Mists of Pandaria Classic is already live. Blizzard launched it on July 21, 2025, and its launch announcement says access is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. You do not need to make a Pandaren or play a Monk: every supported race and class can enter the expansion. The important preparation is knowing which details belong to the 2025 launch and which features arrived in later updates through 2026.
Start with access and the current state of the game
Blizzard’s launch announcement identifies an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time as the requirement for Mists of Pandaria Classic access. The expansion is not an upcoming release: it launched on July 21, 2025. If you are returning after an earlier Classic phase, update the game client, sign in to the correct World of Warcraft account, and check the current character-selection and realm information before planning a route.
The launch announcement is still useful for understanding the expansion’s shape, but it is not a complete description of the live game in October 2026. Mists of Pandaria Classic received multiple content updates after launch, and Blizzard was still publishing maintenance notices for the mode on October 6, 2026. The exact regional phase, raid-unlock state, and shop availability on any particular day should therefore be confirmed in the current client or in-game notices.
Choose the right way to begin
New character or returning character?

This is a practical choice rather than a permanent commitment. You can experience Pandaren content on one character and continue an older character on another. Blizzard’s material does not establish current prices or availability for optional character boosts, so do not assume a boost is required or currently offered in a particular region.

Pandaren are an option, not a requirement
The pre-patch made Pandaren playable. A new Pandaren begins on the Wandering Isle, and Blizzard described a decision there to join either the Alliance or the Horde as the character enters the conflict on Pandaria. That starting story is unique, but choosing Pandaren is not necessary to access the expansion. Other races use their normal starting routes and can travel to Pandaria when eligible.
Monks are a new class choice
The same transition made Monks playable and introduced three specializations: Windwalker for damage, Mistweaver for healing, and Brewmaster for tanking. The presence of a Monk does not change the access requirement, and you are not expected to play one to see the expansion’s content. Choose a Monk if you want to learn those three role options; otherwise, your existing class remains a valid way to enter Pandaria.
Understand what the pre-patch changed
If you last played before the Mists of Pandaria transition, the pre-patch is the most important historical breakpoint. Blizzard described several system and activity changes:

Old talent-build instructions can therefore be misleading even when they carry the correct class name.
- Pandaren and Monks: Pandaren became playable, and Monks became a new class with Windwalker, Mistweaver, and Brewmaster specializations.
- Area-of-effect looting: AOE looting lets you collect loot from multiple nearby defeated enemies in one action, reducing the amount of individual corpse looting during questing and farming.
- Pet Battles: Pet Battles became an additional collection and combat activity rather than a requirement for the main leveling campaign.
- Theramore’s Fall: Blizzard introduced the Theramore’s Fall scenario as a world event during the transition.
These changes affect how an old character feels immediately after logging in. Review your action bars, talents, specialization, and keybinds before entering a difficult dungeon or battleground. A guide written for an earlier Classic expansion may describe abilities or talent choices that no longer match the Mists of Pandaria ruleset.

How the level-90 journey is laid out
Blizzard’s launch announcement set the level cap at 90. Its leveling outline placed the Wandering Isle at levels 1–10 and the Pandaria zones at levels 85–90. The named zones were:
- Jade Forest
- Valley of the Four Winds
- Krasarang Wilds
- Kun-Lai Summit
- Townlong Steppes
- Dread Wastes
- Vale of Eternal Blossoms
Those ranges are a launch-era outline, not a promise that every region, quest reward, or optimal route is unchanged in October 2026. They are still useful for understanding the intended progression: a returning level-85 character moves through Pandaria’s story zones toward level 90, while a new Pandaren spends levels 1–10 on the Wandering Isle before choosing a faction and continuing onward.
Do not treat the list as a mandatory linear checklist. Questing, dungeons, scenarios, PvP, and other activities can be mixed as you level. Your best route depends on whether you prefer story quests, queue-based group content, organized play, or a slower exploration-focused run.

Blizzard’s launch overview gives a useful snapshot of the original activity mix. The counts below describe what was announced for launch in 2025; they are not the total amount of live content after later updates.

