The TCL C8L is a compelling premium LCD TV if vivid HDR, broad format support and gaming features matter most. Expert Reviews found standout brightness and colour in its test sample, but the value depends heavily on screen size: its reviewer was less convinced by the 65-inch model’s price, and also flagged bulky design and inconsistent sound.
What is the TCL C8L?
The C8L is TCL’s 2026 Super Quantum Dot LCD television, reviewed in the UK in 55-, 65-, 75-, 85- and 98-inch versions. The listed specification includes 4K/UHD resolution, a native 144Hz refresh rate, four HDMI 2.1 inputs, Google TV, and support for HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
Model names vary by region: FlatpanelsHD identifies C8L as the European name and QM8L as the US name. That does not establish that every feature, software option or hardware detail is identical across regional SKUs, so check the exact model code on the local retailer listing. FlatpanelsHD describes the 2026 model as using a Pentonic 800 chip, alongside Google TV and four HDMI 2.1 ports. FlatpanelsHD’s C8L / QM8L review

HDR brightness
Expert Reviews measured more than 4,500 cd/m² on a 5% HDR window in Standard mode. On a larger 10% HDR window, its result was 3,600 cd/m² in Standard mode and 3,100 cd/m² in Filmmaker Mode. Those figures describe different test-window sizes and picture modes; they should not be treated as one universal peak-brightness rating or a guarantee for every C8L. The results indicate substantial HDR highlight capability, while the lower Filmmaker Mode reading shows that the selected picture mode affects measured output.

Colour
Using Calman Ultimate, Expert Reviews measured essentially 100% P3 coverage and 91.7% BT.2020 coverage on its review sample. These are the outlet’s measurements of that sample, not a manufacturer-wide guarantee. The reviewer particularly praised the set’s vivid colour and overall picture performance. Is the C8L good for gaming and HDR formats?
The listed 144Hz native refresh rate and four HDMI 2.1 inputs make the C8L well-equipped on paper for high-refresh gaming setups. Its HDR format support is also unusually broad: HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are all listed. Expert Reviews praised both gaming support and HDR support. These are specification and review findings; confirm the features available on the precise regional SKU you plan to buy.

How does the C8L compare with the C7L and C8K?
C8L versus C7L
The available review evidence supports a value comparison rather than a full specification-by-specification verdict. Expert Reviews found the 65-inch C8L’s price jump hard to justify against the C7L. The source material does not establish a complete matched test table for brightness, colour, sound, inputs and price across both sets, so treat the C7L comparison as a reason to check the exact size-specific price and features rather than as proof that one is categorically better.
C8L versus C8K
What Hi-Fi notes that the C8L has more dimming zones and introduces Super Quantum Dot technology compared with the previous generation, but its article result does not provide a directly comparable numerical test table. That supports a generational distinction, not a quantified claim about how much better the newer TV performs. What Hi-Fi’s C8L overview

What are the practical drawbacks?
- 65-inch value: The reviewer found the price increase over the smaller model and C7L difficult to justify.
- Sound consistency: Expert Reviews flags inconsistent sound, so buyers prioritising audio should assess their room and expectations rather than assuming the TV’s picture strengths carry over to sound.
- Bulk: The set’s design is cumbersome, a practical consideration for placement and installation.
Who should buy the TCL C8L?
The C8L is most appealing if you want a bright, colour-rich 4K TV with broad HDR format support, a high native refresh rate and multiple HDMI 2.1 inputs. It is less straightforward to recommend at 65 inches if the local price remains close to a more capable size option or the C7L. Compare current prices and exact regional model details, and weigh the set’s sound and physical bulk against your setup.
