Before buying a digital PS5 game, know three rules: the purchase belongs to the PlayStation account that paid for it; Sony’s U.S. refund policy generally requires that a game or DLC has not been downloaded or streamed and that the request is made within 14 days; and PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play can let other users on one enabled PS5 play the purchaser’s downloaded games, including offline.
Those rules describe access, not transferable ownership. A shared user does not receive a separate license, and the official support pages do not promise that a digital purchase can be resold, moved to another account, or kept available under every future account-closure or suspension scenario.
What a digital PS5 purchase actually gives you
A PlayStation Store purchase is associated with the account that completed the transaction. The game is downloaded to a PS5, but the account license remains the key link between the purchase and access. Console Sharing and Offline Play changes who can use that purchase on one console; it does not create a second purchase or transfer ownership to another account.

This distinction matters when several people use one household console. A family member can play a qualifying downloaded game from their own local user profile on the enabled PS5, yet the purchasing account still controls the license. The arrangement should not be treated as a resale mechanism, a way to split a purchase permanently between accounts, or a guarantee that access survives every account-status change.

What the official rules do not establish
- They do not provide a general way to sell or transfer a digital game to another PlayStation account.
- They do not settle every result of account closure, suspension, payment reversal, or a future policy change.
- They do not establish every simultaneous-play or remote-sharing scenario between multiple PS5 consoles.
For those edge cases, check the current PlayStation Support terms for the Store region and account situation involved.
Can you get a refund for a digital PS5 game?
Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Store support page places full games, downloadable content and season passes in its Games and DLC refund category. Unless the content is faulty, the checklist requires both of these conditions:
- The content has not been downloaded or streamed.
- The refund request is made within 14 days of purchase.
“Downloaded or streamed” is broader than “started playing.” Starting a download, preload or stream can remove the ordinary change-of-mind route even if you never launch the game. If you are uncertain about a purchase, do not start the download while you decide. Use the regional PlayStation Support page to submit or confirm the request, because the rules described here are specifically from the United States page.

Sony identifies faulty content as an exception to the normal checklist. That does not mean every performance problem automatically qualifies or that a refund is guaranteed. Describe the fault to PlayStation Support and follow the instructions for your Store region. Keep the purchase date, transaction details and any error information available.

Why region and local law matter
The 14-day and download conditions above are a U.S. policy summary, not a worldwide promise. Sony’s Canadian cancellation information, for example, notes that rights under local law may provide additional protection. Other Store regions can have different procedures or mandatory consumer rights. Before relying on a deadline, open the support policy that applies to the country or region on your PlayStation account, and consider any rights granted by local law.
Pre-order refunds depend on when you ordered
Sony’s U.S. policy uses two pre-order windows. In both cases, the main game must not have downloaded or preloaded.

Pre-order bonuses and automatic downloads
A pre-order can include immediately available extras, such as a bonus item. Sony says that bonus stops working when the order is canceled, even if the main game has not begun downloading. Automatic-download settings therefore deserve attention: a console may begin a preload without you deliberately opening the game page. If preserving a possible cancellation is important, review the PS5’s auto-download behavior and avoid starting the main download or preload.
A practical pre-order check
- Record the purchase date and scheduled release date.
- Work out whether the order was placed more than 14 days before release or 14 days or less before release.
- Check whether the main game has downloaded or preloaded.
- Check whether any bonus content is already available and understand that canceling can disable it.
- Use the U.S. or other applicable regional PlayStation Support policy before the relevant deadline.
How PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play works
On PS5, the feature is called Console Sharing and Offline Play. Sony allows it on one PS5 per account at a time. When it is enabled, anyone using that PS5 can play games and use media that the account holder purchased and downloaded, even when the console is offline.

The feature is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in. To change the enabled console:
- Sign in with the account that bought the game.
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Open Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Enable on the PS5 you want to authorize, or Disable on the previous PS5 first if it is still available.
After the setting is enabled and the game is downloaded, another user on that PS5 can select the game from their own profile. The purchaser does not need to be online for that enabled console to launch the downloaded title. The one-PS5 limit applies to Console Sharing and Offline Play; Sony says it does not change the account’s other console-activation limits.
What sharing does not do
- It does not copy the purchase into the other user’s account.
- It does not let you enable the feature on an unlimited number of PS5 consoles.
- It does not turn a digital license into a transferable or resalable copy.
- It does not answer every question about playing the same game at the same time on separate consoles.
Use the feature for a console you control and for users whose access you understand. Keep the purchasing account secured with a strong password and two-step verification; anyone who can sign in as that account can manage purchases and account settings.
What if you no longer have the enabled PS5?
If the account holder cannot access the PS5 currently enabled for sharing, Sony provides a remote recovery route through Account Management: remotely deactivate all devices. Sony states that this all-device action is available only once every six months.

