The right cloud infrastructure monitoring platform collects the signals your estate actually produces, connects metrics, logs and traces during an investigation, turns important conditions into actionable alerts, and keeps instrumentation and costs manageable. Start with your workloads and operating model—not a feature list or a headline price.

Use the checklist below to compare native cloud services and third-party platforms against the same requirements, then validate the finalists with representative telemetry and realistic retention volumes.

1. Start with the three telemetry signals

A monitoring platform is only useful when it can answer the question behind an incident. Metrics, logs and traces provide different parts of that answer, so check each one explicitly.

Metrics: “Is something changing?”

Metrics are numeric measurements recorded over time: utilization, request rate, latency, error rate, queue depth or availability. They are efficient for dashboards, thresholds and trend analysis. Ask whether the platform can collect the metrics that matter for every cloud service and workload you run, at the resolution your operations team needs.

Logs: “What event occurred?”

Logs are timestamped records of activity. They can contain deployment messages, authentication events, application errors and detailed diagnostic context that a single number cannot show. Verify that the service accepts the log formats you produce, handles the volume during a failure, and lets you search and retain logs for the periods your incident and compliance processes require.

Traces: “Where did this request spend time?”

Distributed traces follow a request across services. They help isolate a slow dependency or a failing hop in a chain that may span containers, managed services and external APIs. Confirm which trace data the platform can ingest and how it connects a trace to the related metrics and log entries.

These signals are complementary rather than interchangeable. A useful investigation might begin with a latency metric, open a trace for an affected request, and then inspect the log records from the service and dependency involved. A platform that stores the signals separately without a practical way to pivot between them creates extra manual work.

2. Map coverage to your actual cloud estate

Make an inventory before comparing products. Coverage claims are meaningful only when they include the services and components your team operates.

Cloud providers and managed services

List every provider in scope and the managed services that support production: compute, databases, storage, networking, queues, serverless functions and identity services. For each item, record whether collection is native, requires an agent, uses an integration, or needs custom instrumentation. Google Cloud’s monitoring documentation treats native services, agents, third-party integrations, custom instrumentation and logs as separate collection dimensions; use the same distinction in your evaluation.

Virtual machines, containers and orchestration

Determine how the platform observes host operating systems, container runtimes and orchestrators. Check whether it can associate host, node, container and workload identity without forcing operators to maintain fragile naming conventions. Include autoscaling and short-lived workloads in the test: a platform may appear complete when tested only against long-running virtual machines.

Applications and external dependencies

Inventory the languages, frameworks and services that generate application telemetry. Include third-party APIs, content delivery, payment, messaging and database dependencies that affect user-facing performance. Ask which components have ready-made integrations and which need an agent, SDK or custom exporter. “Supported” should mean that the required signals are collected with the fields and labels your team needs—not merely that a logo appears in an integration catalogue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Logs and data formats

Document log sources, formats, expected volume and sensitive fields. Test multiline messages, structured fields, timestamps, stack traces and redaction rules with realistic samples. A platform that accepts logs but strips the fields needed for correlation may not meet the operational requirement.

3. Test correlation and the investigation workflow

Monitoring pays off during an investigation, not when a dashboard is merely displayed. Walk through a realistic failure scenario with each finalist.

  1. Open a dashboard showing a service’s request rate, latency and error rate.
  2. Select the time window in which the condition began and verify that the view preserves the same window as you move between signals.
  3. Open a representative trace or request detail from the affected period.
  4. Pivot to logs for the service, host or dependency involved, retaining the relevant identifiers and timestamps.
  5. Confirm that access controls, links and context remain intact when another team takes over the investigation.

Record how many clicks, searches and manual identifier copies are required. Also test an event that affects several services: the platform should help distinguish a shared dependency from multiple unrelated symptoms. Correlation quality depends on consistent resource names, timestamps and trace context, so include your existing naming and instrumentation conventions in the proof of concept.

4. Examine instrumentation portability

Instrumentation determines how much effort you carry if your architecture or monitoring supplier changes. Google Cloud documentation recommends an open, vendor-neutral framework such as OpenTelemetry instead of vendor- and product-specific APIs or client libraries.

  • Which signals—metrics, logs and traces—can be received?
  • Are the required language SDKs, collectors and exporters available for your applications?
  • Can you preserve resource attributes, service names and trace context?
  • Which advanced features still require a proprietary agent or API?
  • Can telemetry be sent to a second destination during migration or disaster recovery?

Framework support reduces dependence on product-specific instrumentation, but it does not make every feature interchangeable. Test the signals and integrations you actually use, including sampling, enrichment and alerting fields.

5. Treat dashboards and alerts as operational features

Dashboards that answer a question

Verify that teams can build charts and dashboards from the signals they need, apply consistent time ranges and filters, and share views with the right groups. Google Cloud documents charts, dashboards and alerting policies for metrics; equivalent capabilities should be demonstrated with your data rather than accepted from a product tour.

Ask whether a dashboard can show a service-level view and then expose the underlying host, container, dependency or deployment context. Check handling of missing data, high-cardinality labels and the difference between a genuine zero and an absent sample.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alerts that create useful work

Alerting should identify a condition that requires action, not merely report that a number changed. Evaluate:

  • Thresholds, rates, absence-of-data checks and multi-signal conditions.
  • Evaluation windows and delay handling so brief spikes do not create noise.
  • Grouping, deduplication and suppression during planned maintenance.
  • Routing by service, ownership, severity and time of day.
  • Runbook links, annotations and enough context for the first responder.
  • History showing when an alert opened, changed state and recovered.

