Both an Xbox and a Windows PC can play the major modern Halo releases, but there is no single “Halo system.” Start by choosing the specific game—most commonly Halo Infinite or Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC)—then match that game’s platform support, PC requirements, online-access rules, resolution target and display needs. Halo Infinite multiplayer is free on Xbox and PC without an active Game Pass subscription; its Campaign is a separate purchase or may be included with some Game Pass memberships. MCC has different console and PC requirements, and online access depends on where you play it.
Choose the Halo game before choosing hardware
“Halo” describes a franchise, not one software requirement. Halo Infinite and MCC support overlapping platforms, but they are separate products with different storage, hardware and subscription considerations. A console or PC that is suitable for one title may not offer the same experience in another mode or game.
- Halo Infinite: available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11. Its multiplayer is free-to-play; Campaign is separate.
- Halo: The Master Chief Collection: available on Xbox consoles and Windows PC through Steam, the Microsoft Store or the Xbox PC app. Its online-access requirements differ between console and PC storefronts.
If you want the original-era campaigns and multiplayer in one package, investigate MCC. If you want the current live multiplayer and Campaign, check Halo Infinite. Confirm the exact edition and included content in the storefront before buying, because listings and subscription catalogs can change.
Which platforms officially support Halo?
| Route | Halo Infinite | Halo: The Master Chief Collection | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Supported | Supported | Game edition, storage and online-membership requirements |
| Xbox Series S | Supported | Supported | 1080p target for the cited MCC enhancement modes; storage capacity and display refresh rate |
| Xbox Series X | Supported | Supported | 4K-capable display and mode-specific 60 or 120Hz targets |
| Windows PC | Supported on Windows 10/11 when the PC meets the official requirements | Supported through Steam, Microsoft Store and Xbox PC app, with separate game requirements | CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, operating system, SSD and chosen storefront |
These platform listings establish compatibility, not identical performance. Frame rate, resolution and available graphics options can vary by game, map, mode, hardware and display.

Xbox: the simpler route to a known Halo setup
Xbox Series S
Series S supports both Halo Infinite and MCC. Halo Support’s MCC enhancement information lists 1080p resolution at 60 or 120Hz in the specified modes. That makes Series S a sensible fit for a 1080p television or monitor, provided the screen supports the refresh rate you want. The cited figures apply to the modes described on the enhancement page; they are not a guarantee for every Halo title, map or split-screen configuration.
Before buying, check the console’s available storage against the games you intend to install. No current retail price or a current storage value for any particular listing was published, so compare the exact model and bundle shown by the seller rather than relying on an old price guide.
Xbox Series X
Series X supports both named games and is the Xbox choice for a 4K display. Xbox describes Halo Infinite as offering up to 120 frames per second and 4K on Series X, but only across supported maps and modes. MCC’s cited enhancement page lists 4K at 60 or 120Hz in its specified single-player and two-player split-screen modes.

“Up to” is important: it does not mean every mode continuously renders at 4K and 120 frames per second. You need a compatible television or monitor, the correct HDMI and display settings, and a game mode that supports the advertised target. A 4K screen that is limited to 60Hz cannot show a 120Hz output, while a 120Hz screen does not make unsupported game modes run at 120 frames per second.
Xbox One
Xbox lists Halo Infinite for Xbox One as well as Series X|S. That is useful if you already own an Xbox One and want to avoid an immediate hardware purchase. It does not make Xbox One equivalent to the newer consoles: the Series-specific resolution and refresh-rate enhancements do not automatically apply to Xbox One, and the available performance options can differ by title and mode.

