Choose a facility that keeps big cats in secure, spacious enclosures without public contact, breeding, or animal trading; then follow every posted rule, stay behind barriers, keep children supervised, and confirm practical details directly with the venue before you travel.
Start with the park’s welfare standards, not its photo opportunities
A “sanctuary” label does not by itself prove that a facility is responsible. WWF’s summer 2024 guidance recommends screening out attractions that let visitors touch big cats or pose with cubs. It also identifies three basic tests: no public contact with big cats of any age, no breeding at a genuine sanctuary, and enclosures that provide adequate space and security.
The Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance describes a true sanctuary as a refuge providing lifelong care for abused, neglected, or unwanted big cats. Its stated indicators include no breeding, buying, selling, or trading of animals and no public contact. The Alliance says membership and accreditation from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) are signs of high animal-care and safety standards. Treat those as useful signals rather than a universal guarantee; inspect the facility’s own policies and explanations as well.

Questions to answer before booking
- Can visitors touch, hold, bottle-feed, or enter an enclosure with a big cat? If yes, choose another venue.
- Does the facility explain that it does not breed, buy, sell, or trade the animals in its care?
- Are enclosures visibly secure, with enough room for animals to move away from people?
- Does the park publish clear rules about barriers, noise, feeding, children, photography, and restricted areas?
- Can it explain where the cats came from and what lifelong care means at that site?
These questions help distinguish an educational visit from a commercial encounter built around handling animals.

Understand the local rules and what they do—and do not—tell you
Regulation varies by country and jurisdiction. In England and Scotland, the UK government’s “Standards of modern zoo practice” cover animal welfare, public safety, conservation, and education. The government page updated on 20 January 2026 says the 2012 standards remain in effect through 23 May 2027; updated standards for Great Britain take effect on 24 May 2027. That timetable is specific to Great Britain and should not be treated as a worldwide benchmark.
Legal licensing is only one part of your decision. A park can meet a regulatory baseline while still offering policies you may consider unsuitable, so compare its public-contact, breeding, trade, enclosure, and transparency policies directly.
Check logistics before you leave home
Opening times, tour schedules, capacity, food rules, photography permissions, accessibility, and arrival procedures differ between parks and can change. Read the chosen venue’s current visitor page, then check again on the day of travel for weather or operational notices.
Build a venue-specific checklist
- Hours and entry: Confirm opening time, last admission, advance booking requirements, parking or shuttle arrangements, and where to check in.
- Tours: Ask whether a guide is required, how long the visit lasts, the maximum group size, and whether late arrivals can join.
- Age limits: Verify minimum ages for tours, feeding demonstrations, vehicle rides, or any other activity involving close viewing.
- Food and drink: Check whether you may bring water, whether cafés are available, and where eating is permitted.
- Photography: Find out whether personal photographs are allowed, whether flash is prohibited, and whether commercial filming needs written permission.
- Access: Ask about path surfaces, slopes, wheelchairs, mobility scooters, toilets, seating, and indoor shelter. Do not assume that an “accessible” label covers every enclosure or route.
- Weather: Confirm cancellation or rescheduling policies for heat, storms, flooding, or extreme cold.
A published example is not a universal schedule
The Big Cat Sanctuary’s reviewed group-tour FAQ lists 90-minute tours beginning at 1:30 p.m., groups of up to 10 guests, and site access from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those figures describe that venue’s information at the time it was checked in 2026; reconfirm them before relying on them. Another park may have different hours, group limits, or no guided tour at all.
Prepare clothing and a small day bag
Wear comfortable shoes with secure soles. The Big Cat Sanctuary warns that ground away from its main path can be uneven, so sturdy footwear is a sensible precaution there; it is not a universal dress code. Choose clothing suitable for the forecast and expect to spend time outdoors unless the venue confirms substantial indoor viewing.

A compact pair of binoculars can help you observe animals without trying to move closer. Binoculars do not permit you to approach a fence, cross a barrier, call an animal, or ignore a guide’s instructions. Pack only what the venue allows, and keep bags, straps, and loose objects away from rails and viewing gaps.
Follow barriers and staff instructions without exception
Barriers are part of the enclosure, not an invitation to lean over for a better photograph. The Big Cat Sanctuary prohibits direct animal contact, climbing fences or gates, and entering unauthorized areas. Smithsonian’s National Zoo likewise tells visitors not to disturb exhibit animals or cross barriers.

