For upscaling, check the exact handheld model’s supported feature, how it works, which games use it, the screen’s native resolution, and the power conditions behind any performance claim. A processor name alone does not guarantee that a game offers a particular upscaler or that it will perform the same way on battery.
Check which upscaling method the handheld actually supports
“Upscaling” can refer to different features, and support for one does not automatically mean support for another. Start with the exact handheld model and its software documentation, then check the settings for the games you play.
Game-integrated upscaling such as AMD FSR
AMD describes FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) as a game-integrated feature. AMD says FSR versions 1, 2, 3, and 4 are available only in select games, require integration by the game developer, and are supported on select AMD products. See AMD’s Ryzen Z-series product documentation and confirm support for both the game and the device. A handheld using an AMD processor does not make FSR available in every title.
Driver-level scaling such as RSR
ASUS describes Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) as driver-level scaling that can be useful when a game does not offer FSR. In its ROG Ally FAQ, ASUS explains that a player can set a game to 720p and scale the image to the Ally’s 1080p display; ASUS also says RSR does not affect a game already set to 1080p. These details describe ASUS’s implementation, not a guarantee that another handheld or operating system has the same controls or behavior. Check the device maker’s instructions for the model you are considering. ASUS ROG Ally FAQ

Match the game’s render resolution to the screen
Compare the handheld’s native panel resolution with the resolution at which the game renders. Upscaling is relevant when the game renders below the screen’s native resolution; lowering render resolution may improve performance, but the resulting image depends on the game, the upscaling method, and its settings.
For context, ASUS announced the original ROG Ally with a 120 Hz, 1920×1080 touchscreen. That is a specification for the original Ally announcement, not a universal handheld standard or a claim about every Ally variant. ASUS’s ROG Ally launch announcement

Verify the exact processor and configuration
Processor support is one part of the check, not a substitute for checking the game and software. AMD lists Ryzen Z1 and Z2 handheld processors with different graphics architectures and specifications. Confirm the exact processor and graphics configuration in the model’s listing or manufacturer documentation; do not assume that every device described as “Ryzen Z” has identical capabilities or software support. Also check the operating system and the maker’s graphics tools. Lenovo describes FSR and band-limited pixel scaling on SteamOS models of Legion Go S, illustrating that the software platform and exact configuration can affect which scaling options are described for a device. Read performance claims with their power conditions
Handheld performance modes can change with power settings and whether the device is plugged in. ASUS lists Ally X modes of 10W Silent, 15W Performance, and 25W Turbo, with Turbo up to 30W when connected to AC. Its published test notes specify Windows 11, a 120 Hz 1920×1080 display, Turbo at 30W, and the device plugged in using 65W power delivery. ASUS says results vary with configuration and newer drivers. These are ASUS specifications and test conditions, not a promise of the same performance unplugged. ASUS ROG Ally X product page
When evaluating a performance claim, note the model, power mode, plugged-in status, game, and resolution. Without comparable conditions, figures from different devices do not establish which one will provide better upscaled visuals, frame rates, or battery life.

Use a model-by-model checklist
- Upscaler: Is the named feature game-integrated, driver-level, or another scaling method?
- Game support: Does the specific game include the feature, or does the handheld offer a separate driver-level option?
- Screen and render resolution: What is the panel’s native resolution, and what resolution will the game render at?
- Hardware: What exact processor and graphics configuration does the model use?
- Platform and tools: Which operating system, drivers, and manufacturer controls are available on that exact configuration?
- Power conditions: Which mode and plugged-in or battery conditions apply to any quoted performance result?
For each candidate, verify current game support, regional model variants, and driver behavior with the manufacturer and game documentation. The cited vendor information describes features and specifications; it does not provide a controlled cross-device comparison of visual quality, frame rates, or battery life.
