The right cloud GPU provider is the one that can run your specific model, in the required region, at a predictable total cost, with a recovery plan when capacity disappears or a job is interrupted. Start by defining the workload—single-host inference, small-scale training, or distributed foundation-model training—then verify GPU memory, host resources, networking, storage, capacity, software, commercial terms, and exit options.

A low advertised GPU-hour price is not enough. The usable price includes the virtual machine, storage, data transfer, orchestration, support, licenses, idle time, and the engineering cost of recovering from interruptions.

1. Define the workload before comparing providers

GPU requirements change sharply with model size, batch size, sequence length, latency target, and whether the job must run on one machine or many. Write a short workload specification before opening provider calculators. Include the framework and container image, model and checkpoint sizes, expected tokens or samples per second, maximum acceptable latency, training duration, region or data-residency requirement, and whether interruptions are acceptable.

Workload Typical infrastructure question What to verify
Single-host inference Can one instance hold the model and serve the target traffic? GPU memory, CPU and system RAM, inference framework support, latency, storage read speed, and autoscaling behavior.
Single-host training or fine-tuning Can the optimizer states, gradients, activations, and checkpoints fit on one host? GPU memory capacity, number of GPUs in the host, local interconnect, host RAM, checkpoint throughput, and restart behavior.
Distributed training Can multiple hosts exchange gradients fast enough to keep GPUs busy? GPU-to-GPU interconnect, cross-node bandwidth and latency, topology, scheduler limits, synchronized startup, and reservation or quota for the full cluster.
Large foundation-model pretraining Can the provider deliver a large, stable cluster for weeks or months? Later-generation accelerator availability, reserved capacity, high-speed scale-out networking, failure replacement, observability, and contract terms.

Google Cloud describes its A2 machines as suitable for smaller-model training and single-host inference, while later-generation A-series machines target large-cluster foundation-model pretraining and fine-tuning. That distinction illustrates why a provider comparison must begin with the job rather than a favorite GPU name.

Write measurable acceptance criteria

  • Set a throughput target such as tokens per second, images per second, or training steps per hour.
  • Set a latency target for the chosen percentile, for example p95, and define the request mix.
  • Specify the largest model, batch, and sequence length that must fit without out-of-memory failures.
  • Define a maximum restart or recovery time and the amount of work that may be lost.
  • Record the required geography, compliance boundary, and allowed data-transfer destinations.

2. Compare the complete compute configuration

A GPU model and its advertised memory are only part of an instance. Compare the accelerator count, GPU memory, CPU generation and core count, host memory, local storage, virtual-machine limits, and whether the GPUs are attached to one host or spread across hosts.

GPU memory and count

Memory capacity determines whether the model and its working state fit. In training, weights are accompanied by gradients, optimizer states, activations, and temporary buffers; quantization or parameter-efficient fine-tuning can change the requirement but should be measured with your actual software. For inference, reserve memory for the model, key-value cache, batching, and framework overhead.

More GPUs do not automatically produce proportional speed. A model that fits on one large-memory GPU may be cheaper and easier to operate than a sharded deployment. Conversely, a distributed job may require a specific number of GPUs per host to match its parallelism strategy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU, RAM, and host limits

Data preprocessing, tokenization, decompression, checkpoint assembly, and request handling can make the CPU the bottleneck while GPUs sit idle. Check system RAM for dataset caching and data-loader workers, and verify limits on attached disks, network interfaces, processes, and container volumes. A provider that offers the right accelerator with an undersized host can deliver poor real-world utilization.

Interconnect and topology

For multi-GPU training, ask whether GPUs communicate through a high-bandwidth local interconnect and how the topology maps to your parallelism. For multi-node jobs, verify the cross-node fabric, bandwidth, latency, and whether all nodes are placed in the same zone or placement group. A specification sheet does not establish model throughput; benchmark the actual model and batch or sequence profile when practical.

3. Evaluate the data path, not just the accelerator

Every training step follows a path from storage to host memory to GPU memory, and distributed training adds a synchronization path between GPUs. Measure or estimate each segment.

Storage performance and locality

  • Check sustained throughput for dataset reads and checkpoint writes, not only capacity.
  • Check IOPS and latency when workloads open many small files or database-like shards.
  • Keep data and compute in the same region when possible to reduce transfer time and charges.
  • Confirm whether the training image, model cache, and dataset can be mounted by every worker.

Google Cloud documentation warns that Local SSD is temporary. Data can be lost if an instance restarts, and attached Local SSD data is not recoverable after specified maintenance restarts. Use persistent storage for datasets, checkpoints, and artifacts that must survive a host event; treat local disks as disposable caches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network throughput and egress

Distributed jobs can spend more time exchanging gradients than computing them if the network is undersized or oversubscribed. Ask for guaranteed or expected bandwidth, topology details, traffic limits, and charges for traffic leaving the provider or region. Include model downloads, dataset synchronization, checkpoint replication, monitoring exports, and production API responses in the traffic estimate.

