The right multitool is not defined by a steel name or a dramatic lock-strength number. Check three things in order: whether the saw’s design matches the material and access you need, whether the blade steel balances edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance and sharpening effort, and whether the lock actually covers the implements you will use. Then verify size, weight, grip, carry options and serviceability. Manufacturer specifications can confirm what a model includes, but they are not automatically independent performance tests.

Start with the job, not the steel label

A multitool saw is a specialized implement. Before comparing models, write down the material you expect to cut, the approximate thickness, how often you will cut it and whether you need the saw for an emergency or for repeated work. A compact saw that is suitable for occasional branches may be a poor choice for construction lumber, plastic or metal. Unless the manufacturer identifies a material range, do not assume that a toothed blade is appropriate for every cutting job.

Use the same discipline for the knife and lock. A premium steel cannot compensate for a saw that is too short to control, and a strong lock is less useful if the release is awkward with gloves. The practical specification is the combination of implement design, steel, lock coverage and handling.

What should I look for in a multitool saw?

Confirm that a saw is actually included

Product families often have several configurations. Check the exact model’s implement list rather than relying on a photograph or a family name. The Leatherman Rebar, for example, lists a saw among its 17 tools. The Leatherman Surge uses a blade exchanger that can accept either a saw or a file, so its available cutting function depends on the installed blade.

Inspect the tooth pattern and intended use

Look at the tooth shape, spacing and cutting length. A manufacturer may explain what the pattern is intended to do. SOG describes its double-tooth design as alternating teeth that help the blade grip while reducing friction. That description explains the design goal; it does not establish a common cut-speed, durability or material-range score against other saws.

For wood, ask whether the maker specifically identifies the saw for green branches, dry wood, boards or another material. “Does a multitool saw work for wood?” has no universal yes-or-no answer because tooth geometry, blade length and the wood itself determine the result. If the listing does not identify the intended material, treat the saw as a general-purpose emergency implement and avoid forcing it through jobs that require a full-size hand saw.

Compare cutting length with the material

A short blade may be convenient to carry but can require more strokes and careful repositioning on thicker material. Compare the usable toothed section, not only the tool’s overall closed length. Also check whether the saw can open fully without the neighboring implements blocking your hand or the workpiece.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check access and deployment

Examine how the saw is reached when the tool is closed, whether it can be opened without unfolding every implement and whether the handle gives your fingers a secure purchase. A saw that is technically present but difficult to access may be unsuitable for frequent use. Interchangeable systems add flexibility, but they also require a place to store the spare blade and a clear method for changing it.

How to compare multitool blade steel

Steel should be evaluated as a set of trade-offs rather than a ranking. Four properties matter most:

  • Edge retention: how long the edge remains useful before sharpening.
  • Toughness: how well the blade tolerates impacts, bending and abuse without chipping or breaking.
  • Corrosion resistance: how much protection the steel provides in wet, salty or humid conditions.
  • Sharpening and maintenance: how easily you can restore the edge with the equipment and time you actually have.

Heat treatment, blade geometry and the manufacturer’s sharpening angle also affect results. A steel designation by itself does not predict how a particular multitool will perform.

Manufacturer characterizations of common steels

Steel What the manufacturer says Practical implication
420HC Leatherman describes it as offering good edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance, while being relatively easy to sharpen. The company identifies it as its most common multitool blade steel. A balanced choice when straightforward field sharpening and general-purpose use matter more than maximum edge life.
CPM MagnaCut Leatherman describes it as a premium steel with excellent edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance, and says it is relatively easier to maintain. Potentially attractive when you want high performance across several properties and have access to suitable maintenance tools.
S30V Leatherman describes it as a high-performance stainless steel with excellent edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance, but more difficult to sharpen than some steels. Useful for users who prioritize edge life and accept greater sharpening effort.

These are Leatherman’s descriptions, not an independent, controlled ranking. They should help you identify the trade-off you value, not serve as proof that one steel always outperforms another.

Use hardness as a model specification, not a universal score

The Rebar product page specifies a primary blade of 420HC stainless steel and lists a hardness of 55–59 HRC. That range describes that model’s blade specification; it is not a hardness requirement for every 420HC multitool and does not, by itself, predict cutting performance.

Match steel to maintenance reality

Choose the steel you can maintain. If the tool will live in a vehicle, tackle box or damp work bag, corrosion resistance and easy cleaning may outweigh maximum edge retention. If you regularly cut abrasive materials and can sharpen with appropriate equipment, longer edge retention may justify a harder-to-maintain option. Plan for routine cleaning and drying regardless of the steel label.

Do all the tools on a multitool lock?

Read the coverage statement carefully

“Locking tools” is not the same as “every tool locks.” The Rebar page states that every feature except the plier head locks into place. That exception matters: the plier head is held by the tool’s pivot and handles rather than the implement-locking system. The Surge page describes its tools as locking and emphasizes control, but you should still verify the exact implement list and release arrangement for the configuration you plan to buy.

