Do not buy a Switch game simply because its store page says “roguelike,” “roguelite,” or “Metroidvania.” Those labels overlap, and publishers use them loosely. The useful questions are more specific: what disappears when a run ends, what carries into the next attempt, and whether new abilities open routes through a connected world.
Among the games covered here, Dead Cells is the clearest documented hybrid, Rogue Legacy 2 is the stronger fit for randomized runs with persistent progression and adjustable challenge, and Axiom Verge is an exploration-focused Metroidvania comparison rather than an evidenced roguelike. Use the checks below to match the structure you want before paying.
What “roguelike Metroidvania” means on Switch
There is no single definition that every store, publisher, or guide applies consistently. Contemporary coverage often treats “roguelike” and “roguelite” as overlapping terms. A practical buying test is more reliable than the label:
- Run reset: identify what is lost when your character dies or a run ends.
- Persistent progression: identify upgrades, abilities, characters, currency, or equipment that remain available on later attempts.
- Ability-gated exploration: check whether acquiring an ability lets you reach previously blocked areas in an interconnected world.
A game can strongly emphasize one axis without equally emphasizing the others. A randomized run structure does not automatically make a game a traditional Metroidvania, and a large map with unlockable abilities does not automatically make it a roguelike.

Roguelike versus roguelite in practical terms
For a buyer, the key distinction is persistence rather than a marketing argument about terminology. If death removes nearly everything and every attempt starts from the same baseline, the experience will feel more severe and restart-focused. If permanent upgrades or abilities accumulate, failed attempts can still move the overall game forward. Rogue Legacy 2 is explicitly described on Nintendo’s listing as “a genealogical rogue-LITE,” and its systems illustrate the persistent-progression side of the spectrum.
Metroidvania in practical terms
The exploration side usually involves an interconnected setting, obstacles that initially block progress, and abilities or tools that change where you can go. Nintendo’s description of Axiom Verge emphasizes a large labyrinthine world, weapons, items, abilities, and puzzles that can be solved by using glitches. That is a clear example of the ability-and-map side of the comparison, even though the cited listing does not establish it as a roguelike.
The five checks to make before buying
1. Find the exact death penalty
Store descriptions often say that runs are randomized without explaining the emotional cost of failure. Look for a direct answer to these questions:

- Are weapons, relics, or other run-only items lost?
- Do currencies or upgrade resources carry over?
- Can you resume a run, or must you begin another attempt?
Rogue Legacy 2 provides a useful model: relics affect the current run but are lost if the hero dies, while other upgrades and heirlooms are permanent. That split creates repeated uncertainty without making every failed attempt completely empty.
2. Separate permanent abilities from temporary advantages
An ability that remains available after death changes exploration for the whole game. A relic or power that exists only during the current attempt changes that attempt. Do not treat both as “progress” without checking which category the listing describes.

- 17 Levels - Each one with its own atmosphere, foes and secrets to discover
- 5 Bosses - Made by the most sadistic of the devs, raised on the salt of the testers
- 150 or so weapons and skills - Spears, swords, bows, magic spells, shields, pets, frying pans etc; You name it, we got it
- Unlock the four original Dead Cells DLCs, giving you late-game content plus an entire new pathway to follow, with an alternative ending and tons of new enemies, weapons & outfits
- Battle through the corridors of Dracula’s Castle; Wield weapons against monsters to reach the throne room of the Dark Lord
In Rogue Legacy 2, heirlooms permanently give heroes new abilities. The game also has persistent upgrades and heirs with different traits and abilities. Relics, by contrast, are temporary and disappear when the hero dies. If you want every run to expand the permanent toolkit, this distinction matters more than the genre tag.
3. Check whether exploration is fixed, randomized, or both
A traditional ability-gated map invites you to remember locations and return after gaining a new power. A randomized run asks you to read a changing layout and make decisions with incomplete information. Some hybrids combine those ideas, but a listing may emphasize one more than the other.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Nintendo describes Rogue Legacy 2 as having randomly generated regions and adventures. Nintendo’s Axiom Verge page instead foregrounds a large labyrinthine world and puzzles. These descriptions support different expectations: repeated, changing attempts in the first case; deliberate map exploration and problem-solving in the second.
4. Look for explicit difficulty controls
“Challenging” is too vague to guide a purchase. Check whether the game exposes settings that address the particular obstacle you find frustrating. Rogue Legacy 2 includes House Rules that let players adjust contact damage, global damage, health, and flight for difficult platforming sections. Those are concrete controls, not a general promise that the game is accessible.
5. Verify the edition and your Switch model
Before checkout, confirm whether the offer is digital or physical, which regional edition it represents, what languages are included, and whether it is listed for your Switch model. Platform compatibility and inventory can change, so use the live store page for the region where you will play.

