Preordering a video game is a purchase decision, not a guarantee of a bonus, early access, early delivery, or a particular refund right. The outcome depends on the game’s edition, the store, the platform, the country where you buy it, and whether you download or stream the product before release.
Before you pay, verify the exact listing, charge date, cancellation deadline, preload behavior, advertised bonus, and physical-delivery estimate. The policies below are official examples from Nintendo, Steam, and PlayStation UK; they show why you must read the rules for your own seller and region.
What does a video game preorder actually promise?
A preorder reserves a purchase for a game that is not yet available. It may also include a specific bonus, early access, or preload, but none of those benefits follows automatically from the word “preorder.” Each game and edition defines its own offer.

Check the edition and the benefit
Open the exact store listing and identify whether the benefit is part of the edition you selected. It might be downloadable content, an in-game item, a soundtrack, a physical collectible, a code, or access before the general release. Confirm whether the benefit is delivered immediately, after payment is captured, at launch, or by a separate code.

Nintendo says bonus content is offered only occasionally. Steam says participating games identify whether a pre-purchase version includes Advance Access. Treat an unqualified claim such as “preorder bonus” in a retailer headline as a prompt to inspect the edition details, not as proof that every edition receives the same item.
Confirm the release date and platform
Check the date, time zone if stated, platform, and edition name on the listing. A console version, PC version, deluxe edition, and physical edition can have different release times or fulfillment schedules. If the publisher changes the date, revisit the payment, preload, and cancellation terms rather than assuming the original schedule still applies.
When will you be charged?
Payment timing is set by the seller. It can affect when a bonus becomes available and when a cancellation right ends.
Nintendo digital and physical examples in the United States
Nintendo’s US support page distinguishes digital eShop preorders from physical Nintendo Store pre-purchases. A digital preorder is charged no sooner than seven days before release. A physical pre-purchase is charged immediately and ships one to three business days after release. These are Nintendo US terms, not a general rule for other stores or countries. Why the charge date matters
A charge made close to release can leave you with time to change your mind, while an immediate charge may activate a different cancellation process. Save the order confirmation and note the stated capture date. If you use a voucher, gift balance, or a payment card that may expire, check what the store does when the scheduled transaction fails.

Nintendo’s US eShop FAQ warns that a selected Game Voucher is not reserved for the preorder. If you spend the voucher before payment is processed and have none available at that time, payment can fail and the preorder can be canceled. Read the Nintendo eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ for that specific behavior.
Can you cancel or get a refund if you change your mind?
There is no universal preorder refund rule. The seller’s policy, your region, the time since payment, and whether the game has downloaded, streamed, or been played can all change the result.

Steam states: “Per Steam’s standard refund policy, you may refund your pre-order any time prior to the release of the game.” Before release, its preorder FAQ allows a refund at any time. After release, the request generally must be submitted within 14 days of release and the game must have been played for less than two hours. If you bought the preorder more than six months earlier, Steam says the refund may not return to the original payment method, although Steam Wallet credit may still be requested. Steam Advance Access
For a game that offers Advance Access, Steam says you can request a refund any time before Advance Access starts. The standard 14-day period begins on the game’s release day, and the participating game’s store page indicates whether that edition includes Advance Access. Starting early access is therefore a meaningful deadline: do not assume that the normal release date is the only date that matters.
Nintendo digital purchases in the United States
Nintendo’s US digital refund policy says: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.” Read the complete Nintendo digital-products refund policy before ordering. A general statutory right in your location may still apply, but the policy itself does not promise a routine change-of-mind refund.

PlayStation Store UK
The PlayStation Store cancellation policy for the UK provides different preorder paths depending on when payment occurred. If the main product has not started downloading or streaming, a preorder paid for more than 14 days before release can be canceled any time before release. A preorder paid for 14 days or less before release can be canceled up to 14 days after payment. The policy says that starting a download or stream removes those listed refund paths unless the item is faulty, and it notes that local law may provide additional rights. Read the PlayStation Store cancellation policy (UK); do not apply it automatically outside the UK.

