Megapixels tell you how many pixels a camera can record, not whether the phone will produce the best-looking photograph. Compare the complete camera system instead: the sensor and lens on each module, its focal length or field of view, aperture, autofocus, stabilization, and the way the phone delivers each zoom level. Those specifications describe the hardware you are buying; they do not replace consistent, real-world image tests.

Start with the camera module you will actually use

A modern phone may have a main camera, an ultra-wide camera and one or more telephoto cameras. Each is a separate optical system. A specification listed for the main camera does not automatically apply to the other lenses.

That distinction matters because the camera you use most often is not necessarily the strongest one in every condition. The main module may have the largest sensor and widest aperture, while the ultra-wide may trade low-light capability for a broader view. A telephoto module may offer a useful optical perspective but a smaller sensor. Compare modules individually, then judge how they work together.

Official pages illustrate this structure. Apple’s UK iPhone 16 specifications list separate entries for the main and ultra-wide cameras, including different focal lengths, apertures and framing. Google’s Pixel hardware specifications similarly identify sensor, lens, focus and stabilization details by camera. When a manufacturer lists only one figure in a summary, look for the detailed module-by-module section before drawing a conclusion.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

The specifications that matter beyond megapixels

Sensor size: the physical imaging area

Sensor size describes the imaging surface behind the lens. It is a separate specification from megapixel count. Two cameras can have the same resolution while using sensors of different physical sizes, and one phone can use different sensor sizes across its own modules.

A larger sensor can give a camera more light-gathering potential at a given exposure and can affect depth-of-field behavior, but the number alone does not guarantee better photographs. Lens design, processing, focus and stabilization also affect the final image. Treat sensor size as an important piece of the comparison, not as a guaranteed ranking.

Check whether the manufacturer publishes the size for each module. Google’s Pixel page includes sensor-size information among its per-camera specifications, although the help page covers multiple Pixel devices; confirm the exact model before transferring a figure to a buying table. If a manufacturer does not publish a sensor dimension, do not infer one from the megapixel count.

Aperture: how much light the lens admits

Aperture is commonly written as an f-number such as ƒ/1.6 or ƒ/2.2. A lower f-number represents a wider opening, which can admit more light and produce a shallower depth of field under comparable conditions. Compare the aperture on the module you intend to use, because the main, ultra-wide and telephoto lenses can have different values.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Aperture is not a complete low-light score. Image processing, shutter behavior, sensor size and stabilization influence the result as well. It is most useful when read alongside the sensor and the camera’s intended view.

Focal length and field of view: what fits in the frame

Focal length, expressed in millimetres, and field of view describe framing. A shorter focal length or a stated wide angle fits more of a scene; a longer focal length gives a tighter, more distant-looking view. Ultra-wide cameras are useful for architecture, landscapes and groups in confined spaces. Main cameras cover the everyday perspective. Telephoto cameras frame distant subjects without moving as close.

Manufacturers may use different ways to describe the same practical choice. Apple lists focal lengths for its modules, while Google lists field-of-view information. Use either measurement to ask the same question: which camera provides the view you want, and is that view produced by a dedicated lens or by cropping another camera?

Autofocus: whether the module can lock on where you need it

Look for autofocus, focus pixels or similar focus-system details on each camera. Autofocus is particularly valuable for close subjects, moving people and scenes where the subject is not at the centre of the frame. Some ultra-wide cameras have fixed focus, while others include autofocus; do not assume that every lens in a multi-camera phone focuses in the same way.

Specifications establish that a focus feature exists, not how quickly or reliably it works. No manufacturer specification page substitutes for testing focus speed, tracking and close-focus behavior in comparable scenes.

Stabilization: steadier handheld photos and video

Stabilization can be optical, electronic or a combination. Optical image stabilization (OIS) compensates for movement by adjusting lens or sensor hardware. Electronic image stabilization (EIS) uses image data and processing, especially during video. Check which method is offered, on which module, and whether the claim applies to still photos, video or both.

Module-specific wording is important. Xiaomi’s support information for the Xiaomi 14 says the main and telephoto cameras support OIS and EIS, while the ultra-wide supports EIS when recording video. That does not mean the ultra-wide has the same still-photo stabilization as the other two cameras. The page also explains OIS as movement compensation through lens or sensor adjustment. Read the use case attached to the feature instead of treating “stabilization” as a single phone-wide specification.

