Short answer: the original DJI Neo can be flown without a dedicated remote, from the DJI Fly app over Wi-Fi, or with several DJI controllers. The most practical package depends on whether you already own compatible DJI equipment and how many flights you need between charges. DJI rates one battery for approximately 18 minutes, or approximately 17 minutes with propeller guards, but those are controlled manufacturer figures rather than a promise of normal field runtime. The Fly More Combo adds two batteries, a Two-Way Charging Hub, and an RC-N3 controller, making it the convenient choice for a first-time buyer who wants sticks and longer flying sessions.

Decide how you want to control DJI Neo

Neo has three fundamentally different control approaches. You can use palm-based controls for simple, close-range flights; connect a phone to the aircraft through DJI Fly over Wi-Fi; or use a compatible DJI remote controller. These are not interchangeable in capability or setup. A phone is convenient and avoids buying a remote, while a dedicated controller gives you physical sticks and a more conventional piloting interface. Motion and first-person-view (FPV) control adds a separate goggles requirement.

Palm control

Palm control is the least equipment-intensive option. Neo is designed for quick, automated flight modes that can be started from the aircraft or through the supported control workflow. It suits short, nearby shots when convenience matters more than manual precision. It should not be confused with obstacle sensing: Neo has no obstacle-avoidance system.

DJI Fly smartphone control

The original Neo can connect to a smartphone through DJI Fly over Wi-Fi. DJI’s beginner guide describes an effective operating range of up to 50 m, but the actual distance and image quality depend on the phone’s Wi-Fi performance and the surrounding environment. Treat 50 m as a stated maximum under the guide’s conditions, not a universal guarantee. Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight and use an open area.

Dedicated controller

A remote is the better fit if you want physical sticks, repeatable manual inputs, or a control layout that does not depend on a touchscreen. Buying the right package matters: the standard single-product listing and the Fly More Combo are not necessarily the same bundle, and a controller may be absent from the option you select. Verify the exact contents for your region before ordering.

Which controllers are compatible with the original Neo?

DJI’s compatibility information lists three conventional O4-compatible remotes for the Neo series:

Controller What the listing establishes What to check
DJI RC-N3 Listed as a compatible remote controller for DJI Neo Series. It uses a connected phone for the DJI Fly display; confirm that your phone and cable are supported.
DJI RC-N2 Listed as a compatible remote controller. Confirm that the firmware and aircraft pairing process are current for the original Neo.
DJI RC 2 Listed as a compatible remote controller. Check the current firmware and regional availability before buying separately.

If you already own one of these remotes, check the exact model marking rather than assuming that a similar-looking DJI controller will work. Compatibility is model-specific and can change with firmware.

Motion and FPV combinations

DJI lists DJI RC Motion 3, DJI Goggles N3, and DJI Goggles 3 in its motion-control compatibility information. It also lists DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 when used with DJI Goggles N3 or Goggles 3. DJI adds an important restriction: when Neo is used with RC Motion 3 or FPV Remote Controller 3, Goggles 3 is required. In other words, buying a motion controller alone is not a complete FPV setup.

Control setup Additional equipment identified by DJI Important limitation
RC Motion 3 DJI Goggles 3 Goggles 3 is required for this Neo combination.
FPV Remote Controller 3 DJI Goggles N3 or DJI Goggles 3 are listed; DJI’s note requires Goggles 3 for the Neo combination with this controller. Do not assume the controller works as a stand-alone remote without compatible goggles.

The compatibility article covers the Neo series, while this buying guide concerns the original Neo. Confirm that a listing explicitly names original DJI Neo compatibility, particularly for used controllers, batteries, charging hubs, and replacement parts. Similar product names do not prove cross-generation compatibility with newer Neo-family models.

How long does the DJI Neo battery last?

DJI specifies the Intelligent Flight Battery at 1,435 mAh, approximately 45 g, 7.3 V nominal voltage, and 10.5 Wh. The aircraft’s approximate takeoff weight is 135 g. DJI rates maximum flight time at approximately 18 minutes, falling to approximately 17 minutes when propeller guards are fitted.

Specification DJI’s stated figure How to interpret it
Battery capacity 1,435 mAh Nominal battery capacity listed by DJI.
Battery energy 10.5 Wh Use this as the published energy rating, not a prediction of usable flight minutes.
Nominal voltage 7.3 V Manufacturer specification.
Battery weight Approximately 45 g Approximate figure from DJI’s specifications.
Maximum flight time Approximately 18 minutes DJI test result under controlled conditions; not a typical-use guarantee.
Maximum with propeller guards Approximately 17 minutes DJI test result with guards installed.