Remote deactivation is not a per-console remote switch and is not a button you can use repeatedly whenever you change households. Because it affects all activated devices, plan for the other consoles that may need to be signed in and reactivated afterward. If the six-month limit has been reached, contact PlayStation Support rather than assuming another remote reset is available.
Does sharing a game share PlayStation Plus?
No. A game purchase and a PlayStation Plus membership are separate account benefits. PlayStation Plus is tied to the subscribing account. Sony permits selected Plus benefits to be shared on a primary PS4 and on one PS5 where Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, but that does not make every Plus feature available to every user.
Most PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, although some games do not. Check the individual game’s PlayStation Store listing for its online requirement. Buying a game does not itself provide a Plus membership, and enabling Console Sharing does not convert another user into the subscriber.

- Can another user launch the downloaded game on the enabled PS5? Console Sharing and Offline Play may allow this.
- Can that user use online multiplayer? The game may require Plus, and the applicable shareable benefit depends on Sony’s current rules and the console settings.
- Does that user own the game? No. The purchase remains associated with the purchasing account.
PS5 and PS4 use different names and settings
If your household still uses both generations, do not look for the PS5 label on a PS4. Sony describes the PS4 equivalent as activating a primary PS4 console. Each player can have one primary PS4 for their account. The settings path is Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.

The supplied PS4 guidance does not provide a complete feature-by-feature comparison with PS5. Use the correct generation’s current support instructions rather than assuming that every limit or menu behaves identically.
Choose the setup that matches your use case
One person using several consoles
Your purchase stays with your account. You can sign in on another PS5 and access your library subject to Sony’s licensing and console settings, but Console Sharing and Offline Play can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time. If offline access for other household users is the priority, designate the PS5 that needs that capability.
Several people using one household PS5
Sign in with the purchasing account, enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on that PS5, and download the game. Other users can then play the downloaded title from their profiles, including while the console is offline. They do not receive an independent license, and online features may still depend on Plus.
Online multiplayer is the priority
First check the game’s Store listing to see whether online multiplayer requires Plus. Then check which Plus benefits Sony currently allows to be shared on the enabled PS5. Do not assume that sharing a game automatically shares the subscription or every subscription feature.
You are replacing or giving away a PS5
Before losing access to the old console, disable Console Sharing and Offline Play there and enable it on the replacement through the settings path above. If the old console is unavailable, Account Management’s remote all-device deactivation may help, but Sony limits that action to once every six months.
Common mistakes that can cost you a refund or access
- Starting the download “just to test it.” Sony’s U.S. checklist refers to downloaded or streamed content, not merely to games you have launched.
- Ignoring preload settings on a pre-order. A background preload can affect eligibility even if you never opened the game.
- Assuming a bonus is harmless. Canceling a pre-order can disable immediately available bonus content.
- Enabling sharing on the wrong PS5. Only one PS5 can be enabled for the account at a time.
- Treating sharing as ownership. The other user can access the game on the enabled console but does not receive a separate account license.
- Using remote deactivation as a routine switch. Sony says the all-device action is limited to once every six months.
- Assuming Plus is included. A Store purchase and a Plus subscription are separate, and online requirements vary by game.
- Applying U.S. deadlines everywhere. Store-region rules and local law can add or change consumer rights.
A pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm that you are buying on the PlayStation account that should retain the purchase.
- Check the game’s edition, release date and online-multiplayer requirement on its Store listing.
- If it is a pre-order, note whether you are more than 14 days before release or within 14 days of release.
- If you may change your mind, avoid downloading, streaming or preloading the content.
- Review auto-download settings and understand what happens to any immediately available pre-order bonus if you cancel.
- Decide which single PS5 should have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled.
- Verify whether the household’s online play needs a Plus subscription and which benefits can be shared.
- Save the relevant regional PlayStation Support page and check it again if Sony changes the policy.
Bottom line for a digital PS5 purchase
A digital PS5 game is tied to the purchasing PlayStation account. On one PS5, Console Sharing and Offline Play can let other users play the account’s downloaded games offline, but that access is not a transfer of ownership. For a U.S. change-of-mind refund, Sony generally requires an undownloaded and unstreamed game or DLC and a request within 14 days; pre-orders have separate timing rules, and faulty content is treated as an exception. Keep the download paused while deciding, choose the sharing console deliberately, and verify the policy for your own Store region and legal jurisdiction.
