No phone case can guarantee that a phone will survive every drop. To choose a drop-protection case, first confirm it fits your exact phone model, then compare its coverage, construction and stated test method with the everyday features you need. Drop-test claims are manufacturer statements, not a promise against damage.
Start by checking the exact phone model
Case fit is model-specific. Check the make and full model name shown in your phone’s settings or purchase information, then confirm that exact model on the case listing. A case described for iPhone 17 or iPhone 13 Pro is not evidence that it fits another phone, even if the devices look similar. OtterBox’s Defender Series Pro listing and Commuter Series listing are specific to those models.
Which case features are relevant to drop protection?
Look beyond a “rugged” label and compare how the case is built and what it covers. Manufacturer product pages describe features such as multiple material layers, shock-absorbing or grippy edges, and raised edges around the display and camera. These are useful design details to assess, but they do not establish how a case will perform in every fall.

- Screen and camera: Raised lips can help keep these surfaces from directly contacting a flat surface when the phone lands face-down or camera-side-down.
- Construction: Compare the described layers and materials rather than assuming that a thicker case or a higher test multiple is automatically better for every impact.
For example, OtterBox describes the Defender Series Pro for iPhone 17 as having multiple layers and raised edges around the screen and camera. The Commuter Series page for iPhone 13 Pro describes a dual-layer design. Those descriptions are product-specific manufacturer information, not independent comparative test results. How to interpret drop-test ratings
A test multiple describes a manufacturer’s claim about testing against a stated test sequence; it does not mean a case prevents damage in all real-world drops. OtterBox says its explanation of MIL-STD-810G 516.6 involves 26 drops from four feet. The company describes particular products as tested to that cited sequence at 3X or 7X. These are OtterBox’s statements; the pages do not establish independent verification of the products or a guarantee for a particular fall.

OtterBox’s testing explainer describes the cited sequence as 26 drops from four feet; the explainer does not state a publication year. That is the company’s description of the sequence in its DROP+ explanation, not an independently verified account of every possible configuration of the standard. OtterBox characterizes its program this way: “The + in DROP+ represents the extra tests our engineers perform in addition to MIL-STD to deliver the most protective phone cases.” OtterBox DROP+ testing explainer.

When comparing claims, note the named test, stated repetitions and who makes the claim. Do not infer that a higher multiple means a case will outperform another design in every kind of drop.

- Grip, bulk and weight: A grippy edge may make the phone easier to hold, while a more substantial design may feel bulkier in a pocket or hand.
- Ports and dust exposure: Check whether ports are covered and whether that design suits how you charge or connect accessories.
- Charging and accessories: Verify wireless-charging or magnetic-accessory compatibility for the exact case and phone; do not assume it from appearance alone.
- Holsters and straps: If you use these, confirm they are available and compatible with the specific case.
- Screen protectors: A raised case lip and a screen protector address different things. A compatible protector adds a separate display layer; verify fit with both the phone and case.
Raised lips may reduce direct contact with a flat surface, but neither they nor a screen protector establish a guarantee against scratches or cracks. A compatible camera protector, if considered, also needs to fit the phone and case without interfering with use.
A practical comparison checklist
- Identify the phone’s exact make and model, then check that the product listing names it.
- Inspect the stated coverage around corners, screen and camera, along with described layers and edge materials.
- Read the drop-test wording closely: identify the test sequence, claimed multiple and manufacturer making the claim.
- Check trade-offs that affect your routine, including grip, bulk, port covers, charging, magnetic accessories, holsters and straps.
- If you want a screen protector, confirm that it is compatible with both the exact phone and the selected case.
What a case can—and cannot—tell you
The product material available here comes from one case manufacturer, so it supports understanding that company’s product descriptions and claims, not a market-wide ranking or a conclusion about which case is safest. No cited claim can settle how a particular phone will fare after a drop: the surface, angle and circumstances of an impact can differ. Choose a well-fitting case whose coverage and everyday trade-offs suit your needs, and treat test language as one comparison point rather than a promise.
