You can start The Talos Principle 2 without finishing the original, but playing the first game gives you the clearest context for the series’ story and returning puzzle mechanics. If you are new to the series, either the 2014 original or The Talos Principle: Reawakened is a sensible starting point. The separate Road to Gehenna expansion is optional based on the official descriptions available.

What is The Talos Principle about?

Croteam describes the 2014 game as “a first-person puzzle game in the tradition of philosophical science fiction.” You awaken in a world where ancient ruins sit alongside advanced technology. A creator gives you increasingly complex puzzles to solve, while the story asks you to consider identity, purpose, faith, and whether to question the instructions you receive. Its broader concerns include humanity, technology, and civilization.

The world is non-linear, so you can choose your route through its puzzles rather than follow a single fixed path. Croteam frames the central questions as: “Who are you? What is your purpose And what are you going to do about it?” Croteam’s original-game factsheet gives the premise and the game’s listed release date, 11 December 2014.

How does the first game connect to The Talos Principle 2?

Croteam calls the sequel “the next step forward in the story.” Biological humanity is extinct, but human culture persists in a city of robots. The sequel follows an adventure surrounding a mysterious megastructure and turns attention toward civilization, reason, and whether the mistakes of humanity’s past will be repeated. That shifts the series’ questions about identity, faith, and purpose toward the choices of a post-human society.

The sequel keeps familiar puzzle mechanics while introducing abilities such as gravity manipulation and mind transference. It also includes puzzles at different difficulty levels, metapuzzles, and Gold puzzles. Its story is character-driven and has multiple endings, according to Croteam’s The Talos Principle 2 page.

What carries over, and what changes?

Aspect The Talos Principle The Talos Principle 2
Story focus A creator’s challenge prompts questions about identity, faith, and purpose. A robot society faces questions about civilization, reason, and repeating humanity’s mistakes.
Puzzle approach First-person puzzles in a non-linear world. Familiar mechanics combine with gravity manipulation and mind transference; there are also metapuzzles and Gold puzzles.
Scale and exploration The official factsheet describes a non-linear world; it does not give a comparable environment count. Croteam describes more than a dozen all-new environments.
How much to complete The official factsheet does not state whether every puzzle must be solved to finish. You can finish without solving every puzzle, or pursue complete mastery.

Should you play the original first?

Play it first if you want the original story context and a chance to recognize the puzzle mechanics that return in the sequel. It also lets the series’ thematic shift land as a progression: the first game focuses on a creator’s challenge and questions of selfhood, while the sequel explores a society inheriting human culture.

You do not need to treat the original as a lore quiz or prerequisite. Croteam’s descriptions establish continuity and recurring mechanics, but do not say that completing the first game is required to understand or start the sequel.

Croteam’s announcements describe the edition and its changes: The Talos Principle: Reawakened.

Is Road to Gehenna required before the sequel?

No requirement is established in the official description. Road to Gehenna is a separate expansion following Uriel, Elohim’s messenger, on a mission of mercy and redemption. It has four episodes, advanced puzzles, new characters, and a society with its own history and philosophy. It is optional additional story and challenge for players who want more of the original game’s world, not established prerequisite homework for The Talos Principle 2.
