Usually, you can start with a sequel—but not every sequel is equally welcoming. Check the game’s official page or FAQ for three signals: whether it is described as standalone, whether an official recap is available, and whether the publisher says earlier events are important for the new story. A sequel may be easy to follow while still reserving its biggest emotional or lore payoffs for returning players.
There is no universal rule for sequels
The word sequel describes a game’s position in a series, not the amount of preparation it demands. Some follow-ups are designed as independent entry points. Others continue immediately from the previous ending and assume you know the characters, conflicts and terminology. Many occupy the middle ground: the main plot is understandable, but earlier games add context that makes relationships, reveals or callbacks more meaningful.
That is why advice from one franchise does not automatically apply to another. Square Enix calls FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH a standalone game, while PlayStation says Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 can be enjoyed without prior knowledge but recommends earlier titles for the fullest experience. Remedy describes Alan Wake 2 as a standalone experience while acknowledging connections for returning players. A Plague Tale: Requiem continues the story of Innocence, yet its developers deliberately designed it for newcomers as well.

1. Does the publisher call it standalone or newcomer-friendly?
Look for wording such as “standalone,” “welcomes newcomers,” or “no prior knowledge required.” This is the strongest indication that you can begin with the sequel and understand its basic objective, controls and story setup. It does not mean returning players receive no benefit; it means the developer intends to provide enough information inside the new game.

2. Is there an official recap?
A recap video or in-game summary can cover the predecessor’s essential plot without asking you to complete a 20-hour campaign. Check the sequel’s main menu, extras or settings for a “Previously on,” “Story recap” or “What happened before” option. Prefer the publisher’s own recap, because it is less likely to spoil events from the sequel or omit the details the developers consider important.
3. Does the sequel directly resume the previous story?
Words such as “continues,” “picks up after,” or “the next chapter of” suggest stronger narrative dependence. You may still be able to play, but expect unfamiliar names, references to earlier decisions and emotional stakes that were established before the sequel begins. In that situation, a recap is the minimum preparation; playing the original is better if you care about experiencing the story in order.

What the major examples show
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH: a stated standalone entry with a recap
Square Enix’s official FAQ says, “FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH is a standalone game that welcomes fans and newcomers alike.” The same FAQ explains that a recap video for FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE is available from REBIRTH’s in-game menu. That combination is unusually clear: you can begin with REBIRTH, and the game provides a first-party way to learn the preceding setup.
Starting there can still leave you without the personal history that returning players bring with them. A recap supplies facts and chronology; it cannot reproduce the experience of making choices, meeting characters or discovering the earlier game’s twists yourself. If you mainly want the new adventure, use the built-in recap. If the series’ character arcs and reveals are your main reason for playing, the earlier title remains worthwhile.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: playable without prior knowledge, richer in order
PlayStation’s FAQ gives a useful distinction: “You can enjoy Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 without prior story or character knowledge, but we recommend you explore previous titles to fully experience the emerging narrative.” The first half answers the practical question—new players are not locked out of enjoyment. The second half describes the cost of skipping: less familiarity with the characters and less buildup for the developing story.
This is the typical “accessible sequel” model. The game teaches enough to function on its own, while earlier entries improve your understanding of why characters behave as they do and why certain moments matter. You can choose the sequel for its current gameplay without claiming that the chronological route is identical.

Alan Wake 2: standalone structure with connected lore
Remedy’s FAQ says, “Alan Wake 2 is a sequel but set up as a stand-alone experience.” It also points readers toward a “Previously on” video and notes lore connections for returning players. That means a newcomer can use the recap to establish the relevant premise, while a returning player will recognize more of the universe’s links and references.

When a game is presented this way, do not treat the recap as optional trivia. Watch it before starting if you have not played the original, then pay attention to the sequel’s own explanations. You will receive the intended foundation without needing to reconstruct the earlier game from wikis or spoiler-heavy videos.

