Shin chan: Shiro and the Coal Town is a single-player adventure about exploring rural Akita and a mysterious, Showa-era-inspired Coal Town. Its core is a gentle routine of fishing, bug collecting, foraging, gardening, cooking-related errands, inventions and trolley races, not a combat-driven action campaign. It is available on Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam, but language lists, ratings, release dates and storage requirements differ by storefront and region.

The story connects two very different places
Akita countryside
The Nohara family travels to a village near Hiroshi’s parents’ home in Akita. Shinnosuke’s grandfather introduces him to country pastimes, including fishing and catching bugs. The village is the naturalistic side of the game: you search fields and waterways, collect specimens and ingredients, and spend time with family and local residents.
The train to Coal Town
The second setting begins when Shiro appears covered in soot, runs away and leads Shinnosuke onto a mysterious train. The journey takes him to Coal Town, which the publisher describes as lively and prosperous while evoking Japan’s Showa era. The contrast between the quiet village and the busy industrial town is the central premise, so expect the two areas to offer different scenery, characters and objectives rather than simply being two versions of the same map.

Fishing, bugs and the nature book
Fishing and bug catching are explicit parts of Shinnosuke’s countryside routine. The creatures you find are recorded in a nature book, giving exploration a collection goal. Coal Town includes a diner whose menu you help create. The official description specifically mentions gathering ingredients and helping with menu items. Treat ingredients as a reason to keep collecting during your other activities; the game links the rural gathering loop to the town’s social and food-related objectives.
Family and residents
Time with the Nohara family and the people you meet is part of the adventure’s rhythm. The listings describe helping residents and spending time in the village, so the game’s progression is not limited to collecting objects. Talk to characters, pay attention to requests and explore after story events change what is available.

Trolley customization and races

Nintendo’s US listing says Switch 2 compatibility is supported with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. It also cautions that the play experience may differ on Switch Lite. That means owners of those systems should read the compatibility note on the current listing instead of assuming identical behavior across every Switch model.

Check your Windows PC
- Open Settings and select System to confirm that your Windows edition and system type meet the 64-bit requirement.
- In Settings > System > About, compare your processor and installed RAM with the listed Intel Core i5 4440 and 8 GB minimums.
- Open Settings > System > Storage and make sure at least 4 GB is free on the drive where Steam will install the game. Leave additional headroom for Windows updates and other applications.
- Check your graphics card in Task Manager > Performance > GPU or in your manufacturer’s control panel, then compare it with the listed GeForce GTX 950 requirement.
- Install or update DirectX and your graphics driver through normal Windows and GPU-vendor update channels before troubleshooting launch problems.
Meeting a minimum requirement does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate or loading time. The Steam listing supplies the minimum configuration but does not publish a recommended tier in the information available here.
Language support is storefront- and region-specific
Do not treat one store page’s language list as a universal matrix. The current listings differ:

Before buying, open the store page attached to your account region and confirm the exact language combination you need. In particular, do not infer that a language shown on Steam will also be available in the Switch edition, or that the US and UK Switch listings are interchangeable.

A practical first-session plan
- Pick the edition that fits your hardware. Use Switch if you value TV, tabletop or handheld play; use Steam if your Windows PC meets the published minimums and you prefer PC installation.
- Confirm the local listing. Check language support, rating, edition and release information on your regional storefront before checkout.
- Reserve storage. Keep 2.7 GB available for the Switch download or at least 4 GB for the Steam installation, with extra room for normal system overhead.
- Start by exploring, not rushing. Fish, catch bugs, forage and look for seeds while learning the village. These activities feed the nature-book, gardening and ingredient systems.
- Keep useful finds. Ingredients and other objects can matter later for diner menu work or the inventor’s machine, so avoid treating every pickup as disposable.
- Visit both settings as the story opens them. Akita supplies the rural routine; Coal Town adds inventions, diner work and trolley races. Their different purposes are part of the game’s design.
- Use the store’s support information for technical issues. The published material does not give a universal save-transfer procedure, completion-time estimate or difficulty ranking, so do not rely on assumptions from another platform or game.
What the official listings do not tell you
The available product pages are useful for premise, activities, platforms, requirements, languages and ratings, but they do not establish a reliable completion-time estimate, a formal difficulty scale or detailed save behavior. They also do not verify current physical stock, retailer availability or a current price. In short, buy it for its two-setting adventure and everyday systems, not for an action-game progression model. Verify your regional storefront’s language and rating, then use the platform-specific storage and PC requirements above to avoid setup surprises.
