replacement availability, capacity and the effect of pet hair or heavy debris. |
| Water refill | Refills the robot’s clean-water tank from the dock. | Clean- and dirty-water tank sizes, carrying frequency and whether a plumbing connection is supported in your variant. |
| Station self-cleaning | Runs a cleaning routine on the dock or wash tray. | Which parts are reached by the cycle and which surfaces still require hand cleaning. |
For example, the TP-Link Tapo RV70 Omni lists auto-emptying, mop washing and water filling, and describes a washing-and-drying combination. The Roomba Plus 405 Combo page describes pad washing, pad drying, debris emptying and a dock self-cleaning cycle. These are different bundles of automation; neither example means every model in that manufacturer’s range has the same dock.

Prioritize pad hygiene, not just washing speed
Drying is the feature that limits lingering moisture
A washed pad that remains wet can develop an odor, especially when the robot is used infrequently or the dock is in a cool, poorly ventilated room. Look for an explicit drying method and duration. Xiaomi’s Robot Vacuum 5 page specifies up to two hours of hot-air drying and reports an above-99% pad-drying rate under 25°C and 55% relative humidity, according to Xiaomi Internal Labs. That is a manufacturer test condition, not a guarantee for every home.
Inspect the washboard and cleaning cycle
The washboard is the tray where dirty water and debris collect. An accessible tray is easier to rinse than a sealed area that requires tools or a long disassembly. Xiaomi describes dual scraper arms and hot-water washing; iRobot describes a self-cleaning cycle after each pad wash. Those are vendor descriptions, so use them to identify the mechanism and maintenance access rather than to claim a hygiene result.
Hot water is a specification, not a sterilization promise
Xiaomi lists washing water up to 80°C. Temperature can help loosen greasy soil, but the figure alone does not establish germ reduction, stain removal or superior floor cleaning. Consider the complete cycle: contact time, agitation, pad material, drying and how often you remove residue from the tray.

- Carpet avoidance: the robot detects a rug and routes around it.
- Vacuum-only or no-mop zones: the app lets you define areas where mopping is disabled.
The Roomba Plus 405 Combo page says its pads lift when carpet is sensed. Xiaomi lists carpet modes and related behaviors for Robot Vacuum 5. Test the stated behavior against your actual pile height, fringe, dark patterns and loose mats; a sensor decision that works on a low woven rug may not work the same way on a thick or irregular one.
If a room has both tile and carpet, confirm whether the robot can vacuum the carpet in the same run without leaving a wet pad on it. If it cannot, plan separate vacuum and mop runs or use permanent no-mop zones. A dock’s washing capability does not compensate for a mop that repeatedly wets rugs.
Evaluate mapping, obstacles and low-clearance access
Mapping method and room controls
Look for the mapping technology, room labeling, no-go zones and room-by-room scheduling offered by the exact model. iRobot describes ClearView LiDAR mapping and obstacle avoidance for the Roomba Plus 405 Combo. A useful app should let you edit rooms, create keep-out or no-mop zones and start a targeted room without remapping the whole home.

Measure furniture before buying
Robot height and lidar or radar hardware determine whether it can enter under sofas and cabinets. Xiaomi says Robot Vacuum 5 uses a retractable navigation radar for qualifying low spaces higher than 9.5 cm, and that it does not enter such areas during mapping. Measure the lowest clearance in your rooms, including the distance beneath the dock’s approach path. A robot that maps around a low cabinet may never return later to clean underneath it.
Make the remaining maintenance visible
A multifunction dock reduces daily intervention; it does not make the system maintenance-free. Before purchase, identify every consumable and reservoir:
- Dust bag or bin: find the replacement part number, local availability and disposal method.
- Clean-water tank: determine how often you will carry and refill it and whether the model permits only approved solution.
- Dirty-water tank: plan a routine for emptying and rinsing it before odor develops.
- Mop pads: check whether pads are machine-washable, how many are included and how replacements attach.
- Filters and brushes: confirm cleaning and replacement intervals, especially for homes with pets or long hair.
- Dock tray and sensors: learn which areas the automatic cycle does not reach and how to wipe them safely.
Capacity claims are usage estimates, not guarantees. Xiaomi states that dust disposal is required every 75 days under its stated conditions. iRobot lists up to 75 days of auto-emptying and four weeks of mopping and pad washing for the Roomba Plus 405 Combo. TP-Link states up to six weeks without emptying with a 2.5-liter sealed dust bag for the RV70 Omni. Homes with shedding pets, renovation dust or frequent cleaning can fill a bag much sooner, so treat these numbers as planning references rather than a service interval.
Compare the actual mop mechanism and cleaning workflow
“Mopping” can mean a damp cloth dragged behind the robot, rotating pads, vibrating pads or another mechanism. The dock may wash one style of pad but not another, and the app may offer different water-flow and repeat-pass controls. Compare the mechanism with the messes you expect: fine dust on sealed hardwood, dried food on tile, greasy kitchen soil and tracked-in grit place different demands on agitation and water.

