If heat worries you, compare how a foldable behaves during a long, demanding workload—not just its processor name or a short benchmark score. The useful evidence is sustained surface temperature, performance retained as the phone warms, and the thermal controls it uses, such as dimming, charging pauses, app restrictions, warnings or shutdowns.
No cited test establishes one universally coolest foldable. Results depend on the model, software, workload, test method, ambient conditions and whether a lower temperature comes from better cooling or more aggressive performance limits.
Why heat matters before a phone shuts down
A foldable can become less useful well before an emergency shutdown. Samsung says an overheated Galaxy foldable may reduce brightness and performance, stop charging, close running apps and restrict other features; if the temperature continues rising, the device can shut down. Warning messages and the exact behavior differ by model, so the manual for the specific phone matters. Samsung’s foldable-device precautions describe these protections.

Google likewise lists gaming, video recording, flashlight use and augmented- or virtual-reality applications as activities that can generate more heat on Pixel Fold. Reduced-power operation or a temporary shutdown can follow. That means “does it overheat?” is not a binary question: the practical issue is how quickly the phone becomes uncomfortable or restricted, and whether it still performs acceptably during the work you actually do.
#1 Best Overall
- Unfold extraordinary with Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold; with Pixel’s largest screen and Gemini, Google’s most advanced AI, it’s made for multitasking and entertainment[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[14]
- The gearless, high-strength hinge makes it durable enough to handle about 10 years of folding[3]; plus, Pixel 10 Pro Fold is built with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance[4]
- The brighter-than-ever 8-inch Super Actua Flex display is Pixel’s largest screen yet[12]; and you can use Split Screen to plan a trip, drag and drop images, and open multiple apps at once[5]
The evidence to compare when shopping
Sustained-load temperature
Look for measurements taken after a meaningful period of continuous work, preferably the same stress test on each phone. Record the test duration, ambient temperature, device orientation and the measurement location. A reading from the back cover is a surface temperature, not the internal battery or processor temperature. A cooler outer panel can result from a cooler chip, a larger heat-spreading area, a different hinge or internal layout, or software that limits speed sooner.
Peak and average values answer different questions. Peak temperature indicates the hottest reported point; average temperature shows what the device felt like over the test. Do not treat either number as a universal operating limit.
Performance retention
Check frame-rate or benchmark behavior from the beginning to the end of the run. A phone that starts fast and then loses substantial performance may be less suitable for long gaming sessions than one with a lower initial score that stays steady. The best comparison pairs the temperature curve with the performance curve, rather than ranking phones by heat alone.

- Universal unlocked: Compatible with all major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and other prepaid carriers.
Workload relevance
Gaming and repeated video capture are useful for heavy users because they sustain processor, graphics and camera loads. Idle temperature says little about those situations. Charging in a hot room, navigation in a sunlit car and flashlight use are separate scenarios; a synthetic graphics test cannot stand in for all of them.
What current comparative tests actually show
Published results provide examples, not a definitive league table. Android Authority measured the Motorola Razr Fold at 37.9°C peak and 33.5°C average in its Wild Life Extreme test, compared with 39.2°C peak and 37.2°C average for the Galaxy Z Fold7. Those figures come from that outlet’s test method and conditions. Read the Razr Fold benchmark report.
| Wild Life Extreme result | Motorola Razr Fold | Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak surface reading | 37.9°C | 39.2°C | The Razr Fold recorded a lower peak in this specific test. |
| Average surface reading | 33.5°C | 37.2°C | The average gap was larger than the peak gap in this report. |
| Test context | Wild Life Extreme; outlet-specific method and conditions | Not a universal ranking across every workload or environment. | |
A separate Android Authority comparison reported the Razr Fold reaching 35°C while several other tested foldables hovered around 40°C. Because that was a different comparison, do not combine its 35°C figure with the table above or assume the tests were interchangeable. See the separate foldable overheating comparison.
Long-run behavior can also reveal a performance cost. In Ars Technica’s extended gaming test of the Galaxy Z Fold7, gaming performance slowed by about 40% under thermal stress, while CPU performance fell about 10–15%. Those percentages describe that reviewer’s test of that model, not every Z Fold7 owner or every game. Read the Galaxy Z Fold7 review and thermal test.

How manufacturer guidance changes your decision
Pixel Fold operating range
Google’s current Pixel Fold safety guide says: “Do not use or charge the phone at ambient temperatures lower than 0°C (32°F) or higher than 35°C (95°F).” This is guidance for Pixel Fold, not a universal limit for all foldables. The same guide advises moving the phone to a cooler or warmer location and waiting before using it again when it exceeds its normal operating temperature. Read Google’s Pixel Fold safety and regulatory guide.
Galaxy foldable precautions
Samsung advises Galaxy foldable owners to avoid extended direct sunlight and very hot places such as a car in summer. It also warns against damaged chargers or cables. If overheating makes you uncomfortable, stop using the device. Since warning messages can vary by model, check the support page and manual for the exact phone rather than relying on a generic temperature app or an internet rule of thumb. Samsung’s precautions page lists the relevant warnings.
Separate design claims from independent evidence
Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra use a dual-path charging architecture that distributes power more efficiently across the battery system. Executive vice president Sunghoon Moon described it as enabling “faster, more stable and reliable charging while improving heat management.” That is a manufacturer explanation of the design, not independent proof that those phones reach lower temperatures in every charging situation. Read Samsung’s engineering explanation.
The same article cites more than 100 reliability-validation tests covering drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture and debris. The count does not mean 100 thermal tests, so do not use it as a heat benchmark. When a specification page mentions a vapor chamber, charging architecture or other cooling feature, look for a repeatable third-party result under a workload that resembles yours.