PC: verify the exact requirements, not just the brand of the computer
A “gaming PC” label is not enough. Compare the machine’s processor, graphics card, dedicated video memory, system memory, operating-system version and storage type with the official requirements for the game you will actually install. Halo Support’s Halo Infinite requirements page, updated December 12, 2024, gives two useful reference tiers.
| Halo Infinite tier | Processor | Graphics card | VRAM | System RAM | Storage and OS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or Intel Core i5-4440 | AMD Radeon RX 570 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti | 4GB or more | 8GB or more | 50GB or more on an SSD; Windows 10 RS5 x64 |
| High (Recommended) | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-9700K | AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 | 8GB or more | 16GB or more | 50GB or more on an SSD; Windows 10 RS5 x64 |
The minimum row is a compatibility floor, not a promise of a particular frame rate, image-quality preset or resolution. The High (Recommended) row is likewise not a universal benchmark. Driver versions, game updates, cooling, laptop power limits, background applications and the selected graphics settings all affect results. Halo Support’s driver and software guidance can change, so check the current page before purchasing components.

Windows+R, enterdxdiag, and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Record the processor and installed memory shown on the System tab. - Open the Display or Render tabs and record the graphics-card model and dedicated display memory. On a desktop, verify the installed card rather than relying on the processor’s integrated-graphics name.
- In File Explorer, right-click the destination drive and check free space. Reserve more than the listed 50GB so Windows, updates and temporary files are not competing for the last few gigabytes.
- Open Settings > System > About and Windows Update to confirm the edition, architecture and current updates. Halo Infinite’s cited requirement specifies Windows 10 RS5 x64; a supported current Windows installation is safer than an unpatched system.
- Compare every component with the game’s current official requirements. For MCC, check the requirements for the particular MCC PC release and storefront; do not substitute Halo Infinite’s table.
Halo Infinite multiplayer, Campaign and Game Pass
Halo Infinite’s two major components have different purchase rules. Halo Support states: “Halo Infinite multiplayer is free-to-play and available on PC and Xbox consoles.” You can play that multiplayer on supported Xbox and PC hardware without an active Game Pass subscription for online multiplayer.
- Multiplayer: free-to-play on Xbox and PC. An active Game Pass subscription is not required for online multiplayer.
- Campaign: a separate paid listing, or potentially included with some Game Pass memberships. Confirm the current catalog and terms before budgeting.
Do not assume that buying or installing free multiplayer includes Campaign. Check the storefront’s product name and the installed content. Membership catalogs can change, and a subscription may provide access only while the title remains included and the membership is active.
MCC online access depends on console versus PC
MCC is sold or accessed through several storefronts, and its online rules are not identical. The official requirements information says Xbox-console online play requires an Xbox network account and an active Game Pass subscription. PC requirements differ; Steam play does not require an active Xbox subscription, although you may still need the accounts and sign-ins required by the game and storefront.

- Play with friends and family near and farsitting together on the sofa or around the world on Xbox Live, the fastest, most reliable gaming network

