Short answer: Hatch Restore 3 combines a bedside light, sleep sounds, customizable wind-down routines, and a sunrise alarm. You can use its core functions without continuing Hatch+ membership, and you can keep your phone away during the nightly routine. However, initial setup is not phone-free: you need the Hatch Sleep app, a Bluetooth-enabled phone or other device, secure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, and continuous power. Hatch+ expands the sound, light, alarm, and unwind libraries and adds more customization, but Hatch says basic Restore 3 features remain after cancellation.

What does Hatch Restore 3 do?

Restore 3 is a powered bedside sleep-routine device. It combines colored and soothing light, audio for sleep or winding down, routines that move through configured steps, and a sunrise alarm intended to provide a gradual wake-up rather than a sudden alarm sound. The device is operated through the Hatch Sleep app during setup and whenever you want to change settings, while physical controls let you run a routine and manage an alarm without handling your phone every night.

Light, sound, routines, and sunrise alarms

The basic concept is a sequence you configure for bedtime and waking. A routine can combine light and sound settings, then move through its steps on a schedule. Restore 3 also supports sleep sounds, reminders, and a limited selection of unwind routines on the included side of the product. The exact catalog can change, so the current in-app library is the reliable place to see which sounds, lights, alarms, and unwind items are available when you buy.

Hatch describes some of its content as “science-backed,” but that marketing description is not an independent clinical outcome study. Restore 3 should be treated as a consumer sleep-routine tool, not as a clinically proven treatment for insomnia or another medical condition.

Physical controls for a phone-free night

Restore 3 has onboard controls for the actions you are most likely to need after setup. Hatch’s controls guide covers starting and stopping an unwind routine, moving between routine steps, changing volume, pausing audio, snoozing or turning off an alarm, toggling alarms, and tapping to reveal the time when the clock display is hidden. You can configure up to three routines and switch among them.

Those controls are why “phone-free” is an accurate description of nightly operation but a misleading description of the whole ownership experience. You do not have to keep your phone beside the bed to start a routine or silence an alarm, yet the app remains the normal way to make later changes.

Do I need a Hatch+ subscription for the Hatch Restore 3?

No, not for the core device functions. Hatch separates Restore 3 features that are included with the hardware from the larger Hatch+ content and customization library.

Included with Restore 3 Added with Hatch+
Core sleep sounds Additional sounds
Core light settings Additional light options
Sunrise alarms Additional alarm content
Reminders Additional unwind content
A limited set of unwind routines More routine customization

The table describes the distinction Hatch makes in its support material, not a permanent item-by-item catalog. Libraries and labels can be revised, and the pages reviewed do not establish a single precise count that will remain current. Open the live library in the app before deciding whether the included selection meets your needs.

What happens when the trial ends?

Hatch says setup includes a free Hatch+ trial. It also says you can cancel and retain the basic Restore 3 features. The reviewed support information does not establish a current paid price or guarantee that every new, used, or previously activated unit receives the same trial. Check the trial’s renewal date and cancellation terms in the store or channel where you started it; do not assume that a second-hand device has the same eligibility as a newly activated one.

If you only want a bedside light, sounds, routines, and sunrise alarms, you can plan to use the included tier and treat Hatch+ as optional. If a particular sound, light, alarm, or unwind routine is the reason you are buying, verify that item in the current app library before paying for the device or allowing the trial to renew.

Can I use Hatch Restore 3 without a subscription?

Yes. Hatch states that basic features remain after Hatch+ cancellation. You will still have the included sounds, lights, sunrise alarms, reminders, and limited unwind content described above. What you lose is access to the extra Hatch+ library and the expanded customization associated with membership.

Subscription-free ownership does not mean setup-free ownership. You still need to complete the app and Wi‑Fi setup, and you may still use the app later when you want to change a routine or other configuration. The subscription question and the connectivity question are separate: declining Hatch+ does not remove the technical requirements for connecting Restore 3.

Does Hatch Restore 3 need Wi‑Fi?

Yes, for initial setup and app connection. Hatch’s technical requirements specify secure 2.4 GHz wireless internet and a Bluetooth-enabled device. During setup, the Hatch Sleep app uses your phone’s Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi connection to connect Restore 3 to your network. Keep the device plugged in while this process is completed.

After setup, you can run a configured nightly routine with the device’s physical controls, so your phone does not need to stay in the bedroom. That phone-free operation should not be read as a promise that every feature works without a network forever. The app remains useful for changing setup, and Hatch’s support process assumes a network connection when troubleshooting or updating the configuration.

What kind of Wi‑Fi is required?

Hatch specifies a secure 2.4 GHz network. A phone that is connected only to a 5 GHz network will not satisfy that requirement for setup. If your router combines both bands under one network name, use its settings or a temporary 2.4 GHz network name so the phone and Restore 3 can complete pairing on the required band.

Can I use Hatch Restore 3 without my phone?

Not for initial setup, but generally yes for the nightly routine. Hatch Support explains: “We’ve designed Restore 3 so you can put your phone down during your nightly routine, however you will need your phone in combination with the Hatch Sleep app to get your Restore 3 connected to your Wi-Fi and for initial set up.” In practical terms, plan on using a compatible phone during installation and whenever you want to edit settings. Once a routine and alarm are configured, use the physical controls to start, pause, stop, snooze, or adjust the functions covered by the controls guide.

