An older Intel chip can outperform a separate graphics card at Jellyfin transcoding in a particular setup—but the title’s comparison is an anecdote, not a reproducible benchmark. It does not identify either device, the video files, settings, or test conditions, so it cannot establish how many streams either device can handle or prove that older Intel hardware is generally faster.
The useful explanation is that Jellyfin can use Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), and transcoding performance depends on the whole video-processing workload—not just the age or advertised power of a processor or GPU.
Why the exact hardware and workload matter
Jellyfin supports Intel Quick Sync Video as a hardware-acceleration method. Its modified FFmpeg build, jellyfin-ffmpeg, provides access to hardware codecs, video processors, and GPU interfaces. That can let compatible Intel integrated graphics handle video work without relying entirely on the CPU.

Depending on the file and playback conditions, it can include decoding, deinterlacing, scaling or format conversion, HDR or Dolby Vision tone mapping, subtitle burn-in, and encoding. A device may accelerate some stages while others run in software. Partial acceleration can leave substantial work for the CPU and reduce throughput.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
That is why “more streams” only means something when the comparison specifies the source and output codecs, bit depth, resolution and bitrate; the Jellyfin and jellyfin-ffmpeg setup; operating system and drivers; and which stages actually ran on hardware. No stream capacity can be inferred for the unidentified devices in the title.
How the playback client changes the job
Jellyfin’s client capabilities help determine whether a file can play directly or needs conversion. For local media, a client reports supported codecs, resolutions and bitrates; Jellyfin selects an output that fits those constraints. The same server and file can therefore create different workloads for different clients.

Subtitles can also matter. If playback requires subtitles to be burned into the picture, that processing may add work and affect whether the pipeline remains fully accelerated. Jellyfin’s codec support documentation describes client compatibility and subtitle conversion behavior.
Why an older Intel chip may do well—and where it may not
A compatible Intel integrated GPU can be effective for the codecs and processing stages it supports. A separate graphics card may have strong general-purpose performance yet fail to accelerate a particular Jellyfin pipeline fully, or its configuration may not be using the relevant hardware path. The outcome is specific to the devices, software, drivers, and media—not a general rule that an older Intel chip beats graphics cards.

Generation and platform support are important. Jellyfin’s hardware-selection guidance warns that Linux QSV support for Intel integrated graphics from 10th generation and earlier is being lost as Intel’s SDK is deprecated. Check the current compatibility of the exact hardware, operating system, kernel, drivers, Jellyfin version, and jellyfin-ffmpeg configuration before relying on QSV.
Also check the full CPU model: according to Jellyfin’s hardware guide, Intel processor model names ending in “F” indicate no integrated graphics. Such a CPU cannot provide Intel integrated graphics for QSV.

How to make a fair comparison
- Identify both devices. Record the exact Intel CPU and integrated graphics generation, and the exact discrete GPU model. Check whether the Intel processor has integrated graphics.
- Use the same playback workload. Test the same source files with the same clients and output settings. Record input and output codecs, bit depth, resolution, and bitrate.
- Keep the server setup comparable. Record the operating system, kernel, drivers, Jellyfin version, and jellyfin-ffmpeg configuration. Verify that hardware acceleration is enabled and compatible.
- Check which stages are accelerated. During playback transcoding, determine whether decode, tone mapping, scaling, subtitle processing, and encode use hardware or fall back to software. Jellyfin’s hardware-acceleration guide explains the pipeline and setup.
- Measure sustained results. For the identical workload, note whether playback stays real-time and record CPU load. State the conditions and results rather than presenting a stream count without its test setup.
Jellyfin’s documentation recommends triggering playback transcoding to test hardware acceleration. The official material cited here offers compatibility and setup guidance, not a benchmark for the unnamed devices in the title.

If the Intel system handles more simultaneous streams in a controlled test, that would establish an advantage for that workload and configuration. It would not by itself show that older Intel hardware is faster in other codecs, with other clients, or under different operating systems and settings. Without the exact models and repeatable measurements, the title remains a report of one observation rather than a general hardware recommendation.