Often, yes. A preload puts files on your device before release, but it can also be treated as the start of digital fulfillment.
Nintendo’s preload deadline
Nintendo’s US eShop FAQ says cancellation is available before payment is processed and the game is preloaded, up to seven days before release. It also says bonus download codes become available after payment has processed, no sooner than seven days before release. Once those events occur, the stated cancellation window has ended.
PlayStation UK automatic downloads
PlayStation UK conditions its listed preorder cancellation routes on the main product not having begun to download or stream. Automatic downloads can start if you enable them. If preserving a cancellation option matters, check the console’s automatic-download setting and avoid starting the product until you are certain you will keep it.
Steam’s different test
Steam’s published preorder rules focus on release, Advance Access, purchase age, and playtime. A preload is not the same as launching the game, but Advance Access can begin the relevant refund period earlier than the public release. Check the game’s store page and the current Steam policy before using early access.

Are preorder bonuses guaranteed, and when do you receive them?
A bonus is guaranteed only when the listing clearly includes it for the edition and seller you are buying from, subject to the stated conditions. Confirm all of the following before checkout:
- The exact name of the edition and platform.
- The bonus item or content, including whether it is physical, downloadable, or a separate code.
- The qualifying purchase deadline, if one is stated.
- When the entitlement or code is delivered.
- Whether the benefit is available in your country and on your account.
Nintendo’s US FAQ says bonus download codes become available after payment has processed, no sooner than seven days before release. That means placing an order alone does not necessarily deliver the code immediately. Other stores may grant an entitlement at checkout, at preload, or at release; the individual listing controls.
Digital versus physical: what should you compare?
Neither format is universally better. Compare the practical consequences for this game, seller, and region.

Use the seller’s own delivery estimate for a physical copy. A physical format may suit someone who wants a disc or cartridge, resale flexibility where permitted, or less dependence on a digital account. Digital may suit someone who values preload and immediate access. Those are preference and logistics decisions, not guarantees about price or performance.

Complete this checklist on the actual product page rather than relying on a trailer, social post, or search snippet.

- Identify the product. Confirm the title, platform, edition, region, and release date.
- Read the benefit description. Record the exact bonus, early-access period, and delivery method.
- Record payment timing. Note whether the seller charges now, near release, or on another stated schedule.
- Open the cancellation and refund policy. Check deadlines and conditions for payment, preload, download, streaming, release, and playtime.
- Check preload settings. Find out whether automatic downloads are enabled and whether starting one affects eligibility.
- Verify fulfillment. For physical orders, review stock status, dispatch timing, delivery estimate, and return process.
- Check your payment method. Make sure the card, balance, voucher, or account authorization will still work on the charge date.
- Save evidence. Keep the order confirmation, listing details, promised bonus, and policy link. Recheck them if the release date changes.
When is preordering a sensible choice?
Preorder when the specific benefit has value to you
A preorder can make sense when the edition includes a bonus or early-access period you genuinely want, the payment timing is acceptable, and the refund policy leaves enough flexibility for your risk tolerance. Confirm that the benefit is available in your region and that you understand when it arrives.
Wait when the policy creates unwanted risk
Waiting is safer when the seller charges immediately, the digital refund policy is restrictive, preload could end your cancellation path, the physical delivery estimate is uncertain, or the advertised bonus is vague. You can reassess after launch when reviews, technical reports, and actual availability are clearer.
Do not preorder solely because of scarcity language
A countdown, limited-edition label, or promotional message does not replace the product terms. Check whether the item is truly limited, whether the bonus is tied to a particular retailer, and what happens if the release date moves.

What to do if something goes wrong
- The charge fails: Check the payment method, account balance, expiration date, and any voucher requirement. Nintendo’s US FAQ specifically warns that a missing Game Voucher at processing can cancel the preorder.
- The bonus is missing: Confirm that payment has processed, the code-delivery date has arrived, and you bought the qualifying edition. Keep the receipt and contact the seller through its official support channel.
- The game downloaded automatically: Stop launching or streaming it, then review the policy for your region immediately. Download or streaming status can affect eligibility.
- The release date changes: Save the new date and reread the seller’s payment, preload, shipping, and cancellation terms. Do not assume the original deadline moved automatically.
- The physical copy is late: Check the dispatch notice and carrier estimate. A stated shipping window is an estimate, not proof of release-day arrival.
Questions to answer before clicking Buy
Can I cancel before the charge? Can I still cancel after payment? Does preload, download, streaming, Advance Access, or playtime change the rule? What exactly is included in this edition? When is the bonus delivered? When will the seller charge me? Is this policy for my country and this store? If any answer is unclear, postpone the order until you can verify it on the seller’s current listing or support page.