DJI’s test footnote describes a controlled, windless-equivalent environment, forward flight at 2 m/s, the camera in Photo mode, and a run until forced landing caused by battery depletion. DJI says actual experience varies with environment, use, and firmware. Wind, frequent acceleration, cold conditions, payload or accessories, repeated takeoffs, and safety margins can all leave less usable time than the headline maximum. No independent runtime test is established here, so these numbers should be treated as DJI’s laboratory-style manufacturer figures.

How many flights does one battery provide?

There is no fixed number of flights because flight length and behavior vary. A single battery may cover several very short, automated clips, but a long manual flight consumes most of its charge. Plan around the battery indicator and land with a reserve rather than treating 18 minutes as guaranteed airborne time. Propeller guards reduce DJI’s stated maximum by about one minute, which matters when deciding whether you need spares for a session.

Charging time and the Two-Way Charging Hub

Charging one battery in the aircraft

DJI’s beginner guide says one battery takes approximately one hour to charge through Neo when using a recommended USB Power Delivery charger rated at least 30 W. The result depends on the charger, cable, battery state, and temperature, so “approximately” is significant.

Charging three batteries with the hub

With DJI’s 65 W portable charger, the Two-Way Charging Hub can fully charge three batteries in approximately 60 minutes, according to DJI’s guide. The specification FAQ qualifies simultaneous charging by charger power and supported protocols: with less than 45 W, only two batteries can be charged simultaneously. A 65 W setup therefore matters if you are buying the hub specifically to turn three depleted batteries around in one charging session.

Charging arrangement Published condition Published time or limit
Neo charging one battery Recommended USB PD charger of at least 30 W Approximately one hour
Two-Way Charging Hub with three batteries DJI 65 W portable charger Approximately 60 minutes for a full charge
Hub with a lower-power charger Less than 45 W or unsupported protocol Only two batteries can be charged simultaneously, according to DJI’s FAQ

The hub is more than a convenience when you own multiple batteries: it changes the charging workflow from repeatedly plugging the aircraft in to loading several batteries into one accessory. Check the charger specification as well as the hub; buying the hub without enough power does not reproduce DJI’s three-battery timing.

What is in the Fly More Combo?

Compared with the single-product option, DJI’s beginner guide says the Fly More Combo adds two flight batteries, a Two-Way Charging Hub, and a DJI RC-N3 controller with cable. The DJI Store listing observed on October 13, 2026 showed three batteries total, one RC-N3, one USB-C RC cable, and one Two-Way Charging Hub. That regional listing showed a price of USD $374 and was marked out of stock at the time; price and availability can change, and the listing may not represent your country.

Item Single-product option Fly More Combo listing described above
DJI Neo aircraft Included; exact regional contents should be checked Included
Flight batteries Package-dependent; verify listing Three total on the cited store listing
DJI RC-N3 Package-dependent One controller
USB-C RC cable Package-dependent One cable
Two-Way Charging Hub Package-dependent One hub
Observed price and stock Not stated USD $374; out of stock on the cited regional listing on October 13, 2026

When the combo makes sense

  • Choose it when you want a dedicated RC-N3 controller and do not already own a compatible remote.
  • Choose it when several batteries are more useful than repeatedly waiting for one battery to recharge.
  • Choose it when the hub fits your charging setup, especially if you can supply the required 65 W charger for DJI’s approximately 60-minute three-battery figure.

When to compare other packages

  • If you already own an RC-N3, RC-N2, or RC 2, compare a no-controller package with the cost of only the batteries and hub you need.
  • If you mainly use palm or phone control for short flights, paying for a remote and two extra batteries may not match your use.
  • Do not assume the bundle saves money. Make a current, like-for-like comparison in your currency because regional prices, stock, and included accessories change.

First-use setup: activation, phone, and firmware

DJI requires first-use activation in DJI Fly. Keep the mobile device connected to the internet during activation, then complete the aircraft and controller pairing procedure shown in the app. The exact screens can change with app and firmware versions, so follow the current on-screen prompts rather than an old video.

