Before you preorder a PC game, verify three things on the exact store listing: what each edition actually contains, when and how you can get your money back, and whether your computer meets the game’s requirements. Refund rights differ by storefront, country, payment method, and product type. A “Deluxe” label does not guarantee useful extras, and a minimum-specification list is a compatibility floor—not a promise of smooth frame rates.
Start with the listing, not the marketing name
Preorders are commitments made before the final product is available to everyone. The safest approach is to treat the live product page as the contract for that purchase. Check the edition name, included items, release date, early-play terms, supported operating systems, refund designation, and the seller handling payment.
- Buy from the storefront whose refund and payment rules you understand.
- Save a copy of the listing or order confirmation if the edition includes time-limited bonuses.
- Check whether the transaction is made through the platform itself or through a third-party key seller.
- Read the requirements for the PC version, not the console version or a publisher’s general FAQ.
Policies summarized below are from official US-facing Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft pages available on October 13, 2026. Store terms can change, and consumer law in your country may provide additional rights.

There is no universal PC-game preorder rule. The purchase type, storefront, product label, billing date, playtime, and local law can all change the result. Use the following as a decision guide, then verify the wording shown on your own order.

Steam: the two-hour rule applies after release
Steam’s stated preorder guidance is straightforward: “Per Steam’s standard refund policy, you may refund your pre-order any time prior to the release of the game.” Once the game releases, the request must fall within two weeks and playtime must remain below two hours. The clock is tied to the official release, not simply the date you placed the order.
An important exception concerns Advance Access. If an edition lets you play before the official launch, Steam treats the pre-release refund deadline as the moment Advance Access starts. Playing during that window does not leave the pre-release deadline unchanged. After the full release, the standard 14-day period begins, while the two-hour playtime condition still matters.
Epic Games Store: read the refund badge and bundle contents
Epic’s policy is conditional rather than automatic for every listing. Eligible PC and Mac products are identified as “refundable” or “self-refundable.” For a normal purchase, the stated period is 14 days from purchase. For a pre-purchase, the period is 14 days after release, with less than two hours of runtime. Epic also says an eligible self-refundable preorder can be refunded before release.

Do not assume that every item in a special edition shares that treatment. Virtual currency, consumables, and some other products can be marked non-refundable. Epic’s policy also discusses European Union statutory withdrawal rights and the possibility of requesting a waiver at checkout. If you buy through a key reseller or another payment provider, that seller’s terms—not Epic’s checkout policy—may control the request.
Microsoft Store: billing can happen before launch
Microsoft’s payment timing is different from Steam’s. A digital preorder paid from account balance is charged immediately. A different payment method may be charged up to 10 days before the release date. If you cancel after that charge but before release, Microsoft describes the transaction as a refund.
That does not create a Steam-style, guaranteed 14-day/two-hour policy. Microsoft’s separate guidance says PC digital goods generally are not refundable unless an offer or applicable law says otherwise. Check the individual order, the payment method, and the terms presented for your country before relying on a cancellation.

What happens when you cancel a preorder?
- Identify the seller. Open the order history for the account that placed the purchase. A bank statement alone may not show which platform’s policy applies.
- Check whether you have been billed. Microsoft may bill well before launch; Steam and Epic timing can depend on the transaction and product. Billing status affects whether the action is a cancellation or a refund.
- Stop launching the game if a post-release refund may be needed. On Steam and Epic, playtime/runtime thresholds are part of the stated rules.
- Use the platform’s support or order workflow. Select the exact preorder rather than opening a generic payment dispute with your bank.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the request number, timestamp, and decision. If the request is denied, those details help when you ask for a policy review or invoke a local statutory right.
A third-party key seller can impose different deadlines, activation restrictions, and refund conditions. The platform where a key is redeemed is not necessarily the merchant that sold it.

