Sometimes—but a carrier lock limits which eSIMs a phone can use. A locked phone may accept an eSIM from the carrier that locked it, but a different carrier’s eSIM generally requires the original carrier to unlock the device. The phone must also support eSIM and be compatible with the new carrier.
What a carrier lock means for eSIMs
eSIM support and carrier-unlock status are separate. eSIM is a way to provision a mobile line; it does not remove a carrier restriction. A phone can have eSIM hardware and still be limited to the carrier that locked it.
That distinction matters when you try to add a line from another provider. Verizon says a locked device blocks dual-SIM activation when the two lines are from different carriers. T-Mobile also lists a provider lock as a possible reason eSIM activation fails. Verizon’s dual-SIM guidance and T-Mobile’s eSIM troubleshooting describe these issues.

Using the carrier that locked the phone
A lock does not necessarily prevent the phone from using an eSIM from the carrier that imposed the restriction. The carrier’s setup and eligibility requirements still apply.

Adding a different carrier’s eSIM
Expect the phone to need an unlock before it can use another carrier’s eSIM. If activation fails, do not assume the eSIM profile or QR code is the problem: T-Mobile’s troubleshooting identifies a device lock as one possible cause.
Roaming is not the same as switching carriers
Roaming lets your existing carrier’s SIM or eSIM use another provider’s network under a roaming arrangement. It does not mean the phone is unlocked to accept a separate eSIM from that provider. Verizon explicitly distinguishes roaming from using another carrier’s service: Verizon’s explanation of dual-SIM and roaming and Verizon’s device-unlocking policy.

How to check before activating an eSIM
- Identify the exact phone model and regional version. Confirm that this particular device supports eSIM; support can vary by model and market. For iPhone, T-Mobile’s troubleshooting page points to Apple’s eSIM support information: T-Mobile eSIM troubleshooting.
- Check the carrier-lock status. Look in the phone’s settings or ask the original carrier. A status display can show whether a lock is present, but it does not establish whether the carrier will approve an unlock.
- Ask the original carrier or seller about eligibility. The carrier that locked the phone—or, in some cases, the seller—handles the unlock route. Verizon says a device locked by another carrier must be unlocked by that carrier if eligible. T-Mobile advises users whose activation error indicates a lock to contact the seller. - Verify compatibility and activation with the destination carrier. An unlock only removes the carrier restriction; it does not guarantee that the phone’s model or network configuration is supported. Use the destination carrier’s current compatibility checker and follow its eSIM activation steps.
- If you only need travel service, decide whether roaming is enough. Roaming on your existing plan and installing a separate travel-provider eSIM are different options. A lock can block the latter even if roaming works.
Why an eSIM activation may fail
For iPhone, T-Mobile describes Error 501 this way: “This means your iPhone is either locked or doesn’t have an eSIM.” The error therefore points to two different checks: confirm the phone supports eSIM, then confirm its lock status. - The phone is locked: Contact the carrier that locked it or the seller and ask whether it is eligible for unlocking.
- The model lacks eSIM support: A carrier unlock cannot add eSIM capability. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and regional version.
- The destination carrier does not support the model: Ask that carrier to confirm compatibility and activation requirements for the exact device.
Who can unlock the phone?
Contact the original carrier, or the seller if the carrier directs you there. The rules and eligibility conditions vary by carrier and market. Verizon says a phone locked by another carrier must be unlocked by that carrier if eligible; T-Mobile directs users to contact the seller when its troubleshooting identifies a lock; and AT&T provides a device-unlock request route. An unlock tool or accessory is not a substitute for approval from the responsible carrier or seller.