Benchmark the real job

Run a representative slice with the same framework, precision, batch size, sequence length, data format, and number of workers you will use in production. Record accelerator utilization, input-pipeline wait time, network utilization, step time, checkpoint duration, and cost per useful unit of work. Synthetic GPU tests can hide storage, orchestration, and communication bottlenecks.

4. Confirm capacity in the exact region and zone

A catalog entry is not a capacity guarantee. GPU models and configurations vary by region and zone, and some have limited capacity or require account-team approval. Check live availability for the exact GPU count, host type, zone, quota, and expected start date.

Questions to ask the provider

  • Is the requested accelerator currently provisionable in the required zone?
  • What quota must be approved, and how long does approval normally take?
  • Can the provider reserve capacity for the full training window?
  • What happens if one worker cannot be allocated when the job starts?
  • Which alternate zones or regions have compatible hardware and networking?

Plan a recovery route before committing. A second zone may have different prices or networking, and a second provider may require a different image, driver, or orchestration configuration. Recheck availability immediately before a purchase because capacity changes faster than product documentation.

5. Calculate total cost of ownership

Compare the cost of completed work, not an isolated GPU-hour. Google Cloud states that GPU usage is charged in addition to the VM machine cost. Its GPU price page lists regional GPU prices but excludes disk, images, networking, and VM instance pricing. Every quote is therefore configuration- and region-specific.

Build a line-item estimate

Cost component What to include
Compute GPU charges, VM machine type, CPU and RAM, operating-system or image fees, and any host minimums.
Storage Persistent disks, object storage, snapshots, checkpoint replicas, backup retention, and temporary staging space.
Networking Inter-zone traffic, cross-region transfer, internet egress, private connectivity, load balancing, and data ingestion.
Operations Managed Kubernetes or scheduler fees, logging, monitoring, artifact registries, autoscaling, and idle capacity.
Commercial terms Support plan, software or enterprise-AI license, reservations, commitments, minimum spend, and cancellation charges.

Use this basic model: total job cost = (provisioned hours × all-in hourly rate) + storage + data transfer + orchestration and support + license costs + recovery and idle capacity. Calculate both the optimistic run and a failure case that includes a restart, an extra checkpoint, or several hours of unused allocation.

Interpret on-demand, reserved, and spot prices

On-demand capacity is flexible but commonly costs more. Reserved or committed capacity can reduce the rate when utilization is predictable, but it creates lock-in and may not solve a regional capacity shortage. Spot or preemptible capacity can be substantially cheaper, but interruptions require checkpointing, restart automation, and a tolerance for variable completion time.

A historical reference illustrates why a single “cheapest provider” claim is unreliable. CAST AI’s 2025 Kubernetes Cost Benchmark Report, based on 2024 observations and selected equivalent configurations, reported the following average instance prices for an 8×A100 comparison:

Provider in CAST AI study Average on-demand price per hour Average spot price per hour
AWS $38.0374 $13.6306
GCP $31.3449 $11.9863
Azure $43.4270 $5.7092

These are study results for 2024 observations, not current quotes or a universal ranking. Instance configuration and the report’s price-sampling method affect the figures. Recalculate with each provider’s current calculator and your region, machine type, storage, transfer, and commitment assumptions.

6. Design for interruption and maintenance

GPU hosts can be reclaimed, fail, or be stopped for maintenance. Google Cloud notes that GPU instances stop during host maintenance; data on attached Local SSD is not recoverable after specified maintenance restarts. Your design should assume that a worker can disappear.

Checkpoint strategy

  1. Write checkpoints to durable persistent storage rather than only to local disks.
  2. Choose an interval based on the cost of recomputing lost work and the checkpoint write time.
  3. Keep at least one previous known-good checkpoint so a partial or corrupt write does not erase the recovery point.
  4. Test restoring on a fresh instance, including drivers, libraries, tokenizer files, and configuration.
  5. Record the global step, data-shard position, random seeds, optimizer state, and code or container digest.

For spot or preemptible runs, use a queue or scheduler that can request replacement capacity and resume automatically. Measure the interruption rate and replacement delay in the regions you intend to use; a lower spot rate is not economical if repeated evictions extend the project.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

7. Check software, images, and orchestration

Confirm support for your CUDA or equivalent accelerator stack, driver version, framework, container runtime, and communication libraries. Verify that the provider’s image is compatible with your model code and that you can pin versions rather than accepting automatic updates during a long run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managed versus self-managed operations

Approach Advantages Trade-offs
Provider-managed GPU service Faster provisioning, integrated monitoring, and less driver maintenance. Fewer low-level controls, platform-specific APIs, and possible service or orchestration fees.
Virtual machines with your own images Maximum control over drivers, containers, filesystems, and schedulers. You own patching, capacity automation, observability, and recovery engineering.
Managed Kubernetes Portable scheduling patterns, namespaces, and multi-tenant controls. Cluster management complexity and additional control-plane, networking, and storage costs.

