Before you pay for a used PS5 or Xbox Series X, verify that the exact console powers on, produces a stable picture, accepts input from its controller, connects to the internet, and—if it has a disc drive—loads a suitable game disc. Ask for video evidence before meeting, then test the console yourself if possible. If you cannot test it, compare the seller’s return terms and warranty with a certified-refurbished option; a lower asking price is not the whole cost of a riskier purchase.

That practical check matters whether you are asking, “What should I check before buying a used PS5?” or “What should I look for when buying an Xbox Series X?” The short answer is: inspect the exact unit, verify the handoff and service access, and compare the recourse attached to the specific offer—not just the price on the listing.

Decide what kind of purchase you are making

“Used,” “renewed,” and “certified refurbished” do not promise the same inspection, support, or ability to return a faulty console. A private-sale console may be cheaper, but you may have little recourse if it fails after handoff. A certified-refurbished listing can provide a more defined testing and warranty path, though you still need to read the exact regional terms and listing details.

Compare the specific offers on inspection evidence, warranty and return deadline, included accessories, condition, and whether you can test before paying. There is no universal fair price or savings percentage established for used PS5 or Series X consoles; judge the price against the condition and protection actually offered.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Think of the decision as two separate questions. First, does this exact console appear to work today? Second, if a problem appears later, who is responsible and what can you do? A good video or in-person test helps with the first question; a written return policy or warranty addresses the second. Neither replaces the other. A working demonstration does not create a warranty, and a warranty does not mean you should ignore the unit’s condition or the listing’s contents.

What certified refurbished means in the cited listings

Microsoft describes its Xbox Certified Refurbished consoles as screened, repaired, tested, cleaned, and repackaged, and says they include a 90-day console warranty. Its Microsoft Store listing identifies an Xbox Wireless Controller and Ultra High Speed HDMI cable as in-box items. Stock can change; that listing showed the console out of stock when accessed. Check availability, contents, and terms on the current page before relying on them. Microsoft Certified Refurbished Xbox guidance and the Microsoft Store listing are US pages.

Sony’s buying guidance for the United States says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty under its stated policy, while certified-refurbished PlayStation products include warranty. The cited page does not establish a current PS5 refurbished inventory, a specific warranty duration, or terms outside the US. Confirm the warranty and consumer protections applicable to the country and seller in your offer. Sony’s PlayStation buying guidance.

Do not assume that a marketplace’s “renewed” label means the same thing as either manufacturer’s certified-refurbished program. Ask who inspected the console, what “tested” covers, how long the warranty lasts, which faults are covered, and how to start a return. Record the deadline and any conditions in writing. The details are listing- and region-specific; the certification label alone does not answer every question about service or returns.

Before meeting a private seller or ordering

  1. Check the seller and the return route. Review ratings and feedback, and prefer a seller or marketplace with a clear written return policy if you cannot inspect the console first. Sony advises buyers to assess seller reputation and warns that unauthorized sellers can expose buyers to risk. Keep the listing and any promises about condition or included items. Before paying, know who handles a return, how long you have, and what condition the console must be in. If an offer has no practical return route, treat that as part of its risk, not as an incidental detail.
  2. Ask for a current video of the exact unit. Request a continuous or clearly attributable demonstration of power-on, a working display, internet connection, the included controller, relevant ports and buttons, and the disc drive if present. Sony recommends video proof but also says an in-person check can reveal issues a video cannot. Ask that the console and its identification label be visible enough to connect the demonstration to the offered unit. A clip of another console, a brief startup, or a still image does not demonstrate that it stays on, runs a game, or accepts input.
  3. Clarify the exact version and contents. Ask whether the PS5 is a disc-drive or Digital Edition, or confirm the offered Series X model; ask which controller, power cable, HDMI cable, stand or base, and extras are included. Ask whether it has been repaired and whether the seller has a receipt or written warranty proof. Do not treat a serial-number check by itself as proof of ownership, clean service status, or warranty coverage. The listing should match the unit and accessories you receive; at handoff, count the promised items rather than relying on the photo or description.
  4. Look for tampering or missing identification. Ask the seller not to conceal the console label in the demonstration. Sony cautions buyers to check that serial information has not been removed and that warranty seals are not broken. Microsoft places the Series X model and serial label at the back right of the console; its location helps identify the label but does not establish ownership or warranty by itself. Treat a missing label, visible tampering, or damage as something to clarify and inspect rather than something a serial number lookup can automatically resolve.
  5. Agree on a test and handoff. If meeting in person, arrange access to a display, power, and internet so you can run the checks below. If the seller will not permit reasonable testing, weigh that against the return terms and price rather than assuming the video proves everything works. If ordering online, ask for equivalent evidence and make sure you can inspect the received unit within the stated return window.

