There is no mandatory first Star Wars game. The best starting point depends on the experience you want: a connected Jedi story, a humorous tour of the films, an open-world scoundrel adventure, large multiplayer battles, or starfighter combat. If you want one clear story path, start with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, then play Jedi: Survivor. The games are related, but you do not need to complete one to launch the other.
Choose your first game by the kind of play you want
The official game descriptions point to distinct experiences rather than one continuous franchise campaign. Use this guide to match your priority to a sensible starting title.

This is a genre guide, not a ranking. The official catalog establishes each game’s format and setting; which style you enjoy is personal.

What Fallen Order establishes
Fallen Order is a story-led, single-player, third-person action-adventure. You play a Jedi Padawan who survived the purge of Order 66. The setting follows the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Lightsaber fighting, Force abilities and exploration are built around that narrative rather than an online service.
#1 Best Overall
- Cinematic, immersive combat Jedi: Fallen order delivers the fantasy of becoming a Jedi through its innovative lightsaber combat system striking, parrying, dodging partnered with a suite of powerful force abilities you’ll need to leverage to overcome obstacles that stand in your way
- A new Jedi story begins: As a former Padawan on the run from the Empire, you must complete your training before Imperial Inquisitors discover your plan to revive the Jedi order
- The Galaxy Awaits: Ancient forests, windswept rock faces, and haunted jungles are all unique biomes you’ll explore in Jedi: Fallen order, with the freedom to decide when and where you go next
- A galaxy spanning adventure awaits in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen order, a new 3rd person action adventure title from Respawn Entertainment
Because it introduces Cal Kestis, the people around him and the post-Order 66 situation, it is the clearest continuity entry for someone who wants to understand the later game without relying on summaries.
What Survivor changes
Jedi: Survivor continues Cal’s story five years after Fallen Order. EA says it can stand alone, so starting there is possible if you mainly want the newer chapter. You should nevertheless expect references to earlier events and relationships. Playing Fallen Order first turns those references into story progression instead of background information.
The practical order is:
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Progress does not carry from one game into the other. Treat the second game as a separate purchase and save system, not as an expansion that imports your completed file.

- You already know Cal’s earlier story and want to move directly to the sequel.
- You are choosing based on a platform or edition that offers only Survivor.
- You prefer the sequel’s presentation and accept learning earlier events through context.
If none of those applies, the first game is the better starting point for continuity.
There is no single franchise-wide story order
Unlike the two-game Cal Kestis sequence, the broader Star Wars catalog spans unrelated eras, formats and protagonists. The official descriptions do not establish a required order that places every game into one timeline. You can therefore select a game by genre without first completing the others.
Rank #2
- This narratively-driven single player game puts you in the role of a Jedi Padawan who narrowly escaped the purge of order 66 following the events of episode 3: Revenge of the Sith
- Complete your training, develop powerful force abilities, and master the art of the iconic lightsabre
- Iconic locations, weapons, gear, and enemies in addition to a roster of fresh characters, locations, creatures, droids and adversaries to Star Wars
- Fight for survival while exploring the mysteries of a long-extinct civilization
- Pre-order Star Wars Jedi: Fallen order to outfit yourself with cosmetic equipment for your lightsaber and droid companion
Outlaws has a specific film-era placement: its story occurs between Episodes V and VI. That tells you where it sits in the fictional timeline, not that you must play another game before it. The Skywalker Saga retells the major events of all nine Skywalker films in LEGO form, so it is a broad film overview rather than a continuation of Cal’s story. The Old Republic is set more than 3,000 years before the classic films and likewise stands apart from the modern Jedi games.
What each starting option is best at
Fallen Order: a guided, character-first adventure
Choose this when you want a campaign with a defined protagonist and a clear single-player arc. Its combination of lightsaber combat, Force powers and exploration makes it a natural choice for players whose main appeal is being a Jedi after the fall of the Republic. It is not the correct first pick if your priority is competitive multiplayer or piloting a ship.
Recommended Free Tools
Survivor: the next step for Cal
Choose this when you specifically want the continuation of Cal Kestis’s journey. Its standalone status lowers the barrier to entry, but the five-year time jump and returning characters have more impact when you have played Fallen Order.
The Skywalker Saga: accessible movie-style comedy
Choose this for a lighter, broadly familiar introduction. It covers moments from Episodes I through IX with LEGO humor. It is useful when your goal is to revisit the central films in game form rather than follow a new character in a darker post-Order 66 story.
Outlaws: open-world freedom and underworld factions
Choose this if the appeal is playing a non-Jedi scoundrel. Kay Vess and Nix operate among crime syndicates between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Its setting offers a different perspective from the Jedi-focused games and does not require a Cal Kestis playthrough.
Battlefront II: battles first, story second
Choose this when you want large-scale fights involving the major cinematic eras. The game also contains a single-player story, but its defining distinction in the catalog is the combination of multiplayer battlefields and era-spanning factions. Make sure your platform supports the online features you intend to use.
Squadrons: cockpit-focused combat
Choose this when the fantasy is flying a starfighter rather than fighting on foot. The game uses a first-person viewpoint for ship combat and includes both multiplayer dogfights and a solo campaign. It is a specialized choice, not a substitute for a Jedi action-adventure.
The Old Republic: an MMO-scale commitment
Choose this when you want a persistent, story-driven online role-playing experience set thousands of years before the films. Lucasfilm describes a free-to-play option. Because it is an MMO, plan for online account requirements and a much broader structure than a self-contained campaign.
Check platform, edition and store requirements before buying
Fallen Order availability
EA’s product page links Fallen Order to Windows through the EA app, Xbox, PlayStation, Steam and Epic storefronts. The exact edition and terms vary by storefront. The displayed purchase terms for the listed version include an internet connection, an EA account, acceptance of EA terms and installation of the EA app. Verify the current listing for the platform and region you will actually use; a requirement shown for one store or edition should not be assumed to apply identically everywhere.
PlayStation’s US listing identifies both PS4 and PS5 versions. If you own one generation of console, confirm that the product page names your hardware before paying, particularly when choosing a digital cross-generation bundle or a physical disc.