Operate the release before buying

Identify the release location, direction and required hand position. A good lock should engage positively when the implement is fully open and should disengage without placing your fingers in the blade’s path. Test access with your dominant and non-dominant hand if the tool is intended for shared use. Gloves, cold weather and limited visibility can make a small release harder to use than it appears in a product photograph.

Interpret strength claims narrowly

SOG describes its Arc-Lock as ambidextrous, operable with one hand and self-adjusting. The same description says it was “Tested at over 1000 lbs. of force (measured at the lock).” SOG does not provide a test protocol in the cited passage, so that figure cannot be compared directly with another lock’s number. It is a vendor-stated result at the lock, not a standardized industry rating for the complete multitool.

Compare complete designs, not isolated features

Decision area Questions to answer Why it matters
Saw Is it dedicated or interchangeable? What tooth pattern, cutting length and intended material are stated? Determines whether the saw fits the actual cutting job.
Blade steel How are edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance and sharpening balanced? Sets maintenance effort and likely suitability for your environment.
Lock Which implements lock? Where is the release? Can you operate it safely with either hand? Controls safety and confidence during forceful use.
Handling What are the closed dimensions, weight, grip shape and access path? A tool that is too heavy or awkward may be left at home.
Carry Is a pocket clip or pouch included, optional or unavailable? Determines how consistently the tool is available when needed.
Ownership Can worn components be replaced, and what service route does the maker provide? Replacement policies vary by manufacturer and can affect long-term value.

Verified examples of different approaches

Leatherman Rebar: compact, fixed implement set

The Rebar’s official specifications list 17 tools, including a saw and a 420HC knife. The primary blade is listed as 2.9 inches, the closed length as 4 inches and the weight as 6.7 ounces. The page states that every feature except the plier head locks. Its listed blade hardness is 55–59 HRC. These are model specifications; check the current product listing because configurations and availability can change. A sheath is sold separately.

Leatherman Surge: interchangeable saw/file setup

The Surge is an example of a different design decision. Its tools are described as locking, and its exchanger can switch between a saw and a file. That arrangement can reduce the number of separate tools you carry, but it also means the required implement must be installed and available when you need it. The description does not establish that the interchangeable saw cuts faster or lasts longer than a dedicated saw.

SOG Arc-Lock and double-tooth descriptions

SOG’s buying information illustrates two features to inspect: an Arc-Lock described as ambidextrous, one-handed and self-adjusting, and a double-tooth saw with alternating teeth intended to improve grip while reducing friction. Treat both as design claims. Without matched test methods, they do not prove superiority over another manufacturer’s lock or saw.

A step-by-step buying checklist

  1. Define the cutting task. Record the material, approximate thickness, frequency and environment. If the maker does not state that the saw suits the material, do not assume it does.
  2. Verify the exact implement list. Confirm that a saw is included, or determine which interchangeable blade provides it.
  3. Inspect the saw physically or in detailed images. Look for tooth arrangement, usable cutting length, deployment clearance and hand access.
  4. Choose a steel trade-off. Decide whether easy sharpening, edge retention, toughness or corrosion resistance is the priority you will notice most.
  5. Map lock coverage. List every implement you expect to use and confirm which ones lock. Note exceptions such as a non-locking plier head.
  6. Practice the release motion. Check one-handed operation, ambidextrous access and safe finger placement before applying force.
  7. Check carry and dimensions. Compare closed size and weight with your pocket, belt or pack. Verify whether the pouch or clip is included.
  8. Confirm service options. Find out how the manufacturer handles worn blades, pivots and other replaceable components before purchase.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by steel name alone

A premium designation does not tell you whether sharpening equipment is available, whether the blade geometry suits your work or whether the tool’s size is comfortable. Start with the job and maintenance plan, then use steel properties to narrow the options.

Treating a lock-force number as a safety guarantee

A force figure measured at a lock is meaningful only with its test setup, loading direction, sample condition and failure definition. Do not use SOG’s “over 1000 lbs.” statement as a universal comparison or as permission to exceed the tool’s intended use.

Assuming every saw cuts every wood

Wood species, moisture, diameter and grain direction change the effort required. A multitool saw can be useful for limited field cuts, but the manufacturer’s stated material and the blade’s dimensions should determine whether it is appropriate.

Ignoring access and maintenance

A tool that is difficult to open, too heavy to carry or difficult to sharpen may not be available when needed. Include deployment, grip, cleaning, sharpening and carry in the same decision as steel and lock type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: the best specification is the one that matches your use

Choose a saw-equipped multitool by verifying the saw’s intended material, tooth design, cutting length and access; comparing steel on four properties rather than its name; and confirming exactly which implements lock and how the release works. Use manufacturer claims as product descriptions, not as independent rankings. Finally, make sure the complete tool’s size, weight, carry method and service options fit the way you will actually carry and maintain it.
