Buy Subnautica 2 now if you want to play an evolving underwater survival game, experiment with online co-op and help shape development. Wait if you need a finished campaign, polished performance or the complete planned content set. The Early Access build released on May 14, 2026, and its price is expected to rise before the full release.
What you are buying on May 14, 2026
Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure set on a new alien world. You can play alone or in online co-op with up to three friends, for four players in one session. The Steam and Xbox listings identify multiplayer as cross-platform, so players on the supported PC and Xbox versions can join the same co-op game.
The current release is not the finished game. Unknown Worlds describes the build as Early Access and says it contains multiplayer, several biomes, some narrative content, creatures and craftable items. Additional biomes, creatures, craftables, features, story content, bug fixes and optimization are planned. The exact final feature list and release schedule are not fixed.
Unknown Worlds says, in its Steam Early Access questionnaire, that development is expected to take about two to three years based on its previous Early Access projects. That is an estimate, not a promised version 1.0 date. The developer also warns that the game will be imperfect while the community helps shape it.

Buy now or wait?
Use the following decision table rather than treating Early Access as a simple discount. The right choice depends on what you want from the game today.

A purchase is easier to justify when you specifically want the current exploration and co-op sandbox. It is harder to justify if your enjoyment depends on a complete, uninterrupted story or predictable performance.
How multiplayer and cross-platform play work
Player count
Each online session supports a maximum of four players: one host and up to three friends. The game also supports solo play, so an internet connection is not required for the basic idea of playing alone, although the PC listing still specifies broadband internet as a requirement for the product.

The Steam and Xbox store pages list cross-platform multiplayer. In practical terms, a player using the Steam PC release and a player using an Xbox-supported release can play together, provided both are using compatible, up-to-date builds and their accounts can use the relevant online services.
Xbox online requirements
On Xbox, console online multiplayer requires one of Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. This requirement is separate from the game’s purchase price. Check the current Xbox store terms before buying because subscription names, benefits and eligibility can change.

Cloud play and Play Anywhere
The Xbox listing identifies cloud play and Xbox Play Anywhere support. Cloud streaming is listed with Game Pass Ultimate. If you want to stream a purchased copy using Essential or Premium, the listing says you must own the game; a subscription alone does not replace the purchase for that use. Confirm the current cloud entitlement in your region before relying on streaming.

Choose Steam when your PC comfortably exceeds the recommended specification and you prefer PC controls or settings. Choose Xbox when console convenience, Play Anywhere or cloud access matters more and you already meet the subscription requirements for online play.

Before installing on PC
- Confirm that Windows reports at least 12 GB of system memory and that your graphics card has the required 6 GB of video memory for the minimum tier.
- Reserve more than the stated 50 GB if your drive is nearly full; updates need working space even though the store lists 50 GB for installation.
- Use the recommended tier as the safer target for an Early Access game whose optimization is still changing. Meeting minimum specifications does not guarantee smooth play.
- Update Windows and your graphics driver before troubleshooting. If the game performs poorly, lower resolution and graphics settings first, then check for later patches rather than assuming your hardware is defective.
No official benchmark, frame-rate target or resolution guarantee is supplied here, so do not buy a graphics card solely on the expectation of a particular performance number.
Stable and Experimental builds on Xbox
Most buyers should begin with the Stable build. Xbox Experimental builds are intended for players who knowingly accept pre-release changes and instability.

How to decide whether to use Experimental
- Install Xbox Insider Hub and verify that your account is at least 18 years old.
- Confirm that you own the game or have Game Pass Ultimate, as required by the Experimental listing.
- Back up or finish any Stable session you care about before switching, because the two branches use separate saves.
- Coordinate with friends first. Everyone in the session must use the same Experimental branch; a Stable player cannot join that Experimental session.
- Return to Stable for your main long-term save if a test update causes crashes, severe bugs or unwanted balance changes.
Experimental access is optional. It does not turn Early Access into a finished version, and it is a poor choice for a group that wants a single shared save without testing interruptions.

Price, price changes and pre-order status
The Xbox US store currently lists Subnautica 2 at $29.99 or more. Regional pricing can differ, and store prices or subscription terms may change. Unknown Worlds states that the price will increase after Early Access, but it has not established the eventual amount or the date of that increase.
As of April 16, 2026, the official help center said there were no plans for a pre-order and recommended wishlisting instead. Do not treat a third-party listing as confirmation of an official pre-order. A wishlist is the reliable way to receive store notifications while the release remains in Early Access.
What the current content scope means for your first purchase
There is enough to play, but not the whole journey
The available build includes several biomes, creatures, craftables, multiplayer and some narrative. That gives you the core survival-adventure loop and a basis for cooperative exploration, but it does not represent the final breadth of the world or story.
Future additions can change your existing routine
Planned content includes new environments, creatures, craftables, features and narrative, alongside bug fixes and optimization. New systems can alter balance, progression and the way you approach an existing save. If you dislike rebuilding after major updates, wait or treat your first world as a temporary test rather than a permanent campaign.

Expect changing behavior
Early Access means mechanics may be rebalanced, unfinished features may be replaced and bugs may affect saves or multiplayer. Keep expectations aligned with a work in progress, especially during the first hours when a polished release would normally teach systems and pacing more consistently.

Assuming the lowest PC specification guarantees good performance
The minimum table only establishes the hardware needed to run the product under the store’s stated baseline. It does not establish a frame-rate target. If performance is a deciding factor, use the recommended processor, memory and graphics tier and leave room for updates.
Buying an Xbox copy without checking online access
Buying the game does not by itself satisfy the Xbox console requirement for online multiplayer. Verify that your account has Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate before planning a co-op session.
Expecting a subscription to cover every cloud scenario
Cloud play is associated with Game Pass Ultimate. Essential and Premium users need to own the game to stream it, according to the Xbox listing. Check the entitlement shown on your account instead of assuming every Game Pass tier behaves the same way.
Mixing Stable and Experimental players
Branch mismatch is a session-level problem, not a network-speed problem. Have the whole group select the same branch and remember that Experimental progress is stored separately.

Interpreting the development estimate as a launch promise
The two-to-three-year statement is an expectation based on prior projects, while Unknown Worlds explicitly notes that the duration is difficult to predict. Plan around the build you can play today, not an assumed date for the finished edition.
A practical purchase checklist
- Decide whether partial content and changing systems are acceptable for your preferred way to play.
- Choose solo, co-op or both; if co-op matters, confirm your friends’ platforms and online-service access.
- On PC, compare your complete system against every minimum requirement, not just the graphics card.
- On Xbox, check whether your account has the Game Pass tier needed for console online multiplayer.
- Budget using your region’s current store price and remember that the Early Access price is not guaranteed to remain.
- For cloud play, verify whether your subscription permits streaming and whether ownership is required for your tier.
- Start with Stable unless you specifically want test builds and accept separate saves.
- Wishlist the game if you are waiting for a later content milestone or an official price and release update.
Who should buy now?
Buy now if your priority is access to the evolving world, early multiplayer with friends or the opportunity to provide useful feedback while the game is being built. The current price can also matter if you are comfortable with the developer’s stated future increase and with regional pricing differences.
Wait if your purchase decision depends on a complete campaign, a known final feature list, stable performance or a single long-term save that will not be affected by development changes. Waiting also makes sense if you cannot meet the PC requirements, do not have the Xbox subscription needed for online play, or have no interest in testing unfinished systems.
