Short answer: an unmodified PS5 does not offer broad, native compatibility with original PS2 discs. Sony’s documented backward-compatibility feature is centered on PS4 games, while the PS2 Classics catalogue is a curated selection rather than the complete PS2 library. A jailbroken PS5 can run the community PS5SX2 emulator, but that is an unofficial project with demanding prerequisites, limited published hardware testing and no guarantee that a particular game will work.

Before changing your console, identify the exact game and disc format you want to use. That decision determines whether an official PS5 purchase, original PS2, selected early PS3 model, PC emulation or PS5SX2 is the least complicated route.

What a PS5 officially supports

Sony’s official PS5 compatibility guidance describes support for the overwhelming majority of PS4 titles. It does not establish general PS2-disc compatibility. The same guidance separately states that PS3 discs are not supported, so inserting an older PlayStation disc into the optical drive is not a general backwards-compatibility solution.

Some PS2 games are available through the official PS2 Classics catalogue. Those releases are selected and packaged for supported PlayStation systems; they are not evidence that every PS2 title can be installed from its original disc. Availability can also differ by country and can change as storefront listings change. Check the current listing for the exact game before assuming that a digital version exists.

That leaves three distinct meanings of “play PS2 games on PS5”:

  • Buy an officially supported PS2 Classic when the title is available in your region.
  • Run an emulator such as PS5SX2 on a console that has been modified to run homebrew.
  • Use different hardware, such as an original PS2, a compatible early PS3 model or a computer running PCSX2.

These options differ in library coverage, physical-disc use, setup effort and reliability. Jailbreaking is not required for the official catalogue, and an official purchase cannot be assumed for a game merely because it was released on PS2.

What PS5SX2 is—and what it is not

PS5SX2 is described by its maintainers as a native port of the PCSX2 emulator for jailbroken PS5 consoles. It is community-developed software, not a Sony feature, licensed commercial product or supported PlayStation service. The project describes itself as a passion project and warns users to “Expect rough edges.” That warning matters: advertised emulator features do not translate into uniform performance for every game.

The project lists resolution scaling up to six times, graphics filters, configurable settings, save states and per-game patches. Those are capabilities of the software, not a compatibility promise. A title may boot yet still have rendering faults, audio problems, speed issues, controller quirks or an unusable save state. Compatibility must be judged game by game.

Prerequisites you must have before considering it

The project documentation assumes a technically capable user who can prepare legally obtained material and manage a modified console. Its stated requirements are:

  • A PS5 that can actually be jailbroken with the relevant software and system-software combination.
  • The PS5SX2 Helper payload and the supporting homebrew components required by the project.
  • ShadowMountPlus.
  • A PS2 BIOS dumped from your own PS2 console.
  • Your own PS2 games, prepared as ISO files when using the file-based workflow.

PS5SX2 explicitly says that it includes no BIOS, games or keys. Downloading a package does not supply any of those items. PCSX2’s own FAQ likewise explains that users provide a BIOS dump from an original PS2 and their own games, either from a disc or from dumped ISO/CSO images. Rules governing copying and backups depend on your country and circumstances; the cited project documentation does not settle those legal questions.

Hardware and firmware uncertainty

The maintainer says development is being done on a PS5 Pro running firmware 11.40. The project also says that other PS5 models and firmware versions have not been tested. This is a development configuration, not a jailbreak compatibility chart.

Do not update or downgrade your console solely because a forum post or video mentions a particular firmware. Exploit availability changes quickly, and a system update can remove an entry point that is currently useful. Conversely, retaining an old firmware does not prove that your exact model is eligible. Check current, model-specific information from a reliable source before making an irreversible change.

How physical PS2 discs fit into the picture

Current reporting from Tom’s Hardware dated October 10, 2026 says PS5SX2 can use original PS2 DVD discs, including discs from different regions, in addition to image-file formats. That is significant for owners who want to use a disc rather than create an ISO, but it does not mean every PS2 disc will work.

The same report notes that PS5 optical drives cannot read standard CDs. Some PS2 releases were distributed on CD rather than DVD, so a CD-format game is excluded from the physical-disc path even if the emulator itself could otherwise emulate it. You would need a supported image-file workflow for such a title, subject to the project’s requirements and your rights to create that image.

Disc format is only the first check. Region handling, the exact game build, emulator bugs and per-game patches can all affect the result. Treat “DVD support” as a statement about the media path, not a guarantee of complete library compatibility.

A cautious setup path

The following sequence explains the decisions involved without pretending that there is one universal jailbreak procedure. Exploit instructions are model- and firmware-specific, and the PS5SX2 documentation itself is aimed at experienced users.

