For a trouble-free Tirumala visit, arrive in the traditional clothing specified by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), use the entry time printed on your darshan ticket, and follow the temple’s conduct and security rules. The details below reflect TTD guidance and notices available on 13 October 2026; ticket conditions and security instructions can change, so check the notice attached to your booking before travelling.
Check your ticket and clothing before leaving
Your ticket category determines which timing instruction applies. TTD’s 10 March 2026 notice specifically covers devotees holding SSD tokens and Rs. 300 Special Entry Darshan (SED) tickets: they may enter the queue only at the allotted time. That notice should not be treated as a universal rule for every darshan type. Read the category, date and time on your own ticket and verify any newer instruction on TTD’s official booking or news pages.
Pack clothing that matches TTD’s stated traditional dress, leave prohibited articles at your accommodation, and allow time for the journey to the checkpoint and queue location. TTD recommends arranging travel and accommodation well in advance and warns pilgrims not to use touts for rooms or darshan.

Tirumala dress code
TTD’s official dress-code page says the traditional code was introduced in 2013 to improve the spiritual ambience. The page identifies categories in which it was first implemented and later extended, but it does not provide a current, category-by-category enforcement matrix for every ticket or special service. Treat the clothing below as TTD’s stated preferred dress and check the conditions attached to your particular booking.

| Visitor | TTD wording | Practical packing choice |
|---|---|---|
| Men | “Dhoti or pyjamas with upper cloth.” | A cotton dhoti, or a loose pyjama/kurta-pyjama outfit, with a separate upper cloth. The upper cloth is part of the stated formulation. |
| Women | “Saree or half-saree with blouse or churidar with pyjama and upper cloth.” | A saree or half-saree with its blouse, or a churidar with pyjama and an upper cloth. Choose a breathable fabric and secure the drape for walking and queuing. |
How the 2013 policy is described
TTD says traditional dress was initially implemented for Arjitha Sevas and extended to VIP pilgrims seeking break darshan and to general pilgrims taking Rs. 300 and Rs. 50 darshan. Those historical categories explain the origin of the policy; they do not prove that every queue or newly created ticket type is enforced identically today. If your ticket or a current TTD notice gives a more specific requirement, follow that instruction.
Comfort and family planning
Traditional clothing must still be practical for a long day. Select non-transparent, breathable material, wear secure footwear for the approach (and be prepared to remove it where required), and carry a spare upper cloth or replacement garment for children. Avoid relying on a jacket, scarf or casual shirt as a substitute unless current TTD staff guidance confirms it is acceptable; the safest preparation is to bring the items named on the dress-code page.
Entry timing and darshan queues
SSD tokens and Rs. 300 SED tickets
In a notice dated 10 March 2026, TTD stated that devotees with SSD tokens and Rs. 300 SED tickets are allowed into queue lines only at their allotted time. Its wording is explicit: “Devotees who arrive earlier or later than their allotted time slot will not be allowed into the queue lines.” Arriving hours early does not guarantee an advantage, and arriving after the slot can mean losing access to that queue.

Use the time printed or assigned on the ticket as the anchor for your journey. Allow for road delays, parking or transport from your accommodation, security checks and the walk to the correct queue point, but do not attempt to join the line before the permitted window. Keep the ticket and identification documents used for the booking readily available.
Do not apply one slot rule to every darshan
The March notice names SSD and Rs. 300 SED specifically. It does not establish a single timing rule for all darshan categories, sevas, privileges or future ticket products. For a different booking, follow the instructions on that ticket and the latest TTD notice. Current availability, prices and slot arrangements are volatile, so use TTD’s official information rather than an old social-media post or an intermediary’s promise.
Book ahead and avoid intermediaries
TTD advises pilgrims to reserve travel and accommodation well in advance. It also cautions visitors not to approach touts for accommodation or darshan. A person offering to “adjust” a slot, bypass a line or obtain a room for an extra payment is not a substitute for an official booking channel. Keep confirmation messages, ticket numbers and identity documents in your own possession and resolve discrepancies with TTD personnel at an official counter.