It is reasonable to ask a seller to demonstrate the console rather than accept a general assurance that it “works.” Keep communications and listing details, including promises about repair history, accessories, or a return arrangement. If an answer is vague, you may not be able to resolve it after the sale. A lower price only compensates for uncertainty if you are comfortable bearing that uncertainty.

Test the console in person before paying

Use a known-good display, cable, game, and network where possible. Test the actual console and included controller, not a similar unit or a seller’s verbal assurance. Microsoft’s Series X testing procedure covers power, image, controller synchronization, network, system update, gameplay, audio, USB, and console buttons; Sony recommends an in-person check for image quality, overheating, and damage that video may not show.

Work through the checks in a consistent order: physical condition, startup and display, controller, connections and network, then gameplay and the drive. That makes it easier to notice what failed and to explain it to the seller before money changes hands. If you cannot test one item—perhaps there is no suitable display or internet connection—make a note of that gap and account for it in your decision instead of counting it as a pass.

1. Inspect the shell, ports, and identification

Look for cracks, dents, loose or bent connectors, visible wear, signs of tampering, and missing or altered serial information. Check the HDMI, USB, and power connections you plan to use. Damage can be cosmetic, but damaged connectors or evidence of an opened console deserve explanation and a working test before purchase.

Inspect the ports rather than only checking that the console looks clean in a listing photo. A damaged or loose connection can affect the very functions you need for the test. Look over the label and the surrounding shell for signs that identification has been removed or the unit has been tampered with. Sony’s guidance specifically calls out removed serial numbers and broken warranty seals; neither a reassuring seller description nor a visible number alone establishes the console’s ownership, service status, or warranty.

2. Power on and check the picture

Connect the console to a display using HDMI, turn it on, and confirm it reaches the home screen with a stable, clear image. Watch for visual artifacts, interruptions, repeated shutdowns, or unusual fan or component noises. A console that starts but cannot maintain a clear picture or stay powered on has not passed the basic check.

Use the picture test to verify more than a momentary logo. Allow the console to reach its menu, then observe whether the image remains clear while you navigate and play. Microsoft’s Series X procedure checks for the Xbox logo and a clear image and asks testers to note unusual sounds. Sony advises an in-person check because image quality, overheating, and physical damage can be hard to judge in video. If the image cuts out or the console shuts down repeatedly, do not dismiss it as a harmless quirk without a clear explanation and a successful retest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Pair the controller and test inputs

Sync the included controller and navigate menus, then try its inputs during gameplay. Check that buttons and sticks respond and that the console receives commands consistently. Test the console’s power and eject buttons, and connect a USB device or controller cable to the USB port you expect to use. If the included controller is faulty or missing, factor the replacement into the offer rather than assuming it is included.

Testing in a game is useful because it lets you see whether input remains responsive while the console is running software, not just while the seller moves through a menu. Try the buttons and sticks you normally use and make sure the console consistently reacts. Also check that the controller can sync as expected; a controller shown beside the console is not proof that it is paired or included. Confirm whether its cable or other promised accessories are part of the deal.

4. Test the network and online access

Connect over Wi-Fi or Ethernet and confirm the console can reach its online services. If practical, check for a system update and launch a game. A successful connection is useful evidence at the time of testing, but it cannot guarantee that the console will never face a later service restriction.