Solo-friendly choices
Questing remains the clearest solo path through the zones. Pet Battles provide a separate activity that can be pursued at your own pace, and later content added Proving Grounds for structured individual practice. These options are useful if you are relearning class controls, playing on an irregular schedule, or waiting for a group queue.
Activities that benefit from a group
Traditional dungeons and raids require coordinated parties, while Scenarios use three players and Challenge Mode dungeons use five. Battlegrounds, arenas, and later outdoor objectives are group-oriented even when you can queue alone. Decide whether you want to organize with friends, use matchmaking, or focus on solo content before choosing a primary leveling rhythm.
Why old launch guides are incomplete
The Thunder King update
Blizzard announced the Thunder King content update as live in December 2025. It added the Isle of Thunder and Isle of Giants, Thunderforging, another chapter of the Legendary quest, the world bosses Oondasta and Nalak, new Scenarios, Challenge Mode changes, Celestial Dungeons updates, and the Throne of Thunder raid. A launch-only guide cannot describe these destinations or systems accurately because they did not exist in the original launch list.

The Siege of Orgrimmar update added Timeless Isle, the Siege of Orgrimmar raid, five new world bosses, the final push for the Legendary Cloak, Proving Grounds, and PvP Season 14. If a guide ends its endgame explanation with the three launch raids or refers only to PvP Season 12, it is describing an earlier point in the release sequence.

Escalation
In a weekly announcement dated March 2026, Blizzard said the Escalation update would arrive on March 31, 2026. The announcement described new Scenarios, Heroic Scenarios, a Northern Barrens conquest event, and additional features. The exact availability of each feature can depend on the current phase and region, so use the live client’s notices rather than assuming every older schedule applies today.
Maintenance in October 2026
Blizzard’s October 6, 2026 hotfix notice included Mists of Pandaria Classic among the game modes receiving attention. That confirms ongoing maintenance, but it does not provide a complete phase calendar or prove which raid unlock is active in every region. Treat any date-specific raid or event claim as something to verify in game.

Blizzard’s April 20, 2026 Joyous Journeys notice described a 50% experience bonus up to level 90. The notice said the bonus was active by default and could be switched on or off by speaking with an innkeeper in a capital city or Dalaran. It also said the bonus would last until the next Mists of Pandaria Classic content update.

That end point is conditional, and the notice is dated April. Do not assume the bonus is still active simply because an old leveling guide mentions it. Once you are in game, check the character’s active effects or speak with the relevant innkeeper; turn it off only if you deliberately want the unboosted leveling pace.

A practical starting procedure
- Confirm access. Make sure the account has an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, then update the client.
- Choose a starting character. Use a returning level-85 character for a direct path into the 85–90 Pandaria journey, or create a new character if you want to learn the current systems from the beginning.
- Review your class setup. Open the talent and specialization interfaces, check abilities added or changed by the pre-patch, and rebuild action bars before difficult content.
- Pick your opening experience. A Pandaren starts on the Wandering Isle and later chooses Alliance or Horde. Another race follows its own starting route and can enter Pandaria when eligible.
- Check the experience bonus. Visit an innkeeper in a capital city or Dalaran to see whether Joyous Journeys is currently available and enabled.
- Set a content mix. Combine zone quests with dungeons, Scenarios, Pet Battles, PvP, or other activities according to the amount of group coordination you want.
- Verify the live phase. Read the current in-game notices for raid, event, and seasonal availability instead of relying on a 2025 launch schedule.
Mistakes that cause confusion
Assuming you must buy a separate expansion
The launch announcement identifies subscription or Game Time access. It does not describe an additional Mists of Pandaria purchase as a requirement. Optional packs and character services are separate questions, and their current prices or availability are not established by the launch information.
Reading launch counts as current totals
Six new dungeons, four revamped Heroics, three raids, and seven Scenarios are launch-era figures. Later updates added raids, bosses, scenarios, and other systems. Use those numbers to understand the original scope, not to count everything available in the live game.
Choosing Pandaren or Monk because you think it is mandatory
Pandaren and Monks were introduced with the pre-patch, but neither is required. A non-Pandaren character and a non-Monk class can still progress through Pandaria’s zones and activities.

Trusting an old phase schedule
Launch announcements, the December 2025 Thunder King notice, the later Siege update, and the March 31, 2026 Escalation announcement describe different points in the release sequence. Regional timing and current unlocks can differ from those historical notices. Check the live game before planning around a raid, season, or event.
Assuming the leveling buff is permanent
The Joyous Journeys notice tied the 50% bonus to the next content update. Its continued availability must be checked in game, even if your saved guide still lists it.