Understand optical, optical-quality and digital zoom

Zoom labels are often the easiest way to overestimate a phone camera. A dedicated telephoto camera creates a different optical view. Optical zoom uses lens coverage, or switches between cameras designed for different focal lengths. Digital zoom enlarges or crops image data and can reduce detail as the magnification increases.

Phones also use computational processing between their native camera views. A manufacturer may call some settings “optical-quality” even when the phone is combining a dedicated camera with software processing. Read the definitions on the specific product page.

Apple’s iPhone 16 specification page lists optical zoom capabilities separately from its maximum digital zoom. Xiaomi states that only specified zoom ratios on the Xiaomi 14 are optical and that other levels use digital zoom. The practical buying questions are:

  • Which focal-length views come from dedicated cameras?
  • What are the native optical or optical-quality steps?
  • What happens at settings between those steps?
  • Is the advertised maximum a digital extension rather than a new optical view?

If you frequently photograph concerts, sports or distant wildlife, prioritize a phone with a telephoto module at the framing you actually need. If you mostly photograph people and everyday scenes, a strong main camera may matter more than an extreme digital-zoom number.

A practical comparison checklist

Use this sequence when comparing two phones. Record the answer for every camera module rather than filling in one number for the whole phone.

  1. Identify the modules. Write down the main, ultra-wide and telephoto cameras, along with any depth or macro camera that affects a feature you care about.
  2. Record sensor information. Note the published sensor size for each module, plus megapixel resolution as a separate output detail.
  3. Record lens and framing. Capture aperture, focal length or field of view, and the camera responsible for each view.
  4. Map the zoom path. Mark native optical views, optical-quality settings and digital-only levels. Check what happens between dedicated cameras.
  5. Check focusing. Look for autofocus or focus-pixel information on the module used for close-ups, moving subjects or video.
  6. Check stabilization by use. Distinguish OIS from EIS and note whether each applies to stills, video or both.
  7. Separate hardware from evidence. Treat the completed sheet as a description of capability. Seek controlled, comparable samples before claiming that one phone takes better pictures.

How to turn the sheet into a buying decision

Choose the views you use most

Start with your subjects, not the camera count. Travelers may value an ultra-wide view for buildings and landscapes. Parents may care about autofocus and stabilization for moving children. Concert-goers may need a real telephoto view. A phone with fewer modules can still suit you better if its available views match your habits.

Give priority to the weakest camera in your routine

Many phones advertise a strong main camera while leaving the ultra-wide or telephoto with a smaller sensor, narrower aperture or limited focus. If you switch lenses frequently, inspect those compromises. A specification that looks impressive on the main camera says little about the quality of your night-time ultra-wide video.

Use stabilization and autofocus as practical filters

For handheld evening photos, OIS on the camera you will use at night is more relevant than OIS listed only for another module. For close subjects, verify autofocus on the actual close-focus camera. For video, confirm EIS or OIS support in the video mode you intend to use.

Demand evidence for claims about image quality

Official specification pages are authoritative for what the manufacturer says the hardware includes. They are not controlled side-by-side tests. A meaningful comparison should use the same scenes, lighting, subjects, focal lengths and output settings on both phones. It should also show whether a claimed advantage survives difficult conditions such as low light, motion and digital zoom.

The available manufacturer pages establish module specifications, but they do not establish a universal winner or quantify how much each trait improves a photograph. Be wary of any buying guide that turns one aperture, sensor-size or megapixel figure into a guaranteed result.

Common specification-sheet mistakes

  • Equating resolution with quality: more megapixels can provide a larger output or cropping latitude, but they do not describe sensor size, lens quality, focus or processing.
  • Applying the main-camera specification to every lens: stabilization, aperture and autofocus must be checked per module.
  • Calling every zoom setting optical: separate dedicated-camera views from digital magnification and read the manufacturer’s terminology.
  • Ignoring regional and model differences: verify the exact phone, edition and market on the linked specification page.
  • Treating a feature list as a test: specifications show capability on paper; they do not measure dynamic range, color, noise, detail retention or autofocus reliability.