Dead Cells: the clearest cited hybrid
Dead Cells is the strongest match in this set if you specifically want a game described as combining both sides of the hybrid. Nintendo Life characterizes it as a blend of roguelite and Metroidvania elements and uses the term “roguevania.” That wording directly answers the genre question more clearly than a listing that mentions only one half.
What the edition evidence tells you
The official product page lists both Nintendo Switch eShop availability and Nintendo Switch physical editions. It gives separate physical release dates by region: August 7, 2018 for Asia, August 17, 2018 for Europe, and August 21, 2018 for America. The eShop entry lists an original Switch release date of August 7, 2018.
Those dates identify editions, not current stock or current pricing. If you want a cartridge, confirm that the live listing is the physical edition for your region rather than assuming that an eShop page and a boxed copy are interchangeable.
What is not established here
The cited descriptions do not specify exactly which items survive a failed run, how abilities are organized, or how difficulty settings work. Do not infer those details from the “roguevania” label alone. If a particular death penalty or accessibility option is decisive for you, inspect the current product information or an authoritative manual before purchasing.

Rogue Legacy 2: randomized attempts with a permanent layer
Rogue Legacy 2 is the most clearly documented choice for buyers who want changing runs but also want progress to accumulate. Nintendo’s official listing describes randomly generated regions and adventures, persistent upgrades, heirs with different traits and abilities, and heirlooms that permanently give heroes new abilities.
What you keep and what you lose
The listing draws a firm line between temporary and permanent systems. Relics affect the current run but are lost if the hero dies. Persistent upgrades remain, and heirlooms permanently grant new abilities. That means a failed attempt can remove your temporary build while leaving the broader progression path intact.
This is the question to ask yourself: do you want the tension of making decisions with a temporary loadout, or do you want every death to reset the character almost completely? The documented systems place Rogue Legacy 2 on the persistent-progression side of that choice.
Why heirs matter to the buying decision
Different heirs have different traits and abilities. The result is not simply one character repeating one identical attempt. Because the listing does not provide a complete trait catalogue or balance data, you should treat this as a structural description rather than a promise about which heir will be strongest or easiest.

House Rules and difficult sections
House Rules are unusually concrete for a short store description. They can adjust contact damage, global damage, health, and flight, including settings aimed at difficult platforming sections. If you need flexibility around collisions, incoming damage, survivability, or aerial movement, these are the relevant controls to verify in the current version.

Switch edition and compatibility details
Nintendo identifies the Switch release as a digital edition released November 9, 2022. The listing supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes and reports Switch 2 compatibility with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. The cited entry does not establish a physical cartridge, so do not assume one is available because another game in the genre has a boxed edition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Axiom Verge: use it as the exploration benchmark
Axiom Verge belongs in this buying decision as a contrast, not as a confirmed roguelike recommendation. Nintendo’s official description emphasizes a large labyrinthine world, weapons, items, abilities, and puzzles that can be solved by using glitches. Those details represent the conventional exploration-led side of the comparison: learn the space, gain tools, and use them to solve obstacles.
When this contrast is useful
Choose this kind of structure if your priority is a persistent sense of place and ability-based route discovery rather than repeated randomized attempts. The cited source does not establish a roguelike or roguelite reset loop, so a buyer seeking run variation should not treat the game as equivalent to Dead Cells or Rogue Legacy 2.
Switch listing facts
The official listing gives an October 5, 2017 release date and a 321 MB file size. It supports single-system play and TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, and reports compatibility with Switch 2. The cited material does not establish a physical SKU or current price.
Choose by the experience you actually want
Choose the clearest hybrid label
Start with Dead Cells if the most important requirement is that a recognized description explicitly combines roguelite and Metroidvania elements. Confirm the exact edition and region before buying, especially if you want physical media.
Choose randomized runs with long-term unlocks
Choose Rogue Legacy 2 if you want randomly generated regions and adventures but do not want death to erase all progress. Its documented mix of persistent upgrades, permanent heirlooms, variable heirs, and House Rules is the most detailed match for that preference.
Choose exploration over run repetition
Use Axiom Verge as the better fit when the appeal is a labyrinthine world, abilities, and puzzles rather than a confirmed roguelike loop. It is a comparison point for Metroidvania exploration, not evidence of a randomized-run system.

- Read the platform label: confirm Nintendo Switch rather than assuming a listing for another platform transfers automatically.
- Check digital versus physical: the documented Dead Cells page lists both; the cited Rogue Legacy 2 entry is digital; physical availability for Axiom Verge is not established here.
- Confirm the region: Dead Cells’ physical release dates differ for Asia, Europe, and America.
- Check Switch 2 wording: Rogue Legacy 2 and Axiom Verge are reported as compatible, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch for Rogue Legacy 2.
- Verify current price and stock: no current price, inventory status, or retailer offer is established by the cited information.
- Check file size and play mode where relevant: Axiom Verge is listed at 321 MB and supports single-system play; Rogue Legacy 2 lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes.
- Do not infer missing features: an absent statement about physical media, difficulty controls, or persistence is not proof that the feature exists or does not exist.
Bottom line for a Switch buyer
Judge the purchase by the reset-and-exploration loop, not the genre badge. Dead Cells is the clearest documented roguelite–Metroidvania hybrid and the only game here with an officially documented Switch physical edition. Rogue Legacy 2 is the clearest choice for randomized adventures supported by persistent upgrades, permanent ability unlocks, and adjustable House Rules; its cited Switch offer is digital. Axiom Verge is the exploration-led alternative, with a labyrinthine world and ability-based puzzles but no cited evidence that it is a roguelike. Verify the live regional listing, edition, price, stock, and compatibility immediately before checkout.