A Plague Tale: Requiem: direct continuation built for newcomers
In an Xbox Wire interview published on August 18, 2022, the developers explain that Requiem continues Innocence while being designed to welcome people new to the series: “Players can enjoy Requiem without having experienced the events of Innocence; that is something we’ve worked hard on.”
This is an important warning against assuming that a direct continuation is automatically inaccessible. The new game can teach newcomers what they need, but its premise still originates in the earlier story. If you have time, playing Innocence first gives you the intended character progression. If you do not, look for an official summary and expect the sequel to introduce its world as you go.
Choose among three preparation levels
Start immediately
Choose this when the official description says standalone or newcomer-friendly, a recap is available, and you primarily want the sequel’s gameplay. Keep the recap option available rather than searching for plot summaries, and pause when the game introduces an unfamiliar faction or character instead of assuming you must stop playing.

Watch the official recap first
This is the best compromise when the sequel is connected but you do not want to commit to the original. Watch the recap in one sitting, note the main characters and unresolved conflict, then begin the sequel. Avoid fan-made “complete story” videos until you have checked the official material; they may include sequel spoilers, alternate interpretations or details the new game expects you to discover naturally.
Play the original before the sequel
Take this route when you value chronological storytelling, the sequel begins immediately after the original, or you want every character payoff. Practical considerations matter: check whether the original is available on your platform, whether its controls and presentation are acceptable to you, and how much time you can spare. A remaster can improve convenience, but it is not automatically required unless the publisher or sequel specifically directs you to that edition.
What you may miss by skipping the first game
- Relationship history: the sequel may explain who characters are without reproducing how their trust, rivalry or friendship developed.
- Emotional weight: a death, reunion or betrayal can be understandable yet less powerful when you did not share the earlier journey.
- World terminology: factions, locations and supernatural rules may be introduced quickly because returning players already know them.
- Callbacks and parallels: familiar scenes, dialogue and locations may carry significance that is invisible on a first entry.
- Mechanical evolution: a sequel may assume you recognize returning systems, even when it includes tutorials for new players.
Missing these layers does not necessarily prevent you from completing the game. It changes the texture of the experience: you may understand what is happening while feeling less of why it matters.

How to investigate a specific sequel in five minutes
- Open the official store page or FAQ. Search within it for “standalone,” “newcomer,” “previous game,” “recap” and “story.”
- Record the exact guidance. Separate “can be enjoyed without prior knowledge” from “recommended for the fullest experience”; they answer different questions.
- Check the title screen and extras. Look for a recap video, chronological summary or database that explains earlier events.
- Decide what you are optimizing. Choose immediate access to new gameplay, complete narrative continuity, or a compromise through the recap.
- Reassess after the opening hour. If the game repeatedly introduces unexplained names or assumes major past events, stop and use the official recap before continuing.
How to avoid spoilers while catching up
Use the game’s own recap before searching the wider internet. If no recap exists, read only the publisher’s synopsis and avoid video thumbnails, comments and search suggestions, which often reveal late-game characters or endings. You need the predecessor’s premise, principal relationships and unresolved objective—not a scene-by-scene account of every twist.

If friends are helping, ask them for a spoiler boundary: “Explain the setup and returning characters, but do not reveal the sequel’s new antagonists, locations or ending.” This keeps your preparation focused on comprehension rather than replacing the sequel’s discoveries.
Questions to ask yourself before buying or downloading
- Do I care more about understanding the plot immediately or about preserving the original order?
- Would I enjoy the older game’s genre, controls and pacing, or would forcing myself through it reduce my enthusiasm?
- Can I access the original on my current platform without buying hardware I do not otherwise need?
- Is the sequel’s official recap short enough to fit my available time?
- Am I comfortable accepting that some callbacks will land later—or not at all?
There is no incorrect answer. The useful distinction is between comprehension and completeness: a well-designed sequel may provide enough information to understand its immediate story, while the original remains the best way to experience the series’ full buildup.
The safest default
When the game-specific information is unclear, do not assume either “you must play the original” or “the sequel is completely independent.” Check the publisher’s wording, watch any official recap, and then choose based on how much narrative continuity matters to you. The examples above demonstrate why this approach works: REBIRTH explicitly offers standalone access and an in-game recap; Spider-Man 2 separates basic enjoyment from the fullest narrative experience; Alan Wake 2 combines a standalone structure with connected lore; and Requiem continues an earlier story while intentionally supporting newcomers.