Setup checklist

  • A phone or other Bluetooth-enabled device
  • The current Hatch Sleep app
  • Access to a secure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network
  • A nearby power outlet where Restore 3 can remain plugged in
  • Your Wi‑Fi credentials

How to set up Restore 3

  1. Choose the permanent location. Put Restore 3 beside the bed with access to a power outlet. Hatch instructs users to keep it plugged in at all times, so avoid a location where the cable will be routinely disconnected.
  2. Prepare the network. Confirm that your router broadcasts a secure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network and that you know its password. If your router uses one name for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, be ready to select or temporarily create the 2.4 GHz option.
  3. Install the app. Download the Hatch Sleep app on a Bluetooth-enabled phone and sign in or create the account the app requests.
  4. Power Restore 3. Connect it to power and leave it connected throughout setup. Do not treat unplugging it as a normal way to restart the installation.
  5. Follow the in-app setup path. In the Hatch Sleep app, choose the option to add or set up Restore 3, then follow the prompts to pair over Bluetooth and provide the 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi credentials.
  6. Configure a routine and alarm. Select the light, sound, timing, and sunrise-alarm behavior you want. You can set up to three routines for different nights or schedules.
  7. Test the physical controls. Start a routine, adjust volume, pause audio, and test alarm snooze or shutoff before relying on the device overnight.
  8. Decide on Hatch+ deliberately. If the app presents a free trial, note its renewal date and review the cancellation terms for the signup channel. You can keep the included Restore 3 features if you cancel.

Does Restore 3 work with 5 GHz Wi‑Fi?

Hatch’s stated requirement is 2.4 GHz wireless internet, so you should not buy Restore 3 expecting a 5 GHz-only setup to work. The issue is the Wi‑Fi band, not whether your internet service is fast enough. Many modern routers provide both bands, but you may need to expose the 2.4 GHz network separately during setup.

If your home network cannot provide 2.4 GHz, the device does not meet Hatch’s published setup requirement. A phone hotspot or a travel router broadcasting 2.4 GHz may help some users, according to Hatch’s troubleshooting guidance, but these are workarounds rather than guaranteed compatibility. Hotel, campus, office, and other captive-portal networks can impose additional login or isolation rules that prevent reliable smart-device setup.

Wi‑Fi and connection troubleshooting

When setup fails, work through the likely causes in this order rather than repeatedly retrying the same pairing screen.

1. Confirm the band

Check the router’s wireless settings and verify that 2.4 GHz is enabled. If the router automatically steers devices between bands, temporarily create a distinct 2.4 GHz network name and connect the phone to it before retrying.

2. Recheck credentials

Enter the Wi‑Fi name and password exactly as configured. A changed password, hidden network name, or special character entered incorrectly can look like a device fault.

3. Update the surrounding software

Hatch advises checking that the router, phone operating system, and Hatch app are current. Restart the app after updating, then repeat the setup flow while Restore 3 remains powered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check phone permissions and Bluetooth

Because setup uses a Bluetooth-enabled device, confirm that Bluetooth is on and that the Hatch app has the phone permissions it requests for nearby-device and network setup. Keep the phone close to Restore 3 during pairing.

5. Try a controlled alternative network

If your home router is the obstacle, Hatch mentions a phone hotspot or a travel router broadcasting 2.4 GHz as possible approaches reported by some users. Treat either option as a troubleshooting experiment, not a guarantee. A hotspot may have data limits, and a travel router still has to connect successfully to the upstream network.

6. Return to the normal network

Once setup succeeds, reconnect the phone to your usual network and test a routine. If later changes fail, check the 2.4 GHz availability and app version again before assuming that the device has lost its configuration.

How phone-free nightly control works

Restore 3’s physical controls are designed around the actions that matter after lights-out. You can start or stop an unwind routine, move between its steps, change volume, pause audio, snooze or turn off an alarm, toggle alarms, and reveal the time with a tap when the display is hidden. Because up to three routines can be stored, you can keep different schedules available without rebuilding them each night.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app remains the better tool for editing the content and timing of those routines. Think of the product as “phone-free during operation” rather than “phone-independent.” That distinction matters if you are buying it specifically to remove screens from the bedroom: you can leave the phone outside once the routine is configured, but you still need a phone for installation and future changes.

Who is Restore 3 a good fit for?

  • A powered bedside setup: You have an outlet beside the bed and want one device for light, audio, routines, and a sunrise alarm.
  • Screen-free nightly operation: You are comfortable using an app for setup but want physical controls after the routine starts.
  • Flexible subscription use: You are satisfied with a core library or willing to evaluate Hatch+ during its trial without assuming a permanent membership.
  • Compatible home networking: You can provide secure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi and use a Bluetooth-enabled phone for installation.

When to reconsider before buying

  • No 2.4 GHz access: A 5 GHz-only network does not match Hatch’s published requirement.
  • No compatible phone: Initial setup cannot be completed solely from the device’s physical buttons.
  • Frequent relocation: The manufacturer says to keep Restore 3 plugged in, which is inconvenient for a travel or room-to-room product.
  • Subscription-dependent expectations: A specific sound, light, or routine may be part of Hatch+ rather than the included library; verify it in the live app catalog.
  • Medical-treatment expectations: Restore 3 is not supported here by an independent published statistic showing that it treats a sleep disorder or improves sleep outcomes.

Questions to settle before checkout

  1. Can you identify a secure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network at the installation location?
  2. Do you have a Bluetooth-enabled phone available for the Hatch Sleep app setup?
  3. Is there a permanent power outlet beside the bed?
  4. Are the included sounds, lights, reminders, sunrise alarms, and limited unwind routines enough for you?
  5. If you start the Hatch+ trial, have you recorded the renewal date and the cancellation route?
  6. Will physical controls meet your nightly needs, with app access reserved for future changes?

If the answers are yes, Restore 3’s main trade-off is straightforward: it offers a broad, app-configured bedside routine while keeping the phone out of the nightly interaction. If any answer is no, solve that setup or content issue first; the subscription itself is optional, but the 2.4 GHz network, Bluetooth-enabled phone, and continuous power are part of the ownership requirements.