A step-by-step buying method
- Define your demanding scenario. Choose the activity that matters most: long gaming, repeated 4K video recording, fast charging, navigation in a hot car or a mixture. A phone optimized for brief bursts may not suit an hour-long session.
- Collect matched tests. Prefer reviews that run the same benchmark or game on both candidates, for a stated duration and ambient condition. Note whether the phone was open or closed, because the exposed surface area and internal layout can change heat spreading.
- Record both temperature and output. Write down peak and average surface readings alongside frame rates, benchmark scores or recording behavior. A lower temperature paired with a major performance drop is not automatically the better result.
- Inspect the controls. Look for observed dimming, charging interruptions, closed apps, warnings, network changes and shutdowns. A reviewer’s screenshot of a warning is more useful than a marketing phrase such as “better thermal management.”
- Check the source date and software. Thermal behavior can change with firmware, game updates and regional hardware. Record the model, storage or processor configuration, software version if stated, test date and country variant.
- Compare within the same form factor. Compare compact flip phones with other compact flips and book-style phones with book-style models. Their battery size, hinge, internal board layout and available cooling area make cross-category conclusions weak.
- Read the manual before purchase. Confirm ambient-temperature limits, charging warnings and what the phone does when it overheats. Make sure the charger and cable you plan to use meet the manufacturer’s requirements.
Match the phone to the way you use it
Long gaming sessions
Prioritize sustained frame-rate stability and the point at which thermal throttling begins. Ask whether the review ran the game long enough to reach a plateau, not just a single benchmark pass. The Galaxy Z Fold7 example shows why a high short-term score can mislead: its extended test recorded about a 40% gaming-performance decline under thermal stress.
Video recording and camera-heavy work
Repeated recording can heat both the processor and camera system. Look for tests that record continuously at the resolution and frame rate you use, and check whether the phone stops recording, displays a warning or dims the screen. A graphics-only test does not establish how a camera session will behave.
Charging and hot environments
Fast charging adds heat while the phone may already be warm from navigation or sunlight. Look for evidence of charging pauses and the ambient conditions in which they occurred. Never leave a foldable in a sunlit vehicle; Samsung specifically identifies a summer car as a hot location to avoid. Do not use a damaged charger or cable.

Travel and navigation
Navigation combines screen brightness, cellular radios, GPS and sunlight. Seek tests or owner guidance for that combination rather than extrapolating from idle readings. For Pixel Fold, remain within Google’s stated 0°C to 35°C ambient use-and-charge range.
What to do if a foldable becomes hot
- Stop the demanding task. End the game, recording session, flashlight or AR/VR activity that is generating heat.
- Disconnect charging if it is safe to do so. If the device or connector is damaged, stop using that charger and cable. Do not keep charging a phone that is visibly distressed.
- Move it out of direct sun and extreme surroundings. Place it in a cooler or warmer location appropriate to the model’s guidance; Google gives this instruction for Pixel Fold.
- Wait for normal operation. Let the phone cool before resuming work. If it displays a temperature warning, follow the on-screen instruction rather than repeatedly reopening apps.
- Stop using it and seek support if the problem persists. Samsung says to stop using a Galaxy foldable if overheating makes you uncomfortable. Repeated warnings during light use, swelling, a damaged connector or a burning smell warrant manufacturer or authorized-service attention.
There is no evidence here to recommend an aftermarket cooling fan, a generic thermal-monitoring app or an unapproved case or screen modification as a universal fix. Such accessories can interfere with the hinge, wireless charging, sealing or warranty unless the phone maker explicitly supports them.
A practical checklist for comparing listings and reviews
| Question | What a useful answer includes |
|---|---|
| How hot does it get? | Peak and average surface readings, test duration, ambient temperature and measurement location. |
| What happens as it warms? | Frame-rate or benchmark retention plus any dimming, charging pause, app closure, warning or shutdown. |
| Does the test match my use? | The same game, recording mode, charging condition or navigation scenario you expect to use. |
| Can I compare the numbers directly? | The same method, orientation, software context and phone category; otherwise treat the result as directional only. |
| What are the manufacturer’s limits? | The exact model manual, ambient-temperature range and charger or cable precautions. |
| Is a design claim independently demonstrated? | A repeatable third-party test, not just a statement about a vapor chamber or charging architecture. |
Bottom line
Choose the foldable that maintains acceptable performance and charging behavior through your longest realistic workload, with predictable warnings and recovery. Use sustained-load tests, not chip names or one-pass benchmarks; keep surface temperature, performance retention and thermal controls together. Current published tests show meaningful differences between models, but their methods do not justify naming a universal coolest foldable. Follow the purchased model’s operating limits, keep it away from direct sun and damaged chargers, and stop using it when heat makes the device or your hand uncomfortable.