For Xbox, Microsoft’s test procedure includes network connectivity and a system update; Sony likewise recommends checking the PlayStation’s online service access. If an update is available and the test permits it, checking that the console can proceed gives you more evidence than simply seeing a network icon. Do not let a seller’s claim that it “has always been online” replace your own test. At the same time, understand the limit: a successful connection confirms access during the check, not a promise about every future service decision.

5. Load a suitable game disc if there is a drive

On a disc-drive PS5, test with a known-good PS5 game, Blu-ray, or DVD. Sony says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so those are not valid tests. On Series X, Microsoft’s test calls for inserting a game disc or launching a digital game and confirming that it loads and runs. Do not infer that a drive works merely because it accepts a disc.

Use a disc known to work in another compatible device if possible, and confirm that the console reads and launches it. Inserting a disc only checks that it can enter the drive; it does not confirm that the game loads or runs. If you cannot bring a disc, Microsoft’s Series X procedure allows testing by launching a digital game instead, but that does not test the physical drive. On a PS5 Digital Edition there is no disc drive to test, so make sure the version matches what you intended to buy.

6. Listen and observe during gameplay

Let a game run long enough to check that the picture remains stable and the console does not repeatedly shut down. Listen for unusual fan or component noise. A brief power-on demonstration will not expose every intermittent fault, but gameplay gives you more information than a home-screen check alone.

There is no manufacturer-backed used-console failure rate in the reviewed guidance, so a short test should not be presented as a guarantee that the unit is fault-free. It is a practical screen for obvious problems: unstable display, failure to launch a game, unresponsive controls, abnormal noises, or shutdowns during the demonstration. If a problem appears, pause and ask the seller to explain it; do not pay on the assumption that it will disappear later.

Check PlayStation account handoff and service risk

For a used PlayStation, ask the seller to deactivate the console and confirm they no longer have access to it. Sony says a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Check online access before paying where possible, but treat that as a point-in-time test—not a guarantee against a later restriction. Sony’s guidance is at PlayStation Support.

Do not rely on the seller’s account remaining on the device as a substitute for a proper handoff. You need to be able to set up and use the console under your own account, and the seller should not retain access to it. A refused or incomplete handoff is a reason to delay the purchase until it is resolved.

Service access is separate from ordinary hardware testing. A console may power on and display a picture while the account handoff or service status remains unresolved. Ask directly whether the seller has deactivated it and no longer has access, and test online access where practical. Sony’s warning is important: a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. That does not mean every used PlayStation is at risk, and a successful online test does not prove that no later restriction can ever occur. Treat it as a specific risk to discuss before paying, not as something a brief network check can eliminate.

Choose between a private sale and refurbished listing

What to compare Private-party used console Certified-refurbished route in cited guidance
Inspection confidence Depends on the seller’s video, your in-person test, and the seller’s candor. Microsoft says its Xbox Certified Refurbished units are screened, repaired, tested, cleaned, and repackaged. Sony says certified-refurbished PlayStation products include warranty, but the cited US page does not detail a specific PS5 inspection process.
Warranty Sony’s US guidance says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty under its stated policy. Warranty terms for an individual listing depend on the seller and region. Microsoft states Xbox Certified Refurbished consoles include a 90-day warranty. Sony’s cited US guidance says certified-refurbished PlayStation products include warranty but does not state its duration there. Confirm local terms.
Return path Depends on the seller and platform; obtain the deadline and conditions in writing before purchase. Read the current listing and applicable regional terms; certification alone does not tell you every return condition.
Included items Ask the seller to identify every included item and verify it at handoff. The cited Microsoft Store Series X listing names an Xbox Wireless Controller and Ultra High Speed HDMI cable; contents can vary by listing and availability.
Availability Depends on the individual seller. The cited Microsoft Store listing showed the console out of stock when accessed. Sony’s cited page does not establish current PS5 refurbished stock.