Advance Access is not Early Access
Steam uses Advance Access for an opportunity to play a finished game before its full release. Valve describes it as “not a unique model of development for a game” but simply early access to a game before it fully releases on Steam. The developer or publisher decides whether to offer it, and only participating games have it.
Early Access, by contrast, is a development model in which a game is released while it is still being built. It may have missing features, bugs, balance changes, or a roadmap rather than a final-content promise. The two labels can appear near each other on a store, but they imply different expectations and can affect refund timing differently.

- Look for the exact term used on the listing: “Advance Access,” “Early Access,” or another publisher-specific label.
- Find the date and time the early-play window begins, not only the full-release date.
- Check whether the bonus applies to every edition or only a higher tier.
- Assume that progress, servers, and features may change unless the listing states otherwise.
How to compare game editions without overpaying
There is no standard meaning for Base, Deluxe, Gold, Ultimate, or similar names. Compare the contents line by line on the game’s actual page.

A practical value test
Write down the price difference between the base and higher edition. Then mark each extra as “will use,” “might use,” or “does not matter.” Count only content you would otherwise buy or genuinely want. Do not assign value to a season pass until its scope, release schedule, and platform compatibility are clear.
How to check whether your PC can run the game
Open the exact store page for the version you plan to buy and find the System Requirements section. Steam says the page lists compatible operating systems and hardware requirements, and warns that a computer at or near the published requirements can still experience performance or launch problems.

- Confirm the operating system. Check the supported Windows edition or other listed OS, plus whether a 64-bit installation is required.
- Record your hardware. Note the processor model, graphics card, installed memory, and available storage. Check whether the listing specifies a particular graphics feature, driver, or launcher.
- Compare like with like. Match the listed CPU and GPU families and model numbers, not just a brand name or clock speed. A newer low-power part is not automatically faster than an older performance part.
- Check storage capacity and type. Make sure enough free space exists for the initial install, patches, and any required shader or cache files.
- Interpret minimum and recommended correctly. Minimum usually indicates a baseline for starting the game under stated conditions; it does not promise a target frame rate, resolution, graphics preset, or stable performance.
- Look for independent evidence when close to the line. If your PC is below or barely above the list, wait for a demo, a reputable performance test, or confirmed launch reports instead of buying hardware from a vague “recommended” label.
Why matching the minimum may still disappoint
Requirements are not a universal benchmark. Results vary with resolution, graphics settings, background applications, driver versions, patches, ray-tracing options, and crowded in-game scenes. A system can launch a game yet fail to deliver the frame rate or image quality you expect. Steam’s warning about machines at or near the stated requirements is therefore a reason to leave headroom, not a promise that the published list is wrong.
A preorder decision checklist
- Have you confirmed the official release date and time zone?
- Does the exact edition include the content you want, rather than only a marketing label?
- Is the product marked refundable, self-refundable, or subject to a different rule?
- Will your payment method be charged immediately or before release?
- Does an Advance Access window begin before the normal refund period?
- Have you checked the seller if the purchase is a key or code rather than a direct platform transaction?
- Does your PC meet the operating-system, CPU, GPU, memory, and storage requirements with reasonable headroom?
- Would you still buy the game if launch-day reviews, servers, or performance were disappointing?
When waiting is the safer choice
Wait for release when the edition contents are vague, the PC is close to minimum requirements, the game depends on online services, or the refund designation is missing. Waiting can also clarify whether promised expansions arrive on schedule and whether the first patches address performance problems. A preorder bonus is only valuable if it outweighs the uncertainty and the restrictions attached to your storefront’s policy.
Bottom line
Preorder only after you can answer three specific questions from the live listing: exactly what am I buying, exactly how can I recover the money, and exactly how does my PC compare with the requirements? Steam offers a pre-release refund and a post-release two-week/under-two-hour rule, with Advance Access changing the pre-release deadline. Epic requires the appropriate refund designation and applies its stated 14-day and under-two-hour conditions to eligible products. Microsoft may charge before launch and does not present the same general guarantee for PC digital goods. Edition names and hardware labels are not substitutes for those details.