- Remain on permitted paths and in the area identified by staff or your guide.
- Keep hands, phones, cameras, and personal items on your side of every barrier.
- Do not enter a staff-only gate, service road, feeding area, or enclosure, even if it appears unattended.
- If a barrier is damaged, a gate is open, or another visitor is behaving unsafely, move away and alert staff immediately.
Do not assume that a calm-looking cat is safe to approach. Big cats can move quickly, and the animal’s apparent distance or mood does not change the facility’s safety boundary.
Keep noise low and never try to attract an animal
Do not shout, whistle, bang on glass, imitate calls, wave food, or use a phone speaker to make a cat look toward you. LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary tells visitors that its big cats are sensitive to noise and asks them to keep voices low and noise to a minimum so the animals can remain calm and comfortable.
LIONSROCK also instructs visitors not to feed free-roaming animals, approach fences, call out to the cats, or encourage them to come closer. Those are that sanctuary’s rules, but the underlying principle applies broadly: use the exact instructions of the park you are visiting and avoid any behavior intended to provoke a response.

Never feed or touch a big cat
Feeding changes animal behavior and can create dangerous expectations around people. Do not offer food, treats, packaging, or drinks unless a staff member gives you a specific, supervised instruction—and do not interpret a supervised feeding demonstration as permission to feed independently.

WWF’s guidance is explicit that visitors should avoid public contact with big cats of any age. The Big Cat Sanctuary’s health and safety policy states: “No direct contact with any animal is permitted.”
Plan specifically for children
Children should remain within sight and under an adult’s active supervision for the entire visit, including queues, cafés, toilets, vehicle transfers, and viewing platforms. A child who is curious about the animals may move toward a rail before an adult notices, so position yourself between the child and the barrier when practical.
The Big Cat Sanctuary and LIONSROCK require children to be accompanied or supervised by adults. Some Big Cat Sanctuary feeding experiences require children to remain outside the stand-off feeding area with a supervising adult. Confirm age limits and participation rules before paying for an activity; an adult present on site may still be unable to take a child into a particular area.
Give children a simple briefing
- “We watch; we do not touch.”
- “The fence stays between us and the animals.”
- “Quiet voices help the cats stay calm.”
- “Only staff decide when food is given.”
- “If we lose sight of our group, we stop and tell an adult.”
Keep snacks and toys packed away where the park requires it. Do not let children run, climb rails, tap windows, or imitate animal sounds.

Stay with the group during tours and demonstrations
If the venue assigns a guide, remain with the group and follow the route in the order given. A guide may know which doors, gates, or paths are temporarily closed and may position visitors at a safe stand-off distance. Do not leave to seek a closer view or return to an enclosure after the group has moved on.
Ask before taking part in any feeding talk or demonstration. Clarify where you and children may stand, what objects must be put away, and what signal means the activity has ended. Never enter a feeding stand, service area, or vehicle loading zone without explicit staff direction.
Handle photography, food, and personal conduct carefully
Personal photography policies vary. LIONSROCK permits personal photos but requires prior permission for commercial photography and does not allow visitors to bring food or beverages onto its property. Another park may permit drinks, prohibit flash, restrict tripods, or ban all photography in particular areas. Check the chosen venue rather than copying another park’s policy.
- Turn off flash unless staff explicitly say it is permitted.
- Do not use a drone, selfie stick, or extended camera arm near an enclosure unless the venue authorizes it in writing.
- Never block a path or press against a viewing window to obtain a shot.
- Do not photograph staff or other visitors without permission.
- Keep alcohol, smoking, vaping, and food within the areas the venue designates—or leave them at home if prohibited.
If you are unsure, stop and ask
Rules can differ between a general viewing area and a special experience. If a sign is unclear, ask a staff member before proceeding. When a visitor, child, or companion crosses a boundary, call staff rather than attempting to intervene physically near an enclosure.

Use a comparison framework when choosing between parks
When several facilities are available, score them on the same questions instead of choosing from photographs or marketing language alone.
| Decision area | What to look for | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Public contact | No touching, holding, cub-photo sessions, or visitor entry into animal spaces | Any routine handling promoted as a feature |
| Breeding and trade | Clear statement that the sanctuary does not breed, buy, sell, or trade animals | Unexplained breeding, sales, or animal transfers |
| Enclosures | Secure boundaries and enough space for animals to move away from visitors | Weak barriers, crowding, or encouragement to approach fences |
| Visitor rules | Written guidance on noise, feeding, children, paths, photography, and restricted areas | Little or no safety information before arrival |
| Oversight | Transparent welfare information, with credentials such as Alliance membership or GFAS accreditation considered as signals | Credentials presented as the only evidence of quality |
No single international ranking system establishes that one wildlife park is best for every visitor. Use the facility’s policies, transparency, and observed conditions together.
What a responsible visit looks like
You arrive knowing the hours and entry process, hear the safety briefing, and remain behind barriers on the permitted route. Your children stay beside an adult, your phone and snacks stay within the venue’s rules, and the cats are allowed to choose whether to be visible. You leave without touching, feeding, calling to, or otherwise manipulating an animal’s behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat approach protects visitors and animals while supporting facilities that emphasize lifelong care, secure enclosures, and education rather than direct-contact entertainment.