For a console purchase, budget for the applicable online membership if you intend to use MCC multiplayer. For a PC purchase, select the storefront first, then read that storefront’s current requirements and account instructions. This distinction is separate from Halo Infinite’s free-to-play multiplayer rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsResolution and frame rate: what the advertised numbers really mean
| Game and platform | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Halo Infinite on Xbox Series X and compatible PC | Up to 120 FPS and 4K | Xbox says this applies only across supported maps and modes and requires a compatible TV or monitor |
| MCC on Xbox Series X | 4K at 60 or 120Hz | Halo Support lists this for the specified enhancement modes, including described single-player and two-player split-screen modes |
| MCC on Xbox Series S | 1080p at 60 or 120Hz | Halo Support lists this for the specified enhancement modes; it is not a blanket claim for every MCC mode |
Refresh rate and frame rate are related but not interchangeable. A 120Hz display can refresh 120 times per second, while the game must actually render enough frames to use that capability. Resolution also depends on the selected mode. Read the game’s video options and the display’s input specifications together, especially when using split-screen or older campaign content.
Console or PC: a practical decision framework
Choose Xbox when
- You want a fixed hardware target without comparing CPU, GPU, VRAM and driver combinations.
- You already own a compatible Xbox One and mainly want to start playing without building or upgrading a PC.
- You want the Series X or Series S enhancement targets described by Halo Support and have a display suited to the chosen resolution and refresh rate.
- You plan to play MCC online on console and are prepared to maintain the required active Game Pass subscription.
Choose Windows PC when
- You already have a machine that meets the exact requirements for the Halo title you want.
- You want to select graphics settings, resolution, input devices and upgrade parts over time.
- You intend to use MCC through Steam, where the cited requirements page says an active Xbox subscription is not required for Steam play.
- Your existing monitor, peripherals and storage make the PC route more practical than buying a separate console setup.
Do not decide on platform from a general preference for “console” or “PC” alone. Write down the game, desired resolution, target refresh rate, online mode and available display first. Then compare the complete setup, including storage and any required membership.
Buying and setup checklist
Before purchasing
- Name the specific game: Halo Infinite multiplayer, Halo Infinite Campaign, MCC, or more than one.
- Confirm that the edition contains the mode you want and note whether Campaign is sold separately or included through a current membership catalog.
- For Xbox, choose Xbox One, Series S or Series X according to the display and performance target you actually need.
- For PC, compare every listed requirement, not only the graphics-card model. Check VRAM, RAM, Windows architecture, SSD space and the processor.
- Check the display: resolution, refresh rate, HDMI capability and whether it supports the console or PC output you intend to use.
- Verify current storefront, membership, driver and system requirements immediately before payment. Prices, catalogs, updates and technical guidance can change.
Installing on Xbox
- Sign in to the Xbox profile that will own or access the game.
- Open the Microsoft Store or your library and search for the exact Halo title and edition.
- For Halo Infinite, select free multiplayer or the separate Campaign listing as appropriate. For MCC, confirm the included collection and any required add-ons.
- Check available storage before starting the download, particularly on a console with limited internal capacity.
- After installation, open the game’s video settings and select an available resolution or performance option that matches your display. Test the mode you intend to play rather than assuming the highest advertised number applies everywhere.
Installing on PC
- Choose Steam, the Microsoft Store or the Xbox PC app for MCC, or the supported storefront for Halo Infinite.
- Update Windows and install the current graphics driver recommended by the GPU manufacturer and the game’s official support guidance.
- Install to an SSD with at least the stated free capacity plus room for updates and normal system operation.
- Launch the game, allow shader or content preparation to finish, and set a conservative resolution and quality preset first.
- Increase quality or frame-rate targets gradually while watching for stutter, overheating or memory warnings. These observations are specific to your PC; they are not guarantees for other systems.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying for the franchise instead of the game
A system can support one Halo title while your preferred edition has different requirements or content. Put the exact game name on your buying checklist and verify it in the store listing.
Treating minimum specifications as a performance promise
The Halo Infinite minimum PC tier identifies hardware needed to run the game, but it does not specify a guaranteed frame rate or visual preset. If a smooth high-refresh experience matters, use the recommended tier as a starting point and leave room for settings, drivers and future updates.

Assuming every Series console delivers the same image
Series S and Series X have different cited MCC enhancement targets. Series S is listed at 1080p in the specified modes; Series X is listed at 4K. Select the console that matches your display rather than paying for a resolution your television cannot show.
Forgetting the online-access distinction
Halo Infinite multiplayer does not require an active Game Pass subscription for online multiplayer. MCC online play on Xbox consoles does require an active Game Pass subscription according to the official requirements page, while Steam play has different rules. Check the platform-specific requirement before assuming the same membership policy applies.
Reading “up to 120 FPS” as a universal setting
Xbox limits that Halo Infinite statement to supported maps and modes on Series X and compatible PCs, with a compatible TV or monitor required. Confirm the selected game mode and display before buying a 120Hz screen for that purpose.
Bottom-line buying advice
For the least configuration work, an Xbox is the straightforward path: Xbox One supports both named games, while Series S and Series X add the cited MCC enhancement targets. Choose Series S for a 1080p-oriented setup and Series X when 4K and supported high-refresh modes justify the larger hardware target.