  1. Check the phone before opening the box. DJI’s DJI Fly page publishes minimum operating-system versions and recommended device models. Those lists can change; verify your current phone against DJI’s support page before buying.
  2. Install DJI Fly from DJI’s current official source. Sign in or create the required account if prompted, and allow the permissions the app needs for connection and media handling.
  3. Connect to the internet for activation. Power the Neo and, if applicable, the RC-N3 or another compatible controller. Keep the phone online while DJI Fly activates the aircraft.
  4. Update firmware when DJI Fly offers it. Compatibility and performance can depend on firmware, particularly when pairing an existing controller or goggles.
  5. Pair the selected control system. For phone control, connect to Neo through the app’s Wi-Fi workflow. For a remote, connect the phone to the controller with the supplied or supported cable and complete pairing. For motion or FPV operation, use the required goggles combination identified by DJI.
  6. Test in an open area. Confirm control response, video link, battery status, and return or landing behavior before attempting a longer flight. Keep Neo within visual line of sight.

DJI’s downloads page lists User Manual version 1.2 dated November 6, 2024, and Safety Guidelines version 1.2 dated February 19, 2025. Use the latest versions available for your region, since support documents and compatible-device lists may be revised.

Limitations that should change your buying decision

No obstacle avoidance

DJI’s official FAQ answers the question “Does DJI Neo support obstacle avoidance?” with “No.” That is a decisive limitation. Propeller guards protect the propellers in some incidental-contact situations, but they do not make Neo an obstacle-sensing aircraft. Automated subject tracking or palm-based flight also does not mean the aircraft can detect and avoid trees, walls, wires, people, or other hazards.

Visual line of sight is still your responsibility

DJI recommends flying in an open area and within visual line of sight. The app’s stated up-to-50-m effective range does not override that guidance, and a strong Wi-Fi connection does not make an obstructed or crowded flight safe.

Original Neo versus newer Neo-family products

This guide covers the original DJI Neo, not Neo 2. Product names, batteries, hubs, controllers, and support pages can look similar across generations. Before buying a spare or used accessory, require the listing to identify original Neo compatibility; do not infer it from the word “Neo” alone.

Which buyer profile fits which setup?

Short, simple clips

If you want quick nearby shots and do not need manual stick control, start by comparing the aircraft-only or phone-oriented option. Confirm that your phone meets DJI Fly requirements and accept the Wi-Fi range and image-quality limitations.

New pilot who wants conventional controls

The Fly More Combo is the straightforward package when you need an RC-N3, three batteries, and a hub in one purchase. Check local stock and the exact regional contents; the cited USD $374 listing was out of stock on October 13, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Existing DJI owner

Check whether your controller is specifically RC-N3, RC-N2, or RC 2, then verify current firmware and pairing support. If you already have a compatible remote, compare the price of a package without one and add only the batteries or hub required for your flying schedule.

FPV or motion-focused pilot

Budget for the complete compatible combination, not just the motion controller. DJI’s note requires Goggles 3 when using Neo with RC Motion 3 or FPV Remote Controller 3. Goggles, controller, aircraft, firmware, and regional availability all need to line up.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm the listing is for the original DJI Neo rather than Neo 2 or another Neo-family model.
  • Choose palm, smartphone, conventional remote, or FPV control before selecting a package.
  • If buying a remote, verify RC-N3, RC-N2, or RC 2 compatibility; do not rely on appearance or brand alone.
  • For RC Motion 3 or FPV Remote Controller 3, confirm the required Goggles 3 combination.
  • Check your phone’s current DJI Fly operating-system and device support.
  • Plan around DJI’s approximately 18-minute maximum, or approximately 17 minutes with propeller guards, as a controlled manufacturer result rather than normal guaranteed runtime.
  • For three-battery charging, verify that the charger supports DJI’s approximately 60-minute hub claim; below 45 W, DJI says only two batteries can charge simultaneously.
  • Check local price, stock, package contents, and return terms immediately before purchase.
  • Remember that Neo has no obstacle avoidance and should be flown in an open area within visual line of sight.

Bottom line

Buy the Fly More Combo when you want physical controls and several ready-to-fly batteries in one package. Buy a simpler package when phone or palm control meets your needs, or when you already own a compatible remote and can source only the batteries or hub required. Whatever you choose, verify original-Neo compatibility, check DJI Fly support for your phone, and treat the 18-minute figure as DJI’s controlled maximum—not the amount of flight time every outing will deliver.