Rank #4
- Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is a cinematic, interactive adventure that lets you step inside a galaxy far, far away
- Experience this thrilling three-part series in virtual reality
- Descend into Darth Vader’s mysterious fortress alongside new allies and encounter fearsome enemies, including the Sith Lord himself
- Be at the center of a story in which you hold the key to the galaxy’s salvation… or destruction
- An authentic Star Wars story that takes place between Episode III and Episode IV, which gives a personal look at Darth Vader himself
Survivor and other games
Check the current platform page for Survivor, Outlaws, The Skywalker Saga, Battlefront II, Squadrons or The Old Republic rather than assuming that every title appears on every console, PC store or subscription. Edition names can change what is included, and online games can impose additional account or network conditions.
Digital, physical and regional details
- Confirm the platform family (PC, PlayStation or Xbox) and the exact generation.
- Check whether the listing is digital or physical and whether a disc is usable in your console model.
- Read the regional store page for language, age rating, currency and availability.
- For multiplayer titles, verify that your platform’s online service and an account are active.
- Check the edition contents before assuming that a bundle includes a sequel, downloadable content or a classic-game collection.
Accessibility settings to review before starting
The PlayStation US listing for Fallen Order identifies adjustable difficulty, simplified quick-time events, subtitles, control reminders and the ability to pause during offline play. These are useful options to inspect before the opening mission, especially if reaction-based prompts, reading visibility or uninterrupted sessions affect how you play.
Those features are documented for the PlayStation listing and should not be treated as a promise that every PC, Xbox or other release uses identical labels or menus. Open the accessibility and gameplay sections on your own platform’s product page and in the game itself.
A practical decision path
- Want Cal Kestis and a connected narrative? Start with Fallen Order; follow it with Survivor.
- Want to replay the film saga with jokes and simple structure? Start with The Skywalker Saga.
- Want an open-world outlaw perspective? Start with Outlaws.
- Want team battles across recognizable eras? Start with Battlefront II.
- Want only starfighter combat? Start with Squadrons.
- Want a long-term online role-playing world set far before the films? Start with The Old Republic.
If two choices appeal equally, use platform compatibility and whether you want solo or online play as the tie-breakers. No preliminary game is required for the genre-based options.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming every game shares one protagonist
Cal Kestis, Kay Vess, LEGO’s film characters, faction soldiers and starfighter pilots belong to different experiences. Buying one title does not provide a chronological key to the others.
Best Value
Treating Survivor as a mandatory sequel purchase
Survivor can stand alone according to EA. The reason to play Fallen Order first is continuity and context, not a technical unlock requirement.
Buying from the wrong platform listing
Storefronts, regions and editions can differ. Confirm the hardware, format and account terms immediately before checkout, especially for Fallen Order, whose listed requirements vary by purchase route.
Choosing a multiplayer game for a solo-only plan
Battlefront II and Squadrons include solo content, but their catalog descriptions emphasize multiplayer battles or dogfights. If you want a primarily narrative solo journey, the Jedi games are the more direct match.
Bottom line: start with the experience, not a universal order
For a new player seeking one recommended path, play Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and then Jedi: Survivor. For everyone else, choose by format: The Skywalker Saga for all-film LEGO humor, Outlaws for an open-world scoundrel story, Battlefront II for era-spanning battles, Squadrons for first-person starfighters or The Old Republic for an MMO set thousands of years before the films. Verify the current platform and edition listing before purchase.
