Before buying, confirm which game your group plays and which rules version or Star Wars RPG line it expects. D&D and Star Wars rulebooks are not interchangeable, and even Star Wars books can belong to distinct game lines. Ask your Dungeon Master or Game Master what the group already owns and plans to use.
Before you choose a book, match it to your table
Start with the game, rules line, and your role in the group. A player looking to create a character may need a different reference from a Dungeon Master or a group building a shared library. For Star Wars, identify the specific RPG line before choosing a core book. If you are buying for a group, check what the Game Master already uses to avoid bringing home a book for a different rules system.
- Game: Is the group playing Dungeons & Dragons or a Star Wars RPG?
- Rules line or version: Which rules does the group plan to use?
- Role: Are you a player, the Dungeon Master or Game Master, or buying a reference for everyone?
- Entry point: Do you need a full core rulebook, or is there a suitable beginner product?
- Format and location: Do you want a physical book, digital access, or a bundle, and can you buy that format in your region?
Which D&D books belong to the 2024 rules?
Wizards of the Coast describes the 2024 core rulebooks as revised and expanded fifth-edition books, not a new edition. The core set is the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual. The Player’s Handbook is the natural first book for a player who wants character-creation and play rules; a Dungeon Master or group can decide whether the other core references suit their needs.

Will older fifth-edition adventures work?
Wizards says existing adventures and supplements are compatible with the 2024 core rules. That is useful if you already own fifth-edition material, but compatibility does not decide which rules your table will use. Check with the Dungeon Master before buying a book for a campaign already underway. The D&D Beyond/Wizards FAQ, published August 18, 2022 and updated June 9, 2023, says the 2024 core books are not a new edition and are compatible with books players already enjoy.
Where and how can you buy D&D books?
Physical and digital options depend on region and seller. According to the D&D Beyond purchase FAQ, the Marketplace sells physical books and physical-plus-digital bundles to US customers, and sells digital-only D&D Beyond content worldwide. The international D&D Store sells physical-plus-digital bundles to non-US customers. Local game stores sell physical books without digital copies or bundle options. Check current storefront terms and local stock before ordering, since availability can change.

Which Star Wars RPG rulebook should you buy?
“Star Wars RPG” can mean different game lines. Choose the campaign style and line your group intends to play, then get the book for that line. A core book for one line should not be treated as the rules for another.

The official Force and Destiny Core Rulebook page describes it as the launching point for a campaign in that line. Buy it when your group plans to play Force and Destiny, rather than as a generic Star Wars rulebook.

Edge of the Empire
Edge of the Empire has a Beginner Game, presented as an introduction to roleplaying concepts, and a separate Core Rulebook for starting or continuing campaigns. If you are new to tabletop roleplaying, see whether the beginner product suits you before committing to a full core book.