Temple etiquette: what TTD asks pilgrims to do
TTD’s Do’s and Don’ts in Tirumala page combines devotional practice with crowd management. These instructions apply to conduct in and around the temple and are intended to protect the sanctity of the shrine and the experience of other pilgrims.
Prepare before entering
- Bathe and wear clean clothes before entering the sanctum shrine.
- Follow the procedures given by temple staff and wait for your turn instead of attempting to move ahead.
- Remove footwear in and around the temple premises as directed. Plan where you will leave it and do not carry it into a restricted area.
Conduct inside the temple
- Keep silence and concentrate on the deity. TTD’s guidance mentions chanting “Om Namo Sri Venkatesaya” inside.
- Respect temple customs, fellow pilgrims and staff. Do not rush the queue, create a nuisance, use violence or behave harshly.
- Do not prostrate inside the temple, spit, encourage beggars or otherwise obstruct movement.
- Do not discard prasadam or teertham. Consume or dispose of them respectfully according to the directions available at the site.
Food, drink and personal items
- Do not smoke or consume liquor or other intoxicants while in Tirumala.
- Do not eat non-vegetarian food while in Tirumala.
- Do not wear flowers at the Tirumala temple; TTD explains that flowers from the sacred Seven Hills are for the Lord.
- Do not wear head guards such as helmets, caps, turbans or hats inside temple premises.
Offerings and money
TTD says offerings should be deposited only in the Hundi. Do not hand cash, jewellery or other offerings to an unofficial collector, tout or person claiming special access. If you are unsure where an offering belongs, ask uniformed temple personnel rather than following a stranger.
Prohibited items, weapons and recording devices
Security restrictions are updated through TTD notices. The examples below show what to leave behind, but they are not a promise that the list is exhaustive or permanent.

| Item or category | What the available TTD guidance says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Cigarettes, tobacco, liquor and pan | A TTD appeal dated 19 July 2019 lists these among banned items. | Do not carry them to Tirumala; the older release is illustrative, not a complete current inventory. |
| Meat | The same 2019 appeal lists meat, while the current conduct page says not to eat non-vegetarian food in Tirumala. | Leave it out of your luggage and do not consume it during the visit. |
| Playing cards | Included in the 2019 examples of banned items. | Do not bring them into the temple area. |
| Firearms and explosive material | The 2019 appeal lists revolvers and other explosive material. The current Do’s and Don’ts page says licensed weapons and ammunition are prohibited. | Do not carry them into the temple area. The current page instructs anyone possessing licensed weapons or ammunition to declare them at the Alipiri checkpoint and submit the relevant documents; follow checkpoint staff instructions. |
| Pets and “miming birds” | Listed in the 2019 TTD appeal. | Make alternative care arrangements before travelling. |
| Drones, smart glasses and other recording devices | A TTD release dated 1 September 2026 says these are strictly prohibited in the sacred temple area for security and privacy. | Leave them behind. The release does not enumerate every device or describe storage arrangements, so do not assume an item can be deposited at the gate. |
Read the current TTD security notice before packing specialist eyewear, cameras or unmanned aircraft. A phone or ordinary camera is not automatically covered by the wording of every notice, but “other recording devices” is broad; obey the screening staff and any posted restriction rather than arguing over a technical definition.

If you are early or late
For an SSD or Rs. 300 SED booking, do not force entry to the queue. Show the ticket to the designated TTD staff and ask what official option, if any, is available. The March 2026 notice says early or late arrivals will not be allowed into those lines, so a private promise that someone can admit you should be treated as suspicious.

Remain respectful, step aside if directed and show the ticket category. TTD’s dress page is the reference for the traditional combinations, while current enforcement can depend on the service booked. Do not change clothes in a queue or block other pilgrims; use an appropriate facility or return with compliant clothing if staff require it.

If you discover a restricted item in your bag
Do not conceal it or pass it to another pilgrim. Tell checkpoint personnel and follow their directions. For licensed weapons or ammunition, the current TTD page specifically mentions declaration at Alipiri with relevant documents. For drones, smart glasses and other recording equipment, the September 2026 notice establishes prohibition in the sacred area but does not guarantee that the gate will store the item.