  1. Name the target game. Confirm whether it is in the current official PS2 Classics catalogue. If it is, compare the supported purchase with the effort and uncertainty of homebrew.
  2. Identify your console precisely. Record the PS5 model, system-software version and whether it has an optical drive. Do not infer eligibility from the PS5 Pro 11.40 development setup.
  3. Check current exploit information before changing firmware. Use up-to-date, model-specific documentation. Do not update or downgrade on the assumption that a version mentioned by PS5SX2 will work for you.
  4. Prepare the required homebrew components. The project names PS5SX2 Helper and ShadowMountPlus in addition to the emulator. Obtain versions intended to work together and follow the project’s current instructions.
  5. Dump your own PS2 BIOS. PS5SX2 does not bundle one. Keep the dump associated with your own console and place it where the project’s current setup instructions require.
  6. Prepare your own game. The documented file workflow uses ISO images. If you intend to use a physical DVD, verify that the particular release is DVD-based and that your drive can read it; a CD-based release will not be readable through the PS5 optical drive.
  7. Launch the emulator and configure one title first. Start with conservative settings. Test basic booting, controls, graphics, audio, saving and loading before changing resolution or enabling filters.
  8. Record title-specific settings. If a per-game patch or graphics adjustment fixes a problem, keep a note of it. A setting that helps one game can break another.
  9. Keep recovery expectations realistic. Homebrew components and exploits can change. Maintain backups of personal data where possible and understand how you would return to normal system operation before experimenting.

There is no evidence that this sequence makes an unsupported console eligible or that it produces a polished experience for every game. It is a decision and preparation checklist, not a universal exploit recipe.

What can go wrong

The console is not eligible

A PS5 model or firmware outside the project’s tested configuration may lack a working entry point. The published PS5 Pro 11.40 setup cannot be generalized to all consoles. Stop at the compatibility check rather than changing firmware blindly.

The BIOS is missing or rejected

Without a user-supplied BIOS dump, the emulator cannot satisfy its stated requirement. The project does not provide a replacement. Recheck that the dump came from your own PS2 and that it is in the format and location required by the current documentation.

The game does not boot from a disc

First determine whether the disc is a DVD or CD. The PS5 optical drive limitation reported by Tom’s Hardware rules out physical CD playback. For a DVD, test the exact disc and consult current project notes; media support alone does not establish title compatibility.

The game boots but performs badly

Native emulation, six-times scaling, filters, save states and patches are optional project features, not a performance guarantee. Lower demanding graphics settings, disable a problematic filter and test the game without a patch before deciding whether the issue is title-specific. A rough edge in an early community release may have no single fix.

Online services or account questions arise

The cited material does not establish current consequences for PSN access, account standing or warranty. Those policies and technical behaviors are volatile. Do not rely on a blanket claim that jailbreaking is harmless or that a particular account action is guaranteed; verify current official policy before connecting a modified console to services you care about.

How the alternatives compare

Route What it provides Key limitation Best fit
Official PS2 Classics on PS5 Supported downloads for selected PS2 titles The catalogue is curated, not the complete PS2 library; regional listings differ A player whose exact game is officially available and who wants the lowest setup risk
PS5SX2 on a jailbroken PS5 Community emulation, image-file support and reported original DVD support Requires an eligible modified console, a user BIOS and user games; published testing is narrow and rough edges are expected A technically capable owner who accepts experimentation and has a specific reason to use the PS5
Original PS2 Original hardware and direct PS2-disc use Requires acquiring and maintaining the console and connecting it to a modern display setup Someone who values broad original-hardware compatibility and already has discs
PCSX2 on a computer PC emulation with a user-supplied BIOS and games Requires a suitable computer and a separate setup; it does not use the PS5 A user who already has a capable computer and prefers PC tools
Selected early PS3 models Some models can play PS2 discs, according to the specialist guide Support depends on the exact PS3 model A buyer willing to verify model-level compatibility before purchase

The practical comparison should start with the game, not the hardware brand. Ask whether the title is officially sold, whether you need the original disc, whether you already own suitable equipment and how much troubleshooting you are willing to do. No single route wins for every player.

Cost and ownership questions

The cited material does not provide current hardware prices, so a precise cost comparison would be misleading. Budget for the items your route actually needs: a console or computer, display and connection accessories, the game, and—if using PS5SX2—a console that remains compatible with the required exploit and the time needed to prepare homebrew.

Buying a PS2 disc does not supply a BIOS. PS5SX2 requires both a BIOS dumped from your own PS2 and your own game. Likewise, owning an ISO does not prove that the PS5 optical drive can read the original disc; the CD-versus-DVD distinction still applies.

Questions to answer before you modify anything

  • Is the exact title available as an official PS2 Classic in your region?
  • Do you own an original PS2 from which you can dump the BIOS?
  • Is your game on DVD or CD?
  • What are your PS5 model and current firmware, and is there current evidence that this exact combination is supported?
  • Are you comfortable with an unofficial project whose maintainer reports limited testing and rough edges?
  • Would original PS2 hardware or PCSX2 solve the problem without modifying your PS5?

If the answer to the last question is yes, the alternative may be the more predictable choice. Jailbreaking makes sense only when the target game, existing equipment and willingness to troubleshoot justify the added uncertainty.

Bottom line

Jailbreaking a PS5 solely for PS2 games is an enthusiast project, not a simple backwards-compatibility switch. Sony officially supports PS4 games and a selected PS2 Classics catalogue; PS5SX2 adds an unofficial emulation path that requires a compatible jailbreak, supporting payloads, a personally dumped BIOS and personally supplied games. Its maintainer’s tested setup is a PS5 Pro on firmware 11.40, while other models and firmware remain untested in the published documentation. Reported DVD support is useful, but PS2 games released on CD cannot be read by the PS5 optical drive, and individual game compatibility remains uncertain.