NVIDIA’s cloud deployment guide, updated July 31, 2026, lists AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, OCI, Alibaba Cloud, and Tencent Cloud as supported environments for NVIDIA AI Enterprise. Its deployment table distinguishes standard instances, NVIDIA VM images, and managed Kubernetes. Do not assume the license is included: verify whether it is bundled, billed separately, or supplied through an existing agreement.

8. Compare security, compliance, and data governance

Identify where data, checkpoints, logs, and support snapshots are stored and processed. Compare encryption at rest and in transit, customer-managed keys, private networking, identity integration, audit logs, vulnerability response, tenant isolation, and deletion guarantees.

Questions for regulated or sensitive workloads

  • Can all persistent data remain in the required country, region, or regulatory boundary?
  • Are GPU hosts single-tenant, logically isolated, or available as dedicated capacity?
  • Which support personnel can access metadata, logs, or diagnostic bundles?
  • What certifications and contractual data-processing terms apply to the exact service?
  • Can you export and cryptographically delete model artifacts when the contract ends?

Check the scope of the service-level agreement. An uptime promise for the control plane may not cover GPU capacity, storage performance, network throughput, scheduled maintenance, or spot instances. Ask how incidents are credited and whether credits compensate for the business impact of a missed training window.

9. Evaluate support and day-to-day operations

Support quality matters most when a cluster is reserved but unusable. Compare response targets by severity, escalation to GPU and networking specialists, status transparency, and availability of runbooks. Confirm whether support can help with quota, image, driver, scheduler, and capacity failures or only with billing.

Require observability that exposes GPU utilization, memory errors, throttling, temperature, host health, storage latency, network throughput, job queue time, and checkpoint age. Alerts should distinguish an application failure from a lost host so automation can take the correct action.

10. Preserve portability and an exit route

Reduce migration risk by packaging the application as a reproducible container, pinning dependencies, storing infrastructure definitions in version control, and keeping model artifacts in formats supported by more than one runtime. Separate data, checkpoints, and orchestration logic from provider-specific APIs where practical.

Estimate the cost and time to move a representative checkpoint and dataset to another provider. Include egress charges, staging storage, image conversion, driver changes, network-topology changes, and revalidation of numerical results. A provider that is slightly cheaper but impossible to leave can be more expensive over the project’s life.

11. A practical provider-shortlisting procedure

  1. Describe the job. Record model size, framework, precision, batch and sequence profile, throughput or latency target, training duration, GPU count, and interruption tolerance.
  2. Create a minimum configuration. Specify GPU memory, host RAM and CPU, local and persistent storage, interconnect, network bandwidth, and required region or zone.
  3. Check live capacity. Verify quota, exact zone availability, reservation options, lead time, and an alternate placement.
  4. Run a representative benchmark. Use the real container and data path; capture throughput, utilization, step time, checkpoint time, and failure recovery.
  5. Build three cost cases. Price on-demand, commitment or reservation, and spot or preemptible operation, including storage, transfer, support, licenses, and idle time.
  6. Test failure handling. Kill a worker or simulate maintenance, restore from a durable checkpoint, and measure time to resume.
  7. Review contracts and governance. Confirm SLA scope, support response, data location, isolation, compliance, licensing, minimum commitments, and termination terms.
  8. Document the exit plan. Export a container, checkpoint, dataset sample, and infrastructure definition to a second environment before committing to a long contract.

12. Common selection mistakes

  • Choosing by GPU name alone: the host, interconnect, storage, and scheduler may limit performance.
  • Using a product page as a capacity guarantee: the needed GPU may be unavailable in the required zone or blocked by quota.
  • Comparing only GPU-hour rates: VM, disk, transfer, orchestration, support, licensing, and idle time can dominate the bill.
  • Keeping the only checkpoint on local storage: a restart or maintenance event can erase it.
  • Assuming spot is free of operational cost: evictions increase completion time and engineering work.
  • Ignoring software licensing: enterprise AI distributions may require a separate license.
  • Skipping a real benchmark: published specifications do not predict throughput for your model and data pipeline.
  • Locking in before testing migration: egress, incompatible images, and provider-specific orchestration can delay an exit.

How to make the final decision

Score each candidate against the same workload specification. Eliminate any option that fails a hard requirement—memory, geography, compliance, capacity, or software compatibility—before weighting price. Among the survivors, compare cost per completed training step or served request, recovery time after interruption, operational effort, and the strength of your fallback route. The best provider is workload- and location-specific, not a permanent industry winner.