Dreame’s robot vacuum and mop comparison shows why product families must be compared by exact model. Its columns include mop method, mop self-cleaning, hot-air drying, washboard cleaning, self-emptying, water and solution refill, navigation and obstacle avoidance. Use that type of column-by-column check instead of assuming a feature listed for one family member appears on every regional variant.
Use these examples as a specification checklist, not a ranking
| Example | Documented station or robot features | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 | Retractable navigation radar, carpet options, high-temperature washing and drying, automatic dust collection; Xiaomi reports up to 80°C washing and up to two hours of hot-air drying. | Useful for checking low-clearance access, carpet modes and hygiene-related specifications. The figures are Xiaomi claims, including an Internal Labs drying result under stated conditions. |
| Roomba Plus 405 Combo | AutoWash dock, pad washing and drying, debris auto-emptying, LiDAR mapping, obstacle avoidance and carpet-triggered pad lifting. | Useful for checking whether a dock combines water care, dust handling and carpet protection in one system. |
| TP-Link Tapo RV70 Omni | Auto-emptying, mop washing, water filling, washing and drying, and carpet-aware mop lifting; TP-Link cites a 2.5-liter sealed bag lasting up to six weeks without emptying. | Useful for checking whether refill and carpet behavior are explicitly listed, and for interpreting a capacity estimate in your own household. |
| Dreame lineup | Comparison axes include mop self-cleaning, hot-air drying, washboard cleaning, self-emptying, water and solution refill, navigation and obstacle avoidance. | Useful as a reminder to verify the exact model column and regional listing rather than relying on a family name. |
None of these pages is an independent comparative test. They document what each manufacturer says the product does; they do not establish which robot removes more soil, leaves fewer streaks or avoids more objects in a particular home.
Follow a model-by-model buying process
- List your surfaces and obstacles. Record hard-floor types, carpet pile, thresholds, furniture clearances, stairs and areas where cables or pet bowls remain.
- Write down the chores you want to eliminate. Decide whether your priority is washing pads, drying them, emptying dust, refilling water or reducing all four.
- Open the exact regional product page. Confirm the dock variant, included tanks, mop hardware and app features for the model sold in your country.
- Verify carpet behavior. Look for lifting, removal, avoidance or no-mop controls, then compare the stated clearance and detection behavior with your rugs.
- Check navigation and reach. Confirm mapping, room editing, obstacle sensing and the robot’s height against the lowest furniture.
- Calculate maintenance in your routine. Count how often you can refill and empty tanks, replace bags, wash pads and clean the tray. A larger dock is worthwhile only if it fits where you can access it.
- Confirm consumables before checkout. Search the manufacturer’s parts list for compatible bags, pads, filters and cleaning solution; compatibility is model-specific, not universal.
- Plan the first run. Remove cables and small objects, create no-mop zones around vulnerable rugs and watch one complete cycle so you can correct maps and water settings.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming one “self-cleaning” claim covers the whole dock
Fix this by making a four-column checklist for washing, drying, dust emptying and water refill. Mark each as explicitly documented, absent or not stated. Do the same for station-tray cleaning.
Comparing vendor numbers as if they were laboratory benchmarks
A 75-day dust claim, a six-week bag claim and a four-week mopping claim use different products, homes and assumptions. Keep each number attached to its manufacturer and conditions; do not declare a winner from the figures alone.

Ignoring the dock’s physical footprint
Measure width, depth, height clearance and the space needed to remove both water tanks and the dust bag. Leave enough room to lift the robot out and wipe the tray without moving furniture.
Expecting the dock to clean the floor’s stubborn stains
Automated pad washing keeps the pad ready for another run; it does not turn a robot into a manual scrubber. Dried spills, grout lines and edges may still require spot cleaning or a separate tool.
Assuming every regional model is identical
Names can cover different docks, voltage versions, tank arrangements or app functions. Use the model number and local product page, and verify replacement parts before buying.
Which priorities fit different homes?
- Mostly hard floors: prioritize reliable pad washing, drying, water refill and edge or room controls. Carpet lifting matters less, but tray access and odor management matter more.
- Mixed hard floors and rugs: prioritize dependable pad lifting or removal, carpet detection, no-mop zones and enough suction and brush clearance for your pile.
- Pet-heavy homes: prioritize dust capacity, hair-resistant brush design, easy filter access and a drying cycle; expect to empty or clean parts more often than the advertised maximum.
- Small apartments: prioritize dock footprint, low-clearance navigation and quiet scheduling. A large water station is useful only if you can place and service it conveniently.
- Large or multi-room homes: prioritize mapping stability, room selection, water capacity and a route that returns to the dock without getting trapped by thresholds or clutter.
Bottom line: buy the dock’s jobs, then the robot around them
The best self-cleaning mop station is the one that automates the specific chores you dislike while behaving safely on your floors. Verify pad washing, drying, dust emptying and water refill independently; check the mop’s carpet behavior and the robot’s clearance and mapping; then budget for tanks, bags, pads, filters and tray cleaning. Treat hot-water temperatures, drying percentages and multi-week capacity figures as qualified manufacturer claims, and compare exact model variants rather than product-family labels.