Run a failure simulation and measure whether the alert arrives, contains the expected context, reaches the correct team and closes without manual cleanup. An alert that cannot be acted on is an operational liability even if the underlying detection is technically accurate.

6. Decide between native cloud monitoring and a third-party platform

There is no universal winner. The shape of your estate and toolchain should determine where you start.

Evaluation question Native cloud service Third-party platform
Cloud scope Often a natural starting point when one provider dominates and its services are central to the workload. Worth testing when telemetry must span multiple providers or many external components.
Managed-service coverage May have close integration with the provider’s own services; verify every required resource type. Compare the depth and maintenance of integrations across all providers and dependencies.
Existing tools Can reduce the number of systems for teams already operating in the provider console. May unify data from several clouds and operational systems; validate workflow integration rather than assuming it.
Instrumentation Check whether provider-specific APIs are required for important signals. Check OpenTelemetry and other portable approaches, plus any proprietary components needed for advanced features.
Billing model Review the provider’s current, service-specific data-volume and retention terms. Review how each signal, host, user, event or retention period is metered; compare the resulting model with native costs.

A single-cloud estate may find native services sufficient for its core resources, while a multi-cloud estate or one with substantial third-party dependencies may benefit from a consolidated view. AWS documentation describes both multiple native monitoring services and integrated observability partners; treat those as options to test against your coverage and workflow, not as an automatic recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Model cost from telemetry volume

Do not compare headline prices without estimating your data. Google Cloud states that its observability products are priced by data volume, and service-specific rates and billing details can change. Other platforms may meter different units, so normalize the assumptions before comparing.

Build a usage estimate

  1. Measure or estimate metric samples, log ingestion, trace spans and any other billable events for a representative day.
  2. Separate normal operation from peak incident volume; include burst behavior and autoscaling.
  3. Choose the retention period required for troubleshooting, audits and trend analysis.
  4. Record which data is sampled, filtered, archived or excluded before ingestion.
  5. Apply each candidate’s current pricing units to the same volumes and retention assumptions.
  6. Add operational costs: agents, collectors, storage exports, connectivity, administration and migration work.

Ask what happens when volume exceeds an included allowance, whether retention tiers are separate, and whether querying or alert evaluation adds charges. Request an itemized estimate that identifies the signal, unit, retention and region for every amount. Recheck the provider’s current pricing page before purchase because rates and billing rules are not static.

8. Check security, access and governance during the trial

Monitoring data can contain credentials, personal information, customer identifiers and internal topology. Require the candidate to demonstrate role-based access, audit records, encryption, redaction or filtering, and controls for exporting data. Confirm where data is stored and processed for the regions in which you operate.

Test least-privilege access for an on-call engineer, a development team and an auditor. Verify that a user can investigate the signals they need without automatically seeing unrelated tenants or sensitive fields. Include the process for deleting data, changing retention and disabling an integration when a workload is retired.

9. Run a proof of concept with a scorecard

A short, controlled trial is more reliable than a feature checklist. Use one representative service, one host or container workload, one managed dependency and at least one external integration. Send metrics, logs and traces through the instrumentation approach you expect to keep.

Score each candidate against weighted requirements. A practical scorecard can include:

Category Evidence to collect Pass condition
Coverage Inventory mapped to integrations, agents and custom work Every in-scope workload has a documented collection path.
Correlation Timed incident walkthrough Investigators can move from a symptom to related traces and logs without losing context.
Instrumentation OpenTelemetry and existing exporter test Required signals and attributes arrive without avoidable proprietary lock-in.
Alerting Failure simulation and notification test Correct team receives a deduplicated, actionable alert.
Cost Usage estimate using measured volumes Billing units and retention assumptions are explicit and reviewable.
Governance Role, audit, redaction and residency checks Security requirements pass before production data is enabled.

Keep the trial data and queries used for scoring. They provide a repeatable baseline when architecture, volume or pricing changes.

10. Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by the longest feature list

A platform can advertise every signal yet fail to collect one critical service or preserve the fields your responders need. Tie every requirement to a workload and a test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring short-lived and peak workloads

Ephemeral containers, serverless executions and incident spikes expose gaps that steady-state tests hide. Include them in coverage and cost estimates.

Assuming framework support equals portability

Confirm actual exporters, attributes, sampling behavior and alert fields. A framework logo alone does not prove that migration will be simple.

Creating alerts before defining ownership

Every production alert needs an owner, severity, route and response expectation. Build those rules while testing detection, not after deployment.

Using retention as a guess

Retention affects both investigative value and cost. Set periods from documented incident, compliance and trend requirements, then model the resulting volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. A concise buying checklist

  • Have we listed every cloud, managed service, VM, container, application and external dependency?
  • Can the platform collect the required metrics, logs and traces with usable context?
  • Can an investigator pivot among those signals during a real incident?
  • Does our preferred instrumentation approach, including OpenTelemetry where appropriate, work for every required language and workload?
  • Can teams build meaningful dashboards and alerts with routing, deduplication and maintenance controls?
  • Are native and third-party options being judged against the same estate and workflow?
  • Do we understand ingestion, retention, query and other billing units at expected and peak volume?
  • Have security, access, residency, redaction and audit requirements passed a hands-on test?
  • Does a proof of concept demonstrate these outcomes with representative data?

12. Make the decision

Select the platform that covers your real estate, supports the telemetry and investigation paths your operators use, preserves a portable instrumentation strategy, and produces predictable alerts and costs. If two candidates meet the functional requirements, prefer the one whose collection and billing model your team can explain clearly; that clarity is what keeps a monitoring program sustainable as workloads and volumes change.
