A Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W can run lightweight self-hosted software, but the headline alone does not establish which three subscriptions it replaced—or that the setup is “bulletproof.” The $15 figure was the board’s October 2021 launch price, not evidence of today’s retail price. Whether this small computer can replace a particular service depends on the software, workload, storage, access needs, and the owner’s backup and recovery plan.
What the $15 Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W can—and cannot—tell you
Raspberry Pi announced the Zero 2 W on 28 October 2021 with a launch price of $15. That historical price should not be treated as a current offer. The board has a quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 processor running at 1 GHz, 512 MB of LPDDR2 RAM, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, and a microSD slot. Raspberry Pi’s announcement and official product specifications document those details.
Those are modest resources for a server. They may suit a focused, lightweight service, but they do not establish that the board can replace an unspecified subscription. The title does not identify the services, replacement software, configuration, storage, remote-access setup, or period of uptime. Without those details, a service-by-service verdict or reliability claim would be guesswork.

Pi-hole is a plausible lightweight use
Pi-hole is one documented candidate for a small home server. It describes itself as “a DNS (Domain Name Service) sinkhole that protects your devices from unwanted content, without installing any client-side software.” Its overview and project site explain the role it can play on a network.

Pi-hole blocks domains through DNS. Devices must use it for DNS for network-wide blocking to apply, and DNS filtering cannot guarantee that every ad or tracker will be blocked; apps can deliver content through other methods. Pi-hole’s prerequisites specify at least 512 MB of RAM, 2 GB of free disk space (4 GB recommended), a supported Linux distribution, and a static IP address or DHCP reservation. Those requirements make it a documented fit to consider, not proof that a particular installation is reliable.
Pi-hole can also run on compatible non-Raspberry Pi hardware, so the Zero 2 W is an option rather than a requirement. Running it at home also differs from buying a hosted service: your network depends on the device being available and configured as intended.

Media-server claims need workload details
Jellyfin offers self-hosted media-server software, but its hardware-selection guidance warns that most single-board computers may be too slow for an acceptable experience. The Zero 2 W’s specifications alone do not establish that it can stream or transcode media reliably. A meaningful claim would need to identify the files, number and type of client devices, whether playback requires transcoding, and the network conditions.

What you need besides the board
The Zero 2 W has a microSD slot, and Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation says the operating system loads from boot media. It recommends an official power supply and lists 5 V at 2.5 A for Zero models. Confirm current supply and connector compatibility before purchasing or naming a specific part.
For a Pi-hole setup, plan for supported Linux software, the required free space, and a static IP address or DHCP reservation. For other services, storage capacity, performance, and connection requirements depend on the workload; the board’s microSD slot does not establish that a particular card or storage arrangement is suitable.

What “bulletproof” would require readers to know
“Bulletproof” is a description of the owner’s experience, not a reliability measure established by the board’s specifications or the cited software documentation. To assess it, readers would need the uptime period, outages and failure history, and evidence that backups and recovery have actually been tested. No uptime record or recovery test is established here.
Self-hosting also shifts responsibility. Availability can depend on home power, the router, the internet connection, the Pi and its storage, and maintenance. If a service is reachable remotely, the security and access method matter too. Without the actual configuration, it is not possible to assess those risks or promise continuous access.

How to judge whether your own subscription can be replaced
- Identify the job: List the specific feature or content you use from the paid service and confirm the self-hosted software actually provides it.
- Check the workload: Compare the software’s requirements with the Zero 2 W’s 512 MB of RAM, processor, storage, and network connection. Do not assume that a service that installs will perform acceptably.
- Count the full costs: Compare recurring fees with hardware, storage, electricity, maintenance time, and replacement costs. The board’s 2021 launch price does not establish current hardware cost or total savings.
- Plan availability and recovery: Decide what happens during a power, router, internet, device, or storage failure, and how you would restore the service from backup.
- Account for remote access: If you need access away from home, evaluate the actual access and security setup rather than assuming the service is safely available online.