These policies are tied to the cited US guidance and pages; they do not establish terms for every region, reseller, or individual offer. Read the exact warranty, return policy, and condition label before ordering. A certified label is not a reason to skip checking what is in the box or what happens if the unit fails.

For a fair comparison, line up offers on the same practical axes rather than treating the labels as a ranking. For inspection confidence, compare a private seller’s video and your own test with the documented refurbishment steps the listing describes. For warranty and returns, compare the written duration, covered faults, responsible seller, and return deadline. For contents, compare the actual controller, HDMI and power cables, stand or base, and any extras. For condition, compare working ports, stable display, noise, controller response, network access, drive function, and—on PlayStation—the account handoff. Finally, weigh the price against the gaps in evidence and recourse.

Certification does not guarantee the same package on every listing, and the cited Microsoft Store contents are not a promise about every seller or region. Likewise, Sony’s US buying guidance is not a complete statement of consumer rights or warranty rules everywhere. Check the current page and the exact terms shown for the product you can actually buy. Manufacturer stock can change; the cited Microsoft Store listing was out of stock when accessed, and Sony’s cited page does not establish current PS5 refurbished availability.

Make the final price decision

Set the value of each offer by adding the practical cost of anything missing or uncertain, then compare the available recourse. A cheaper console may cease to be the better deal if it lacks a controller or cable, cannot be tested, has damaged ports, or carries no workable return path. Conversely, a private sale with a thorough demonstration, complete accessories, and successful testing may suit a buyer willing to accept less formal protection.

There is no researched standard discount that makes a used console a good deal, and no sourced failure-rate figure to apply to one. Avoid deciding that a listing is safe because it is a certain percentage below another offer. Instead, ask what you are getting for the price: a console that has passed the checks, all items promised, a clear handoff, and a practical path if a fault appears. An offer that cannot answer those questions may still be a choice for a buyer accepting more risk, but the uncertainty should be explicit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check before buying a used PS5?

Ask for video of the exact console powering on, displaying an image, connecting online, and using its controller and relevant ports. If possible, inspect it in person: check the shell, ports, label and seals; confirm a stable HDMI picture; pair and test the controller; connect to the network; and test the disc drive with a known-good game, Blu-ray, or DVD if it has one. Ask the seller to deactivate it and confirm they no longer have access.

What should I look for when buying a used Xbox Series X?

Follow Microsoft’s testing areas: power and clear image, controller synchronization and inputs, network connection, system update, gameplay and audio, USB, and power/eject buttons. Inspect the console and ports for visible damage or wear, note unusual fan or component sounds, and insert a game disc or launch a digital game to confirm it loads and runs.

How can I test a used PS5 disc drive?

Use a known-good PS5 game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD, then confirm it loads. Sony says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so those do not provide a valid drive test. A Digital Edition has no disc drive to test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a successful online test guarantee a used PlayStation will always have service access?

No. It confirms access at the time you test it, not that a later restriction is impossible. Sony says a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Ask the seller to deactivate the console and confirm they no longer have access.

Is certified refurbished better than privately used?

It may provide more documented testing and warranty recourse, but compare the exact listing. Microsoft says Xbox Certified Refurbished consoles are screened, repaired, tested, cleaned, and repackaged and include a 90-day warranty. Sony’s US guidance says certified-refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty, without specifying its duration on the cited page. Compare those terms, return policies, contents, condition, and price with the private offer.

Does a used PS5 or Xbox Series X have a standard discount or failure rate?

The manufacturer sources reviewed do not establish a universal fair price, savings percentage, or used-console failure rate. Compare the condition and protections of the exact offers rather than relying on an assumed average.

The Bottom Line

Before paying, test the exact console as far as you can: power, stable HDMI picture, controller, ports, network, gameplay, and a suitable disc if it has a drive. For a used PlayStation, also confirm the seller has deactivated it and no longer has access. Compare written returns, warranty, condition, and included items with any certified-refurbished alternative; do not let a low asking price stand in for proof or protection.
